News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Good news, insurance companies are running for the exits on locations increasingly at risk. Homeowners are left screaming in fear of losing their homes after they realised insurance companies can just refuse to offer insurance after just 1 year. Even new homeowners desperate for a home are realising after they bought a new home in a floodplain, it turned out that developers/government tricked them into buying a massive liability where in a few years their million dollar asset becomes nearly worthless.

Bad news, neoliberal governments (even in Australia) are responding to this with socialising the risk via government insurance where rest of population who picked low-risk locations will still have to cover the high risk homes. Oh, and the government are still approving new homes in high-risk areas instead of increasing denisification of low-risk areas close to cities.

It's really painful to watch all this play out slowly.

The city don't care who was speeding through a speed camera when they fine the registered owner of the car, me, many months later. The picture evidence doesn't show who, just the car and licence plate. I have to investigate and prove it was someone else or pay the fine.

But it's apparently controversial to not just fine the company and then let the company investigate themselves.

Re:America Didn't Lose Its Rare Earth Industry. It Sold It on Thursday October 15, 2026 @04:04AM (#50100711)
Nationalisation may be unprecedented but a government could still do a similar devastating impact. See the NuCoal saga where the NSW government passed law that effectively cancelled the mining licence with no financial compensation. Even though the investors were not involved in the corruption scandal, they still didn't get reimbursed.
Most data centres in Australia (even the announced biggest one in the Southern Hemisphere) are close to a water processing plant in an industrial zone in Sydney. The same plant that supplies 85% of Sydney with drinking water. At least there's an upgrade.
meetup and other related apps have always been best for finding people with related interests.

If they don't have your interests, feel free to start a new group?

Maybe they might make a Black Mirror episode titled "The Day The Earth Stood Still"
That's assuming it's being rented out. It could be investor or developer sitting and waiting to sell or get a high rent tenant.
Re:Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes on Thursday April 07, 2022 @12:30PM (#30946758)
Are foreigners responsible for house price increases? Is it companies? Is it locals?

Who make up the buyers? Is there a breakdown? Ie foreign companies?

I would also like to know for Australia too.

Can those warrant canaries holders who follow police/court orders, be sued for false advertising?

Seems like a catch 22 that it's a lose-lose.

There needs to be a politician-journalist. Elected in second place who:

- Keeps the 1st place winner on their toes

- Reports to the losing voters

- Can do local news

- Can talk to people

Otherwise, all those hopeful candidates go back to focusing on their living and leaving those "losing" voters without any representation (seriously, how can there be no representation for the leftover votes and assuming they're not rich).

What word do you like and your definition of it?

Re:Flexible device could treat hearing loss without batteries on Thursday October 28, 2021 @06:33AM (#29024375)
Hearing aids are designed to increase sound where the person can't hear as well. Sounds are faint? Hearing aid is a good choice. No therapy needed. Downsides is it that it amplifies noise too, requires batteries, maintenance.

Cochlear implant are designed with electrical signals directly to nerves but needs therapy to understand. Its akin to a legless person learning to walk again with new metal legs. Has similar issues as above with noise, etc, but the nerves are stimulated directly which allows more accurate hearing but not 100%. A major downside is that you lose 100% natural hearing in that ear as the nerve stimulation wires go inside the cochlear, effectively blocking any sound from going in. So imagine you lose a foot, and they offer you a metal leg to walk again and that requires therapy. Its a tough choice for some: some natural hearing or accurate but stimulated hearing.

Then the ear implant. Or really a natural cochlear implant is akin to attaching a new human leg to a legless person. Still, there's therapy needed. However, the cochlear is around the skull. So it's not as simple as taking it out and reattaching it. A lot of research is being done with promising results.

Later, the bionic cochlear, a complete electrical replacement of cochlear where you hear as well as a dog, but that's a dream.

