Re:Google Apps drop support for IE9 on Thursday November 07, 2013 @05:18AM (#6688642)
Even though Chrome automatically updates on people's personal computers, bureaucracies like my university still use a version that is more than a year old (could be over 2 yrs). I hope Google finds a way to force such luddite organisations to update regularly.
I had a terrible experience with MT a couple of years ago. GoDaddy won't be ruining them. They wrecked themselves.

CTRL + Down brings up thumbnails of the current application's windows, though it isn't particularly keyboard friendly.
Re:The Real Reason The Poor Go Without Bank Accounts on Saturday September 21, 2013 @11:09PM (#6425653)
I heard of a guy that did that and his ex girlfriend told her new gangster boyfriend (real gangster) where he kept the money. It's probably safer to keep your money in the bank.
Re:Yahoo reveals its new logo on Thursday September 05, 2013 @04:18AM (#6332831)
Caring != stock value.
Re:Yahoo reveals its new logo on Thursday September 05, 2013 @02:09AM (#6332458)
I avoid literally everything that is owned by Yahoo. This is almost entirely due to how they present themselves. A bad logo is evidence of a company that does not care about their products or services. They are finally making steps to improve their image.
Re:Valencia region government completes switch to LibreOffice on Thursday August 22, 2013 @05:50PM (#6260328)
It is downright citizen hostile when a government uses non-free software. Want to fill out this form? Download the doc file which only displays correctly in Microsoft Office. Have enough money for a computer but not enough for office? Too bad. Microsoft has done a lot of good, but no company/corp deserves a monopoly on virtual paper.
Not all developers/publishers charge higher prices. You can see here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/149928
Re:'Virtual Lolita' Aims to Trap Chatroom Paedophiles on Thursday July 11, 2013 @09:48PM (#6030393)
I can't believe so many people in these comments are apologists for paedophiles (and related terms). Having a problem with the way it is policed is okay. Accepting the act is not.
Re:Make DuckDuckGo your Chrome default search engine on Thursday June 13, 2013 @11:17PM (#5878092)
Better Privacy VS Tailored Search.
Re:iOS 7 on Monday June 10, 2013 @11:18PM (#5859423)
Comments with "Really?" on the end are extremely disrespectful, and I see it all the time. Just because something is obvious and common-sense to you, does not mean it is to someone else. Offending someone is not a good form of persuasion. Please consider not doing that in future because you probably do have good ideas, and it would be nice if people heard them.

Speaking of this design, the icons are asymmetric. More so by the unharmonious colour selection. However, the notification centre and animations are well done.

Re:Poll: What is your primary desktop OS? on Saturday May 25, 2013 @08:17PM (#5769455)
OS X may not be as reliable as advertised. Most people don't have issues. But my mac has significant issues with any software that needs to be installed. Drag-and-drop installs to the applications directory are fine, but anything like Mac app store, Adobe update manager, or Office Mac installers will not function correctly. My apps also frequently crash. I have lost hours in the double-digits to my unreliable mac. Never had these issues on Windows. Now I'm stuck and unsure about any future mac purchase.
Re:Skyrim's Modular Level Design - GDC 2013 Transcript on Thursday April 25, 2013 @11:28PM (#5611329)
The post discusses assets and creating asset modules for constructing their virtual worlds. It would be interesting if they discussed hardware constraints, and how lifting those constraints effects the creative process. The release status of an unreleased console is inconsequential to the information. It has been announced that the new playstation console has 8gb's of ram. In my experience playing Bethesda's games on console and PC, consoles take a significantly longer time to load. Even if a current-generation console is more powerful than a PC, it will be much slower than a PC at loading assets. This has nothing to do with hard-disk speed, as running the game off of equally slow HDD's of a console and a PC, the PC will still significantly quicker. Someone voted me down for my comment. I was not expecting them to cover this in a post about an already-released game. I just said it would be interesting (in future).

We all have to be really careful when commenting on the internet, especially Hacker News, that we are clear. For that I apologise, even if I am quite a bit annoyed, though I realise it is my fault. I have been toying with the idea of building an online community, but I think I will pass on that idea as I don't like excluding people. What did I offer this discussion? = nothing. What did most other people? = nothing. Why are we even discussing this?

