Marc Andreesen has first-hand knowledge that absolutely refutes what you are saying.

The Democratic party is more anti-ai than the Republican party and unfortunately both of them are increasingly responding to astroturfed populism.

Do you think Bernie Sanders in AOC are pro-ai? Are you kidding me? Have you seen what they say and the legislation they propose?

If you think that anthropic wasn't pushing aggressive regulatory capture legislation in the Biden administration, why do you think they hired a bunch of people from it?
Yep. Lighting is a blatant, shameless rip off of Jeremy Howard's FastAI library BTW.

You basically just parroted a bunch of Howard Zinn agitprop and didn't cite a single example that was remotely similar to this specific incident, because you literally can't. What exactly is your motivation here, because it's certainly not truth-seeking.

Please cite an example.
Student/teacher ratios have gone down, not up over the last few decades. This isn't a lack of funding.

Teachers are put in an impossible position with students who come from homes where the parents don't do their proper jobs. It's never been easier to be a neglectful parent. Your child will be entertained non-stop by an iPad and a video game system. They won't get bored and bother you. You can send them to their room and do whatever you want if you don't care if they are sleeping or not, as long as they are quiet.

The "iPad babies" are an epidemic in schools.

Source:

My sister is a K-12 educator in a poor, rural public school system in southeastern Virginia.

In recent years, she's seen a surge in students who are sorted, improperly, into special education classes. These are students that exhibit symptoms of various learning disabilities, but these symptoms heavily overlap with the symptoms of children who are sleep deprived and over stimulated by dopamine activating content on the devices they are addicted to.

It's a shame that the UK isn't making their own EVs. It's a nation with a long tradition of manufacturing and a working class hungry for opportunities.

Both Labour and the Conservative parties seem to have resigned the nation to only being a financial hub.

This is where teaching my teenage son how to drive was a great preparation. Also my wife is not a great driver and I've been married to her for 20 years.

Compared to either one of them, FSD is way less stressful and is a vastly better driver.

"The code isn't clean"

Skill issue. If you just one-shot everything, sure, you'll get a messy codebase. But if you just manage it like a talented junior dev, review the code, provide feedback, and iterate, you get very clean code. Minus the arguing you get from some OCD moron human who is attached to their weird line length formatting quirk.

Re:I am leaving the AI party after one drink on Friday March 27, 2026 @06:26PM (#47549191)
They care how much you charge them to build it, and they care how fast you deliver it to them. The idea that they don't makes me question whether or not you have ever been self-employed in your entire life. This kind of thinking makes me think you have always been a drone getting paid by a boss.

Excellent point on the automatic car.

I love driving a manual transmission. But I also understood why it was so hard for me to find a new Jeep Wrangler with a manual transmission a few years ago.

Re:I am leaving the AI party after one drink on Friday March 27, 2026 @01:10PM (#47545421)
"I'm not going to use this technology that obviously enhances my productivity because <insert emotional subjective reasoning that no customer would ever care about here>."

I think a lot of people have forgotten why we actually get paid to write code. The person who wants an automated billing system doesn't care if you hand-typed it or not, or if the CSS that would have taken 2 hours to write took 8 seconds via an AI plus 60 seconds of you tweaking a border you didn't like. They just want their billing system. And if you are the person that takes 20x longer to build it, you're going to quickly get outcompeted. Sorry.

There was absolutely no reason to flag my comment, other than the fact that you disagree with it because it penetrates your Bay Area bubble of distorted reality.

I don't know what the comment you are replying to was talking about, and I agree that "white culture" is an absurd false construct, because "white" is a false construct. I understand flagging stuff like that, but nothing in my comment warranted it. I expressed a logical opinion. The percentage of people in the United States present on legal visas getting caught up by ICE is near-zero. It's an entirely propagandistic narrative to suggest otherwise, based entirely on motivated reasoning.

And before you label me a bigot or whatever to feed your sense of moral superiority, be aware that I'm the only "white" person in my household, and I'm also, by far, the most "liberal". Outside of the Bay Area, a lot of people of color like my wife and her family absolutely despise your politics, viewing them as luxury beliefs.

My politics are basically identical to Garry Tan's, but you've lost the plot so much that you felt a need to flag my comment.

It's absolutely overly cynical and also evidence that you are completely misinformed.

It's never happened in the entire history of this country, including when we literally had a Civil War.

Your media sources are creating a belief in your head that is utterly deranged from reality.

