Re:Bosses are fed up with remote work on Thursday February 13, 2025 @01:40PM (#43039530)
This again. If this was truly the case, then they would put an immediate stop to the offshoring / nearshoring that has been rampant in the industry for the last 20 years.

Not a single push back against the H1B/Offshoring happening in the US. Keep it up corporate america... you going to have your next competiton being created by you from those remote workers banding together.

I too hit the 50. For the last 8 years I been 100% remote and seen the office ONE time only and that was just to hug a buddy happy retirement. Later on I found out his wages were cut and he found a new job. I quickly joined him with a competitor.

The pro RTO people are nothing short of power hungry. They like flexing their will against others. That’s why having leverage and a huge f*ck you fund is necessary. Especially when it’s going to take a year to un frack this IT job economy. A quick fix would be removal of all IT h1b. The that would get Americans back to work. We all know they use it to keep wages down.

Dell does this but continues to outsource to India and China where communication is an epic problem that has never been solved. This is nothing short of a stealth layoff. If they were so interested in communicating they would hire all US and stop the outsourcing.

This is utter bullsh*t and everyone knows it.

Re:Dropbox announces 20% global workforce reduction on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @12:28PM (#41997036)
This is why people should build a huge ass f-u fund and not look back.
Re:Wazuh – open-source Security Platform on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @12:26PM (#41997005)
I have first hand experience with this product for over 2 years. It is a PITA from a SRE/Devops Security point of view. Things constantly break, the indexes, emailing reports, just general bit rot. The source code is at best a good first attempt, but sorely lacking.

I have built from ground up 2 SIEMS.

Re:Yi-Coder: A Small but Mighty LLM for Code on Thursday September 05, 2024 @09:45AM (#41456567)
I tested this out on my workload ( SRE/Devops/C#/Golang/C++ ). it started responding about non-sense on a simple write me boto python script that changes x ,y,z value.

Then I tried other questions in my past to compare... However, I believe the engineer who did the LLM, just used the questions in benchmarks.

One instance after a hour of use ( I stopped then ) it answered one question with 4 different programming languages, and answers that was no way related to the question.

the author(s) of the article, completely ignore the cpu itself can be patched. there is microcode underneath the ARM instructions for such scenarios. Look at intel, there has been undocumented microcode for decades I beleive these articles are just hype for street cred.
Re:Ask HN: Has the tech recession affected you? on Monday January 08, 2024 @06:37PM (#38920090)
Listen to me, what hurts most people. is DEBT and run away spending. Stop both of it.

I been through 2000,2008, 20015(:) and 2023, layoff a few times, and my answer now is, shut up and pay me. Build a 1 or 2 year F-U fund and have zero debt. You know what happens after a layoff if you have that? Nothing. you sleep well and start looking for a Gig or FTE without the pressure of bills. It shows up in interviews.

Re:I got robbed of my first kernel contribution on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @11:49AM (#37676476)
he is not the only one, or will be the last. Having your name on the main line of the kernel is really worth $$$. However here is a pro tip.

FreeBSD, being a kernel commit, and having your name in it, you will be snatched up by various companies that use it, and not only puts a footnote that they do.

Example, Apple, Playstation, Juniper, Oracle, etc.

BSD pays off more.

Re:HelloSystem: A graphical OS built on FreeBSD on Friday August 25, 2023 @06:23PM (#37267759)
I love FreeBSD on personal servers and workstations. But lean into FreeBSD not into macOS look and feel. The m2 macs make it the best workstation out there. If you have that there is no business need for this os.

Run it for fun but it’s never going to reach mass appeal

Re:Cophone – Your Virtual Smartphone on Friday July 28, 2023 @11:13AM (#36908008)
some of us are trying to get rid of the smart phone ;). I want a flip phone but 2FA is a problem with flip phones. I recently started to use 1password paid just 2FA.

on a serious note, this is unfortunately what scammers like to use, it would be prudent to lock it down before scammers put you in the middle of a legal cases. I have a long story, I tell people about scammmers, but in the case, please be careful. Grandma is getting conned by these telephone virtual numbers.

