What enrages me is the longstanding precedent that the government cannot read your letters without a warrant, but apparently electronic messages that are directly analogous are fair game.
The security research is probably the biggest reason to use local models as it seems like the big service providers will ban you for life if you even hint at doing that.
Honestly, it's not a terrible idea to start asking people to run AI agents as a red team to find vulnerabilities.
Re:How Protein Took over the World on Saturday October 10, 2026 @12:59PM (#50034807)
I mean this is not a bad thing, I personally feel more sated eating protein-enriched food and am less likely to snack excessively.
I stand corrected, thanks. Definitely reboot or power off.
I think it's prudent for everyone to turn off your phone or put it into Lockdown mode (which I think is the same as Before First Unlock) while going through security checkpoints. This applies to anyone in the world.
Re:Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member' on Thursday September 17, 2026 @10:15AM (#49741114)
Personally, I take everything he says and does seriously. I advise non-citizens visiting to turn their social media to private and bring a burner phone to immigration checkpoints. For citizens, turning off your phone should be enough.

There are some amazing examples of procedural generation though, such as Minecraft terrain and the orcs from Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.
There is no reason not to use propane or butane, they have low global warming potential and is cheap. The fire risk is overstated, no one thinks twice about carrying a lighter in their pocket.
Re:Why getting your hands dirty is good for you on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @10:13AM (#49610630)
I have some beef with the sunscreen people, mostly because of 3 things:

- Skin cancer is by far the least deadly type of cancer and nearly always just requires some low-risk skin removal.

- Getting a light tan feels amazing. Your whole body feels warmer.

- Vitamin D.

I don't know about you guys but if I started timing my sauna visits, I would get MORE stressed out.
Also you can resell Switch cartridges.

You ever hear of Dubai lamps? Apparently underdriving LEDs makes them last much longer.
Re:So you want to use plants to reduce CO₂ on Thursday July 30, 2026 @03:26PM (#49114535)
Sadly I am a bit hopeless about climate change. Even if every person on earth dropped everything and started making biochar to be buried it would not sequester enough carbon to make a difference.
>Anyone who cares about security

I have something hilarious to tell you about IoT apps

> quitting my fully vested tech job to fuck off and be a cook for a while

I am also fantasizing about this and am only holding off from doing it because of the social stigma (what idiot would quit a well paid full-time job). My biggest issue with the software industry is the feverish shiny-new-thing syndrome that AI is causing (and my current company is all in on this, with "Hyper-Velocity Engineering" panels). Maybe I don't want to move at light speed and would rather stop and smell the roses.

Re:Claude Code Is Steganographically Marking Requests on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @01:11PM (#48735821)
I would guess it is to avoid model lock-in.
Re:Have You Restarted Your Computer This Week? on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @10:55AM (#48733580)
There are enough crappy win32 applications that you probably should restart Windows PCs nightly.
Re:New satellites from years to weeks, days, or hours on Friday June 26, 2026 @05:05PM (#48691949)
I hope I am not alone in thinking the military needs to be defunded in the USA. Nuclear weapons mean that there is zero strategic threat and any future wars will be regional. Drawdown of oversea bases is long overdue.
I would guess prevention of using Claude as a pentesting or hacking platform. This could mean that every script kiddie out there would be a massive risk.
I would hope that librarians vet those and exclude them before they hit the shelves :(.
I've starting going back to books, either at the library or e-books. Librarians are very good at telling you if nonfiction is biased, outdated, or incorrect.
You don't need custom built anything, ChatGPT could generate corporate initiatives and PR statements all day and no one would notice.
They did use space tape (Kapton) and epoxy for that weird case with the hole drilled in the ISS.
I'm experiencing a similar thing- company pushes online lectures but don't even think about putting them on the sprint board.
Re:I Am Retiring from Tech to Live Offline on Friday May 29, 2026 @12:01PM (#48324987)
brother I've thought about the tech to blue collar transition too. for me, I would choose plumbing or electrical, but it seems like 4 years of low apprentice wages are unavoidable.
Re:I'm Tired of Talking to AI on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @10:23AM (#48294858)
For what they are worth, nuclear weapons are still preventing large-scale conflict between world powers.
Re:I'm Tired of Talking to AI on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @09:41AM (#48294231)
I've started to go low-tech and ask noai.duckduckgo.com first, and then, gasp, go to the local library for some books on my hobbies.
Re:The seed oil panic is hurting my cardiac patients on Sunday May 24, 2026 @12:04PM (#48258386)
The seed oil panic is quite possibly the dumbest health craze of the decade- I saw a chef saying beef tallow was healthy!