Re:UK national extradited to US for film/TV piracy on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @09:58PM (#28387891)
$500k for first offence and $1m for each next offence. At "tens", we're talking about $20-90m?

So, that means 21-91 DVDs.

In other news, if you wilfully share a copyrighted picture of an American citizen, that's a $500,000 fine and USA will extradite and jail you.

Re:UK national extradited to US for film/TV piracy on Wednesday September 01, 2021 @09:52PM (#28387847)
An Australian who had never been to USA was extradited and jailed despite not for profit too. On release, they got re jailed for being in USA illegally.

They only got deported back to Australia on the condition they never visit USA in future.

Currently, Australia's laws allow extradition if there's a jail term and we all know that sharing a picture is a jailable offence. Pirate Party Australia tried to push for non commercial+violent exemption but they never took off.

Easy way to kill distributors AND support creators with this small change:

Have copyright return to creators after a period of time, ie 20 years.

Billions of dollars will be spent fighting hints of this suggestion.

Re:Amazon in talks to buy MGM for $9bn on Tuesday May 18, 2021 @09:17AM (#27194160)
Want to boost IP creation by creators and make distributors beg? Have copyright return to creators after 20 or so years after they've been transferred via whatever contracts. Lots of renegotiations will mean lots of money for Picassos!

After all, everyone says the aim of stronger copyright laws is to protect "creators" (those same laws that implement near perpetual copyright terms, extraditions, $100k+ fine and 5+ years jail that can easily be applied such as sharing a picture to your parents)

Re:Dogs orient and move in synchrony with family members on Thursday March 18, 2021 @09:26PM (#26509377)
Even if you're 100% confident in off leash, one time they run across a road for treat / squirrel/ family / friend, its game over.

We believe in off leash too but dogs don't understand dangers like we do. I wish we could have a conversation with them.

Re:USA vs. Julian Assange Judgment on Monday January 04, 2021 @08:38PM (#25640955)
Australian governments would easily send their own citizens to foreign countries they never been to, for non violence offences like copyright infringement.

UK is way better than Australia in terms of bill of rights, etc.

They have the biggest brand. Brand shaming could lead to change not just them but ripple effect on other plastic using companies.
Coca-Cola privatises the profits from sales and socialises the plastic costs.

Even if people don't litter, there are landfills increasingly filling with plastic not being reused. The solution is quite mundane, a plastic bottle tax to pay for processing it. People litter and makes processing cost more? Increase tax.

They need to figure out ways to reduce this tax burden beyond lobbying. Ie campaign to avoid littering, glass bottles, etc. Currently they wage multi million campaigns against this simple tax all over the world, even in Australia where tax is 10c per bottle.

Have you considered something different for climate; mass production of climate change resistant (ie heat/acid) photosynthetic plankton and releasing to ocean?

How does it compare to trees?

1. Mobile phone

2. Google Live Transcribe app

This is how I handle Zoom meetings as partially deaf. Its fairly accurate and plus you can use a second mobile too. Downside is that it will pick up everyone, including your voice.

It could be obfuscation and/or developing a compiler to add "extra features". For security reasons.
Re:Cloudflare silently deleted my DNS records on Monday February 24, 2020 @06:03PM (#22409377)
In terms of games theory; if there's no cost to the company to ignore the customer, then that's an incentive to ignore the consumer's complaint. Especially if that company has a monopoly.

I can understand why GP suggested company pays $20.

Re:Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @04:40PM (#22186146)
Not grandparent but for me:

1) only certain notifications that are important have unique sound, vibrate, etc.

2) other semi important notifications flash. Light is not that bright to notice.

3) other notifications have numbers on app so there are some despite not seeing any notifications.

Result: I stopped checking every hour. It's actually been an improvement for me to stay away from phone.

I noticed that some apps abuse you for disabling notifications and Viber is biggest example. I don't care about holiday wishes or viber news but I need app to stay in touch with some people. Sadly, I only check at most once a fortnight because of this disabled notification nagging.
