My recollection of events were essentially Ian gets drunk, knocks on neighbors door and makes noise. Police come to "Deal with him"
If his twitter rant was honest then the police beat him possibly causing a concussion.
Whether you want to say that's his fault for being belligerent is up to your personal principles.
He gets concussion and starts strange rant. AFAIK Ian never had a history of this kind of behavior. Maybe his family stated differently. Maybe if they stated he had a history it was of alcohol abuse and not the kind of schizophrenic behavior he was portraying on Twitter.
I take it everyone didn't really look into it much further because lack of options. "Police report says they had a drunk belligerent man come in and then they released him."
Personally, given modern videos of police behavior I believe it is possible he was "acting foolish maybe even violent" at the station due to intoxication and one or more cops decided to shut him up.
Then it kind of ends up being like an Aaron Swartz situation. They weren't murdered but I think they were both victims of improper justice.
Maybe I get down-voted for being a bit brash here or ignorant of more facts with the story but I think people kind of takes on this attitude of "Well, I'm alive... moving on".
His tweet about spending the rest of his life fighting injustice is the kind of chilling reality of this mentality.
No-one really cares until they or their family have suffered injustice, prejudice, or unfair bias.
Or maybe he really was an Ahole (behind closed doors) if his tweets were an honest realization of his inner self and that's why no-one cares to defend a racist.
So, I think you're right. I think we will never know and I think maybe people don't talk about it because there's a certain kind of professionalism expected of people.
As John Stewart said, you can have great respect for police and simultaneously hold them to a higher standard.
Or maybe we should be talking about alcoholism. I don't know but like you I also feel uncomfortable with people saying "Dedicated to this guy" because it feels phony on some level.
If he had a history of mental illness; as much as I wish his family peace I think society is better if we know the full story.
Recently read the Wiki page on Jim Carey giving his ex-girlfriend (who comitted suicide after he broke up with her) S.T.D. allegedly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Carrey#Relationships
As much as I want to ignore reality like everyone else, I think we have a huge problem with phoniness that just makes things harder to cope with.
Stockholm Syndrome.
"...something just irks the hell out of me that they think that this is a cool thing to do."
Yeah, restricted freedom and anti-democratic business practices irks a whole lot of us. :)

Here's a screenshot of something I prototyped. http://pasteboard.co/y6bxRPA3e.png
The idea that if we help each other when we are in a position to. (Low cost for us. High cost for other).
Also don't cost others suffering.
How you look at it. Are we being selfish or selfless is up to your personal preference of optimism / skepticism. It doesn't really matter.
Ideally if you believe in a type of consciousness rebirth - Likely not taking anything from past life but as we were never dead our consciousness probably* mutates to being a different person.(Do you really think you "Are" the person you were at birth?) -
Then you will want to have enlightened self interest. Personally I believe causing others suffering (Eating animals ect) is a kind of cannibalism / self inflicting harm.
Why is it that we think of ourselves as OTHER?
Survival is at our core but otherwise it is foolish not to work together.
I'm afraid society is moving towards a kind of semen race to the top. Mindless acquisition of material goods to satisfy the ego. We can do better.
I always wished the Puppy project would allow better browsing on the raspberry pi.
I really dislike the new Raspberry pi toolbar / desktop
I use Jython with LibGDX and I wrote a class-loader that lets me run the code on Android too (interpreted so theoretically don't have to compile Dalvik)
I was doing some OpenGl testing here https://twitter.com/JadenHorst/status/787449615503196160
I'd like to see some modular pipeline that allows for quality rendering - Ambient Occlusion / Shadow Mapping without having to learn someone else's GUI.
Godot and some other engines have potential but there just seems to be too much learning curve and lack of "commercial - like" examples / community.
It'd be nice if there could be a "Blender" for Video Games given how many people probably want one.
I don't have a feed of "He's evil" "She's evil". I saw two bad candidates and I understand where people are coming from with their votes.
I'd like to see most independents / democratic people unite under a real progressive platform next election and stop the extremist cycle of social issues vs fear mongering.
Some men just want to watch the world burn!
These softwares are so terrible for the world. Terrible for any person trying to make a living programming and terrible for education.
I only realized recently how easy* it is to create realistic graphics using libre software. (I believe this is what draws most people to Unity - forget that it's hard to replicate their demos)
Implement the features I want
Forget about all the bloat I don't want
Get all the benefits of my custom software, favorite os and editor.
However, You can embed Racket in the Native C SDK examples if that's what you're looking for..

