Re:WTF Ubuntu? on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:23AM (#50339186)
We migrated to Ubuntu from CentOS as well. It was simply because Rocky wasn’t established enough at the time and we haven’t had a reason yet to again look elsewhere. Tho we haven’t also phased out most VMs for containers of some sort.
And now my opinion has soured on Proton and I am a paying client.
Re:Google ending ChromeOS support two years early on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @02:16PM (#49897957)
I live in probably one of the poorest districts in my state. Google basically gives these things away for free for the management contract on top of the gsuite contracts the districts get.
I actually learned about this on Notgabbyb‘s YouTube channel. It’s insane what we learn about and then somehow don’t riot on.
Tap to pay on a controller seems a bit much but at the same time using that over manually entering my CC everytime now a win, as I don’t save my payment method.
Re:"80% of AI projects fail" traces to a footnote one line long on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:54PM (#49793259)
It’s one of those I believe it without reading it only because it’s so easy to start one now. You get that quick dopamine fix get to the basic step of output, then get distracted and move onto something else.
Re:Apple Watch Series 12 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:28PM (#49636584)
Wife is a nurse. They trialed this out where she works and it was seriously a horrible experience. She ended up spending more time fixing the output then just taking her short hand notes.
I’ll be honest it’s been over 10 years at this point. But we had to virtualize a dying Gateway 2000 that had Windows XP on it. As part of that we needed ISA to keep working. I found some USB ISA adapters and ordered them. It took a lot of messing around with Workstation, the host Windows 7 and drivers on the VM. I can’t remember all the details at this point :(
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @09:26AM (#49610060)
I get it’s a personal thing but yeah I’d still separate them. Tv != Movie.
Reminds me of setting up VMware Workstation with USB ISA cards to keep a line running. Ugh

Can I ask why you have TV shows in the same folder? I have a /video folder and under that /tv /movies /kidsmovies /kidstv. Just kinda curious.
Amazon is making it harder and harder to copy third party books onto the devices.
Re:Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @03:39PM (#49439509)
It’s been a broader trend of businesses downsizing the square footage when they can and when they can’t they start to mandate in office to justify the cost.
I was stating that MS Paint mis categorized a Print Screen screenshot as AI generated when pasted. Which pushed me to install PaintdotNet onto my laptop instead.
I had this trigger the other day incorrectly and went and installed Paint.net. I pasted in a screenshot I took and just wanted to resize it. I got a banner saying it was made with AI and would be updated to reflect that.
I understand where you might be coming from but: robocopy SOURCEPATH DESTPATH /mir /r:1 Is pretty easy to remember.
Re:Terminal Browser on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @06:24PM (#49265316)
Brings me back to the links/lynx days. Was always fun to see how messed up websites would get and that was simple html. Can’t imagine what goes into something like this.
10 years ago we had the same form with my kid’s daycare. They kinda got pissy about it tho as they didn’t want to have to scrub photos they posted to their Facebook and insinuated that your kid may not have as much fun if they have to “separate” them when it comes to photo time.

We told em tough don’t use our kid’s photo. So even if institutions implement this kinda thing almost non want to do it.

Yeah they folded it in 30 days. It was most definitely a hiring poach thing. We ended up with Windmill.dev
I was sad when Airtable bought Airplane.dev because that was a dirty move they pulled. Now let’s see if that’s how they get treated.

Same, I call it the perception of work.
Re:Writing by hand is good for your brain on Thursday July 23, 2026 @05:52PM (#49028536)
Not above commenter but I have. I have done OneNote, Miro, and several other canvas style apps. And for me it still just doesn’t click in my brain like writing it down.
Re:My USB Drive Has a Hidden Encrypted Vault on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @02:03PM (#48995875)
I miss TrueCrypts alt boot option. You enter a specific password it boots an alt OS so you could have an automatic alternative thing if under duress.
Re:Ghostel.el: Terminal emulator powered by libghostty on Sunday July 12, 2026 @11:43AM (#48882024)
Honestly not sure. I used ghosty and others for awhile but had continuous issues of it not passing a compatible term variable so a lot of tuis would break.
Re:TLS certificates for internal services done right on Sunday July 12, 2026 @11:38AM (#48881988)
Our issue was on multiple fronts. On windows it was GlobalProtect overriding dns requests. On Linux it was an issue with the OS fighting which nameservers to use. The fix was some experimental flag, tho I can’t remember it currently.
Re:TLS certificates for internal services done right on Thursday July 09, 2026 @03:48PM (#48851457)
And you still have issues sometimes around dns not able to figure out which interface to use. We had issues around that before.
That’s how we handle it with ours as well. He found a way around a certain control and we opened a bug report with the vendor and it was acknowledged and fixed. He then realized he locked out other kids with that and laughed and tries to find more worth reporting.
The things you can see in S1 Deep Observability is insane.
Re:Chatto is now Open Source on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @02:22PM (#48835449)
XMPP exists…
I have my work items on a separate network as well but my motivation is more not trusting some random item being pushed down from corp and having it scan my network or something.