For example, ICE agents haven't "murdered legal observers" in any other locations than Minneapolis, despite the fact that they are operating all over the country. The reason for this is that the "legal observers" were actually super aggressive protesters in an environment that bordered on a riot due to the fact that local police were not creating a perimeter for these operations. Note that none of this has happened in Texas or Arizona or North Carolina or Florida, despite the fact that vastly more deportations are occurring in those locations. But your media doesn't tell you these details, does it?

I worked in the Pentagon for 10 years, and got my beak wet with neural nets there very early, back when we were using Playstation 3s for their GPUs.

I was staunchly against the Iraq war, but even when Bush was president I didn't let it compromise my patriotism.

The amount of people on here who ignore the fact that Iran was the primary enabler of Hamas' attack on 10/7/23, and therefore sowed the seeds of the destruction of Gaza, is insane. Basically, if Trump does a thing, they are against it, independent of the thing. There is no principle, just reactionary hatred. If Biden had launched this war, none of these people would have had a problem with it. I am 100% positive on that assumption.

The narcissism of small differences on full display here.

There isn't a single "red state" in the US that requires women to cover their heads and bodies in public or executes people for speaking out against the "regime".

But you pretend like that's the case, while acting like Iran was just minding their own business when they have exported terror for decades, along with drones being used to murder Ukrainian civilians. I mean, I guess supporting Ukraine was soooo 2022-23, and now we're on to the new fashion trend of supporting the people helping to murder them because "orange man bad."

You know what else would make everything worse? A totalitarian theocratic regime with long range ballistic missiles and nukes.

But hey, it's not like they funded and backed a bunch of theocratic fanatics who committed a mass atrocity in Israel and provoked a war that destroyed Gaza or anything, right? Or that they were exporting massive quantities of drones to Putin for him to use to murder Ukrainian civilians, right? They were nice guys, and the 35K protesters they murdered deserved it, right?

We should have just let things keep rolling the way they were. It was all going so well, and at no point would the regime that was actively inciting terrorism all over the world for the last 47 years be a threat if they got nukes on the ICBMs we now know they had been a problem. I mean, heck, those missiles they shot at Diego Garcia were just fireworks, purely for decorative purposes, right?

The HN bubble is truly grand. My college girlfriend was the daughter of parents who fled the Ayatollah in 79. You people on here think everyone shares your values and worldview, and that the mullahs in Iran are rational actors. They are not. They are part of a specific sect of Shiite Islam that truly believes that bringing about an apocalypse is a desirable thing. It's such a foreign concept to you that you dismiss it as fantasy and misinformation. But it's real. And you simply lack the life experience to know it. You've never seen entire masses of people infected with the radical religious mind viruses that those of us with firsthand experience with religious fundamentalists have seen.

Imagine the Branch Davidians in Waco with nukes, and you start to scratch the surface of what this would look like if you let it play out.

You have made a false claim. What is your evidence that I am religious, let alone a religious radical?

I mean, if we're going to make accusations based on perceived political tribal allegiances, I can say to you with equal certainty that you're a neo-Marxist.

Of course I don't know that. And you don't know anything about me.

Re:Anthropic tries to hide Claude's AI actions. Devs hate it on Monday February 16, 2026 @11:04AM (#47036710)
6 months?

I've been using LLMs to augment development since early December 2023. I've expanded the scope and complexity of the changes made since then as the models grew. Before beads existed, I used a folder of markdown files for externalized memory.

Just because you were late to the party doesn't mean all of us were.

Re:Anthropic tries to hide Claude's AI actions. Devs hate it on Monday February 16, 2026 @09:18AM (#47035248)
I work at a company with approximately $1 million in revenue per engineer and multiple 10+ year old codebases.

We use agents very aggressively, combined with beads, tons of tests, etc.

You treat them like any developer, and review the code in PRs, provide feedback, have the agents act, and merge when it's good.

We have gained tremendous velocity and have been able to tackle far more out of the backlog that we'd been forced to keep in the icebox before.

This idea of setting the bar at "agents work without code reviews" is nuts.

I've been on HN for well over 10 years. I literally volunteered for Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns, and my comments in that time period clearly show my politics. I taught free web scraping workshops at the Center for American Progress to journalists back then. None of my policy preferences have changed. What's changed is the frothing at the mouth radicalism and moralizing of the team I used to support.

I'm not religious, and hate religious radicals, but ideologues act identically, just with secular idols. I didn't see that until I watched what the leftist ideologies did to the quality of life in two places I used to live in:

SF and Boulder.