I used this years ago and the comments reminded me why I never used it again. Common theme in the comments it’s a nightmare. I do recall it being ungodly prickly to get it to work and debug.

Now days unless it is required for performance I doing up grpc to handle library calls. I’m that lazy. Lazier than a node developer that imports the world for a hello world health check.

Re:Breaking java.lang.String on Wednesday July 12, 2023 @09:14AM (#36694053)
in the words of linus, java is a horrible language.
Re:Deno 1.35: A fast and convenient way to build web servers on Wednesday July 05, 2023 @01:19PM (#36603620)
I feel that using words like "fast" and "convenient" with deno TS/ node JS, is an utter lie. Have you seen the horrible mess of web development caused by JS platform taking over backend and mb of js files just to write a text to a DOM element?

Finally Douglas Crawford is admitting what we all said more than a decade ago. Its time to move on from javascript and learn from our mistakes, USING TS from MS, is not learning from our mistakes. Using Node & Deno is not learning, its patching a horrible played out solution to the next generation.

what to use now? who knows, but enough of the code bloat. Enough of OOP that has horrible.

for a web request to take more than 10 ms with the modern cpu is utterly full of bloat. Has anyone seen the one where typing in chrome's search box, causes 1000 std::string allocations?

Yes its that bad. Let it die and MOV on, =fromBloatHell

Re:File for Divorce from LLVM on Friday June 30, 2023 @01:25PM (#36538810)
Andrew even thinking about dropping LLVM, says all I need to know. Its going to become the next D language of 2020s. LLVM has decades of mistakes FIXED, and rewriting the first time, even the 6th time is always... filled with huge mistakes and security issues...HUGE.

brew uninstall zig. Thats what I did when I read it. I do not want to waste any of my time on soon to be dustbin tech.

Re:Tungsten Gold Plated Bar on Saturday March 18, 2023 @11:09AM (#35209693)
finding that amount of gold bars is incredibly hard. People usually respond "comex & london" has gold bars? I dare say 30% are fake, numerous occasions where gold bars stored in the vault are fake.
Re:Now IBM Watson Health, sorry, Merative decimates staff on Saturday February 25, 2023 @10:22AM (#34937295)
IBM has been sued multiple times and lost multiple times on ageism. Recently they settled on Jan 23rd, because discovery found a email trail that they do not want exposed to the public.
Re:I switched careers but can’t find a job on Thursday February 23, 2023 @09:52AM (#34911308)
I read article a few years ago that described why this happens.

It boils down to this, people with zero experiences are in it for the $, and they will not stay around. It takes 1 to 2 years to take a jr to mid level. During that time, you are stealing time from Sr devs that could be producing something else.

The conclusion of the article, is that it is a huge risk taking bootcamp graduates because if they end up working out, they will take the first job offer that the time spent is wasted.

Partly reason why on the last teams I been on, we refuse, because we get burned every time. We wait till management has enough budget to hire a senior to avoid these issues.

My advice, accept those low paying offers, get the 1-2 to years experience. After you prove yourself, people will come and go while at the job. You can join one of those companies after you prove yourself.

Re:Flutter Desktop Isn't There Yet on Friday February 03, 2023 @03:17PM (#34647133)
I have 2 LOB on the desktop. Is Jank an issue? Only to those who have 100+ refresh rates.

Corporate wise , nah, its fine, Jank effects heavy animations. Even then the 3-4 encounters was fixed by some smart resource usage. We are trying the 3.7 solution. If not, then stick with the idea don't try to animate the animation.

Desktop ready? Corporations yes. Make the next unreal 5.x game with it? nope.

