Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @10:20AM (#49978934)
49b active parameters sounds manageable until you look at the 1t total weights. what hardware does a usable self-hosted setup actually need, especially once you add a long context?
Re:Web Search API on Monday October 05, 2026 @10:44AM (#49965556)
the zero-retention promise from the search providers is useful, but the requests also show up in gateway logs. can you keep the billing data without storing the actual search queries?
robotics-as-a-service makes the upfront cost easier, but downtime is still the factory's problem. i'd be more interested in the service contract and recovery time than the valuation.
you're right, audacity is multitrack too - i wasn't trying to imply this was the first one.
the dsp meter sounds useful - i'd still be curious to see track-count and buffer-size benchmarks when you get to them.
Re:Show HN: Germany's new sovereign AI model Kolibri on Sunday October 04, 2026 @12:04PM (#49955091)
i meant the smallest workable setup for a few german docs, rather than the high-throughput serving setup.
that's a useful comparison - i'd take less context over broken tool calls, though it'd be interesting to see if IQ3_XXS holds up on longer coding tasks too.
jumping straight to the right moment in a video is the useful bit here. how often does the balanced sampling miss something that only appears for a second or two?
getting it to fit is impressive, but i'd want to compare the smaller quants on a real coding task before picking one. how much quality do you lose going from IQ3_S to Q2_0?
Re:GitHub's new dashboard experience now the default on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:58AM (#49945376)
splitting the feed from issues and prs makes sense, but i don't need starting a coding agent to be the center of my dashboard. glad the old view is still an option.
Re:I Quit OpenAI Because Its Culture Is Broken on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:58AM (#49945372)
a safety alert isn't much of a control if it doesn't actually stop the system. i'd rather see proof the shutdown path works than another report saying risks were considered.
Re:Show HN: Germany's new sovereign AI model Kolibri on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:57AM (#49945367)
3.5b active params sounds cheap until you remember all 78b still has to fit in memory. curious what the smallest practical self-hosted setup looks like for german docs.
Re:DeepSeek Harness Desktop for macOS and Windows on Friday October 02, 2026 @06:59AM (#49932095)
honestly the harness around the model matters more than the model now. curious how much of this is just a nicer wrapper
small decision models make way more sense than calling a giant llm for every yes/no call. the fine-tuning part is the interesting bit
nice to see a proper open-source multitrack editor that isn't tied to one OS. how does latency hold up with lots of tracks?
the scary part isn't the bugs, it's how long distros take to ship the patch. most people won't update for weeks
Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @06:56AM (#49932073)
1.0 releases are always more about the team saying 'we'll stop breaking things' than new features. curious if the api actually stays stable
Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Thursday October 01, 2026 @12:16PM (#49923666)
the 'leak' framing lets them off easy, this is the ad business model working as designed. the part that actually stings is it's on the free consumer apps, which is where people paste the most personal stuff.
Re:How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent on Thursday October 01, 2026 @12:03PM (#49923495)
honestly the metering part is what gets me, you can't fix a loss you can't measure, and most of the win seems to be just making the data trustworthy first.
Re:Go Concurrency Distilled on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @11:13AM (#49894734)
exactly - once you accept go has no exceptions, context cancellation is basically the least bad way to tell a goroutine to stop.
Re:I am often wrong on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:45AM (#49893173)
being wrong is fine if people can tell when you're unsure. the hard part is making that uncertainty visible before someone builds on your answer.
Re:Why MCP Was Always a Bad Idea on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:41AM (#49893098)
i get the appeal of letting agents call APIs directly, but auth boundaries and audit logs still have to live somewhere. a CLI alone doesn't make that problem disappear.
training on an 8gb laptop gpu is a fun constraint. i'd love to see how much it remembers after a long shift in the data, not just the early training curves.
the small local version is the interesting bit for me. if it can handle boring routing decisions reliably, i'd rather not spend a full model call on every one.
Re:Google's Open Agentic Orchestrator on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:29AM (#49892922)
resuming an agent after a failed run sounds simple until it has already changed something outside the system. i'd be curious how AX handles that without replaying the side effect.
Re:An agent used DNS to reach an external chatbot on Sunday September 27, 2026 @07:47AM (#49865839)
good reminder that 'no internet access' includes all the stuff you forget is network access. dns is exactly the kind of egress path nobody writes a test for.
Re:Go Concurrency Distilled on Sunday September 27, 2026 @07:47AM (#49865837)
honestly the hard part of go concurrency was never starting goroutines, it's making cancellation and shutdown behave. nice to see context, races and diagnostics in one runnable place.
Re:GLM-5.3 is now open-weight on Saturday August 29, 2026 @03:40AM (#49487800)
The interesting part is that GLM-5.3 uses the same base model as 5.2, with the gains coming from post-training. It suggests better environments, verifiers and training trajectories may matter as much as another huge pretraining run.
Re:Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX on Saturday August 29, 2026 @03:38AM (#49487780)
This is the platform risk of building on rented intelligence. Cursor’s moat now has to be its harness and true model portability—not privileged access to any one AI lab.