It's frightening. We grew up saying things like "If I lived in Germany I would not be evil like those guys"
Well here is Peter Thiel, Investor of Facebook, Investor in Hulk Hogan's lawsuit, and now investor in the end
of the United States of America as we knew it.
We will look back at a later date and say, "Back in 2016, America was pretty great"
It started as a place for dudes to see if girls had boyfriends. Now, it's all about using people's baby pictures to sell advertisements.
I don't know why women would want to use a service that is so inherently anti-woman.
Thiel says weird things like "Tell me something that's true that no one agrees with you on"
Which happens to fit the mold of a good startup.
It's also what crazy people think their bad ideas fit into.
Do these people know what they are getting themselves into and how does that compare to Porn?
Feel free to answer however... I'm genuinely curious.
As long as the money is coming in they don't have to change a thing.
But it begs a different question. What's all the money for if you're not going to have any fun?
At least do some live drop / break / blend tests or something to spice things up.
How about just put in the work and learn the hard way?
Someone had to say Elon is Saving the World.
Of course that's ridiculous but we put guys like Gates and Musk on a pedestal
and then we're being so edgy when we say they're not really that great.
He's doing some interesting things and saying some interesting things.
I don't think he's playing a chess game. I think he was having fun.
A person asked him a question outside of his expertise and he answered it.
The boring thing to do is say "I don't know ask an expert".
Of course people are only paying attention because he's a celebrity Intellect.
The Gear VR was a really cool device despite The Oculus software being crap. (Forcing online connectivity for offline app)
The device made me sick for hours after I used it personally.
Worth it!
It seems like people commenting don't want to take in the point of view that VR is just too early at this point.
VR is very cool but you don't want to develop for the hype train unless you have the dedication to get over
the hurdles and can take a a financial upset.
They don't care that you don't like their work environment. They have money; you need money and have little options.
I think instead of being interested in recycling talent; Amazon is interested in those who will take the most abuse.
It's just crazy to see them beat the competition so badly.
I remember seeing the concept car for the Chevy Volt a few years ago and thinking how cool it was.
Then they released it and made it aerodynamic and thus BORING.
It's pretty nuts this car is 35k and the list of advantages to disadvantages can be summed as.
There's no reason to buy any other car.
I just argue it's more like
[Consumer] diluted Win-Win [King]
I posted another response with more details of better (Subjective) GPL'd community friendly engines.
Sure. I cherry picked the negative because of this.
There are too many game engines that are made for special purpose studios (People who have experience with them)
I think there are a lot better GPL'd engines people should use so the community benefits; not Candy Trademark king King.com
Particularly Libgdx; Blender3d ; Godot
Now that I think about it game engines are a bit like Linux Distros in that all the options possibly dilutes the greater purpose.
Also you need a Google account to use it.
Recently Windows 10 showing Tomb Raider advertisements. Windows 7 upgrading to 10 without permission.
This article claims Microsoft is embracing open source in a way that is not just to extend and distinguish.
In my limited knowledge it looks like adaptation. They tried to extinguish; didn't work They tried to extend and extinguish. Now they have to embrace.
Not so fun fact. "Microsoft paid a guy named Ken Brown to write a book saying Linus stole Linux from my MINIX 1 system." - Tanenbaum
It feels a lot like an abusive relationship people don't know how to walk away from.

- Recently? Play Store android phones started allowing apps to run ads with your typical virus style "Hey I see you CPU is "Lagging" click to fix Pop-downs.
- My new Samsung phone was an expensive pocket watch / alarm clock. Now it wants me to be a puppet. Like everyone else I thought paying lots of money for something meant it had positive value.
- I get it, I fell for it. Jokes on me - I'm an idiot - something to do with my identity and consumerism.
- I see people online do silly things like port Windows onto their Chromebook (Shed tear). "Look at all these new features!" they proclaim in joy. They don't seem to realize they were allowed that freedom through free software / hardware. It's always something. Video games, convenience, simplicity.
- I'm not ignorant of why these things appear appealing - I wasted much of my life over what I thought was time saving.
- It's like getting granted political asylum and running into the first jail just to be extra sure you're safe.
TL:DR
I tried getting a newer laptop to run Windows a year or so ago believing that like my desktop I could choose to uninstall the Windows and replace it. It was a 64 bit processor running 32 bit windows. 32 bit bootloader. Christ. Then reinstalling Windows to sell it. Oh now the mouse and keyboard doesn't work because the drivers were packaged separately and the repair partition (10gb of the 32gb emmc) is only accessible by a repair specialist.
So when these corps come along with "look at what we've "philanthropically" contributed to your cheap raspberry pi I'm gonna go ahead and steer towards a future without all the B.S.
I'd love to hear more about how these corps are symbiotic for a better technical future (partial sarcasm).
After reading and accepting the ideas the person can't say. -"God has a plan for me" or "I'm on a mission from god" To see life positively one has to interpret things like -"I'm so lucky my ID created me" into -"I'm lucky to be in this small habitual space in the galaxy where the sun shines and I don't have to fear death on a daily basis."
Reviews insist it's depressing but I don't think so. I'm not going to personally go shouting at people to "accept the truth". An atheist version of a Jehovas Witness is quite similarly obnoxious.
That said they started emailing me profiles that I viewed and didn't follow which feels invasive.