Re:Embrace the Chaos: How to Write a Code Editor in 4 Months on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @01:29PM (#34599462)
Turbo C for dos was written in 2 1/2 months. Now it takes almost 2 years to write a code editor? This is not a ding towards the OP. It is an awareness that something has gone fundamentally wrong with development.

vscode and modern IDE now take 1-2 gb of ram for medium projects. What has caused so much resource usage?

bingo. there is a flag you can set that eliminates most , if not all. It's not slow cause it's written in 'python'. It's slow because of safety.
Re:Ask HN: If Dart can do it, then why can't Rust? on Thursday January 19, 2023 @10:52AM (#34441610)
This question is easily answered if the OP would attempt to UI in rust. Rust isnt there, nor will it ever be. Swift is there cause Apple focus on generating SwiftUI.
welp time for the pig to talk about reality.

#1, you are spot on, with the free money, and ZIRP, it has created 1000s of zombie companies are a live because they have access to the money. There are two valuations to consider when talking about this bubble.

a. Companies that make zero $$$ or near to it, and worth billions. Those are the ones that are going to be worthless after the bubble pops. b. Companies that make money, just not enough to be profitable. There are few out there, but they are ones that will get effected the most. Some have valuations that should be significantly higher, but not. c. Companies that producing $$$ and can cover expenses. PE ratios are out of sync, they are too high for what EPS they give.

What is going to happen? If the ZIRP doesn't come back or too late, you are going to see a lot of money and zombie companies get hurt hard. I think this is necessary, so good companies can transverse to a correct risk vs reward.

The biggest problem people living in the west, US, is the multipolar world is coming. US is not prepared for it, and if anything, resisting. Imagine 50% of the world rejecting the USD. It is not far off. US is now 59% of all global trade. Getting below 50% will have devastating effects. Inflation as you see it now, will be hyperinflation. The world is going multipolar, and US is not prepared.

Re:Novell NetWare: The King Returns from the Dead (2001) on Monday December 26, 2022 @07:20PM (#34143418)
this man speaks the truth. IPX/SPX was king back then. Frankly, SPX is recognized today as better 'tcp'/'packet' performance than ipv4.

If it ever comes back it needs to stick to its roots. LAN performance was stellar, and still is. I think a certain high level bank still runs it, cause no hackers understand the lan protocol.

I had this happen a few times. My response is, you have to pay for 3 years at the rate. It does not mean you work 3 years, you are paid for the contract,6 months, etc.

What happens, I had two say no way, one said yes. The two said no way, you move on.

Re:Lazarus IDE – write once, compile anywhere on Sunday September 11, 2022 @05:07AM (#32798061)
maui/xamarin is terrible( MAUI is xamarin renamed).

It can't build a macOS desktop version. This was found out a week ago in a "shipping to production" thus forcing a certain team to say no macOS version until v2.. Which is now flutter 3.x now. Flutter better? nah.. just it has a macOS desktop option now.

Nah, dealers are hiding inventory. NPR didn't bother checking in the back.
electron apps are near instant no install with me and others. Exceptions exist, but taking a gb of ram to edit a 9.2k file is insanity. I think 1Password lost its way, especially on the subscription model.
Re:.NET MAUI on Saturday August 20, 2022 @06:33PM (#32535727)
I took a look, however stopped. It is all fine, but linux support is "community" and that's just not good enough when there is ubuntu desktop units on the most sr engineer staff.

I assumed it would have linux desktop support on day one, that was a huge miss on MS part.

Re:Think Different(ly) – Development Done on Windows on Friday August 12, 2022 @07:47AM (#32437052)
WSL2 with GUI is heaven sent. I like to add the following comment to this whole win/linux/Mac debate.

Windows 10/11 I use 11. The driver support is stellar. Network, Video, Cuda, USB support.. Mouse, Monitor... all of it is highly supported and ready.

Sometimes with native linux you missing out on the best drivers.

Besides, middle of day of prod hell, you want to go take a break. Load up MSFS2020, put your VR headset on, and enjoy Mt Fuji or grand cannon in a FA18.....