Re:Skyrim's Modular Level Design - GDC 2013 Transcript on Thursday April 25, 2013 @06:25PM (#5610330)
It would be good if they addressed load speed. Will the 8Gb of RAM in the PS4 make their next game load new areas immediately now?
Re:The Minecraft Creator Markus Persson Faces Life After Fame on Saturday April 06, 2013 @06:48PM (#5505352)
On my playstation 2 I had a demo disc that had a YaBasic compiler. I wrote game code with my controller. I used other people's source code to make pong and pac-man, and had little understanding of what I was doing - but still managed to change the colours. It also introduced me to manually checking the syntax of the code. http://members.iinet.net.au/~jimshaw/yabasic.me.uk/faq/
Re:New Test for Computers: Grading Essays at College Level on Thursday April 04, 2013 @06:15PM (#5495630)
Well I referenced a Harvard business school public journal and it got flagged as being from Wikipedia. So I do not believe we should let an automated system mark our essays just yet.
Re:Fltdsgn - a showcase of flat UI design on Saturday March 23, 2013 @08:49PM (#5430537)
The next stage is hidden design. I'm not saying this as a joke. It can be very difficult to understand because almost everything is hidden. It could be called minimalism, but it takes it to such a degree people don't see it. Think of the nest thermostat, jawbone bracelet, or even telling a television to start a movie (and having it just do it, without any visual UI).
Re:These engineers quit their jobs to start LeChat on Saturday March 16, 2013 @07:19PM (#5387213)
You may want to research how perceived value can be derived from price. However, your current price may be right for other reasons.
Re:Baby steps toward replacing Google Reader on Friday March 15, 2013 @03:42AM (#5379576)
I enjoy his writing, but I don't take his writing as gospel. As with anything anyone says, we should exercise some judgement on the validity and biases of their ideas.

In 2011 in Marco's podcast he stated that 7" tablet devices don't make any sense, but then in 2012 he had changed his mind when the iPad mini was approaching its announcement. I am not calling him a liar, but just pointing out that opinions change and... opinions are just opinions.

I share his concern that each new feed reading service will use a different sync API, and am happy others will be reading this blog post. Regardless of whether Marco has jumped on the popular story bandwagon or not so he can make a few advertising dollars, this post is of value to enough people to up-vote it.

He has RSI from using the keyboard, so making the editor work with a controller first makes sense because he is the only person using his program at the moment.
Re:Aggressive negative advertising by Microsoft against Google. on Thursday February 07, 2013 @07:35PM (#5185504)
If you have an account you can delete everything (including your email), remove data from specific Google services, or adjust some of their ad targeting assumptions. I cannot remember how to get to the ad targeting settings, but you can find it if you need it.
Re:Minimal wireframing tool - for free on Friday January 04, 2013 @04:59AM (#5006980)
Nice work. I have an unfinished project that is similar to this. It's neat that you have made it so the shape is chosen after drawing. Consider either not changing the cursor to a pointer, or remove the space between the buttons.
Re:OS X emulation layer for Linux on Thursday December 27, 2012 @10:07PM (#4976233)
Codekit, Creative Suite, Evernote, Finder, Fontbook, iTunes, Reeder, Soulver, Sparrow, Quicktime. You could run photoshop.exe in Wine but there are bugs. There are alternatives to the other apps though, but they are not as polished.
Re:No one-click unsubscribe? It's spam. on Sunday December 16, 2012 @09:13PM (#4930508)
I did this with a college newsletter that was spammy, and had no method to unsubscribe. After repeatedly marking the email as spam to no avail, I set a filter up to send the message to the bin.
Re:Mailbox app: Rethinking labels on Friday December 14, 2012 @05:48AM (#4920363)
I use labels for actually labelling things. 'University' 'Receipts' 'Work' 'Family' 'Registrations'. I have Gmail setup to automatically label all my emails. It's wonderful.
Re:Silicon Valley's dirty secret - age bias on Tuesday November 27, 2012 @06:24PM (#4839919)
A couple of years ago I was eighteen, and I needed a job. So I went to a grocery shop and asked if they were hiring, and I got the reply, "We only hire 15 year olds."
Re:Stop telling people to vote on Friday November 09, 2012 @01:38AM (#4761688)
I agree that it improves the quality of outcomes. If the general population does not vote, then minorities will push their own agendas, which may be opposed to the general population.

Some examples in regards to one minority: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/nov/02/usa.religion http://www.hopscotchfilms.com.au/catalogue/god-on-my-side http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Abramoff

Windows Phone 7 connector is available on the Mac app store. It could do with a name change for Windows Phone 8.

Re:Why I now, unfortunately, hate Hacker News.. on Friday August 17, 2012 @06:40PM (#4399176)
(2) probably would not work. Commenters could troll, and then the community replying in disagreement would up-vote their comment.

Here are my ideas: (A)Not showing someone their karma score ever, unless it is negative.

(B)Leaving a line between the comment field and the reply button saying, "Stay constructive."

(C)That line of text could link to the guidelines.

(D)Detect if someone says 'idiot' and then change the line to, "You said 'idiot', do you still want to post?"