I'm a 2012 Democrat, which makes me a fascist to a 2026 Democrat.

You're entirely motivated by politics here. Everything is backwards reasoning from that. You don't like the guy because he is right wing and you are not right wing.

Despite the fact that you would call the police on a trespasser if they took up residence in your home without permission, or even your yard without your permission, you don't believe in borders or any kind of concept of them. Therefore, you don't like ICE.

Got it.

It's incredibly hypocritical but I understand it.

And anyone that helps ice is bad and anyone that is right-wing is bad and therefore Peter Thiel is bad and therefore everything he says you can distort and weaponize through a filter of "he's a Nazi".

Let's just be clear here:

Virtually every country on the planet enforces their borders and kicks people out if they are overstaying their visas or have snuck in without permission. If you have a problem with ICE, you have a problem with borders and national sovereignty. And if you still believe in those things but still don't like it, then you don't understand game theory. If someone can simply jump a fence and then be allowed to stay then everyone will jump the fence.

Garry is a good person and smearing people over their church is a disgusting thing to do.

I am now going to sit here and listen to this talk because I guarantee it's not saying what you think it's saying. And I don't want to listen to it. It's not a topic that interests me. But I guarantee you are completely distorting what was stated in that topic for maximum effect, entirely motivated by left-wing politics.

"One sticking point, however, is who’s backing the company: Peter Thiel, the cofounder of ICE-approved surveillance firm Palantir."

This article is entirely motivated by left-wing politics. It's that simple. I just wish they would come out and say it instead of pretending it's about privacy.

If a company that wasn't owned by a guy that is associated as right-wing was doing the same thing, this article wouldn't be sitting here.

The Epstein guilt by association parts? Yeah, that creep was a hyper networker and leveraged that as a tactic.

And in SV, nobody is in those files more than Reid Hoffman.

He didn't just go to the island dozens of times he went to the ranch.

But he donates money to the Democratic Party and is anti-Trump so we don't see articles on HN smearing everything connected to him, do we?

It's all politics. All of this.

It is a constant stream of political activism masquerading as journalism. It's like this all over the SV tech space.

Re:Descent, ported to the web on Sunday February 15, 2026 @08:56AM (#47023685)
I haven't heard of it, but I loved Descent, and even bought Descent: Freespace back in the day.

I will have to check out Overload.

Reminder that HN is SV centered and therefore everyone and everything is oriented around tribal group think.

Meta was funded by Thiel, yet most of the people in this thread use their products.

The CCP has technology that dwarfs Palantir, but a ton of people in this thread use TikTok, because they don't recognize fascism unless it's perpetrated by somebody that looks like the Nazis they see in movies.

I grew up around brainwashed religious zealots. I hated it. Everything was this moralistic condemnation and guilt by association game, played by people who had absolutely no sense of perspective and had zero interactions outside of there group think circles. Constantly condemning people they don't know and have never met and don't understand.

I've been on HN for 13 years now. It looks more and more like that every day.

This comment will be down voted without any substantive critique other than "I guess you're a fascist too."

Meanwhile, Discord will not have the slightest tiny drop in user numbers, because nobody outside of this moralistic circle jerk cares.

Re:The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline on Saturday February 14, 2026 @07:56AM (#47014194)
With infant care it's an edge case. Obviously. Everyone knows this.

Being raised by a single dad, I know this more than most. People are always surprised because it's NOVEL.

I just wish people would remember how awful and unprofessional and lazy most "journalists" are in 2026.

It's a slop job now.

Ars Technica, a supposedly reputable institution, has no editorial review. No checks. Just a lazy slop cannon journalist prompting an LLM to research and write articles for her.

Ask yourself if you think it's much different at other publications.

This is phenomenal stuff man.

I'm a big fan of your other work, specifically agent mail.

Re:Ex-GitHub CEO Launches a New Developer Platform for AI Agents on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @11:34AM (#46977108)
The most active HNers are just extremely negative on AI. I understand the impulse (you spend years honing your craft, and then something comes along and automates major portions of it) but it's driven by emotion and ego-defense and those engaged in it simply don't recognize what's motivating them. Their ego-defense is actually self-fulfilling, because they don't even try to properly learn how to leverage LLMs for coding so they give it a huge task they want it to fail on, don't properly break it into tasks, and then say "i told you it sucks" when it fails to one shot it.
