What's funny: the whole article reminds me something Emacs-ish in spirit.

Fascination in combination of interesting tools with very interesting tools in a very very unconventional workflow.

I like it.

I'm certain that I will not use the same workflow but it gave me ideas for my own.

Re:INNER JOIN ON vs WHERE clause on Wednesday October 30, 2024 @09:14AM (#41994433)
Discussion about differences SQL-89 vs SQL-91?

In 2024.

Really?

Re:Taming the beast that is the Django ORM – An introduction on Sunday September 01, 2024 @03:32AM (#41415017)
I would say even more:

- the main reason to use django today is the admin UI

- and the only reason to use django ORM is the admin UI

Re:People person: the greatness of Andrey Platonov on Wednesday July 17, 2024 @06:33PM (#40990969)
Platonov is "must read" if you interested in Russian literature but he's not that great.

Vladimir Sorokin wrote that he was fascinated by Platonov but soon discovered that it's too easy to imitate Platonov style.

Platonov chapter in "Blue Lard" is even more Platonov than Platonov himself.

Disregard what I said I encourage to read "Chevengur" - it's super.

Re:Java's Megalithic Mountain on Tuesday July 16, 2024 @04:11PM (#40979873)
At first I thought it's about Java platform and "megalith" is kind-of monolyth architecture but even bigger ;)
Re:Rust is not about memory safety on Tuesday June 04, 2024 @10:43AM (#40575148)
"Exceptions should be used exceptionally" - I think golang `panic-recover` does exactly this.

They made using `panic` intentionally hard.

Motto: "Don't panic in your code"

Funny thing is that Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Litva) are banned too.

What are you doing Sony?

Re:Why We Hate Working for Big Companies (2018) on Monday April 29, 2024 @03:42PM (#40203127)
Ithink it's a good thing that this problem is unsolvable.

Otherwise: we(humans)'ll just become automotons without any meaning to live

Iran and North Korea don't need open source missiles.

Maybe it's European countries need such projects to be on par with them

Re:Why Pandas feels clunky when coming from R on Friday February 23, 2024 @11:46AM (#39482921)
Pandas is a great library but I was not able to make myself love its data query API.

I discovered that duckdb can make queries to pandas dataframes in SQL (postgresql parser) and do it faster than pandas itself.

Now I have zero motivation pandas queries.

Maybe for coloring or smth like that

Re:Oh My Zsh on Tuesday January 23, 2024 @09:19AM (#39103570)
You're correct: omz adds not a lot to vanilla zsh.

It consists of: - collection of plugins/themes - auto update - way to customize them

Everything could be done directly in .zshrc, it's just a bit more convinient

Re:Oh My Zsh on Tuesday January 23, 2024 @09:10AM (#39103466)
I had exactly same experience: nvm and conda. Both are unrelated to oh-my-zsh completely: they were configured in .zshrc directly
Re:Oh My Zsh on Tuesday January 23, 2024 @09:06AM (#39103423)
I heard a lot about slowness of oh-my-zsh but never experienced it myself.

I had slow starts when I added nvm completion to .zshrc and .. maybe conda environment but that was unrelated to oh-my-zsh

I suspect it was something similar: he had real asthma during childhood but continued taking meds when they were not really needed.

After LSD he just "forgot" to take them

Re:Norwegian: Bokmål vs. Nynorsk on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @05:49AM (#39026044)
I think every natural language is irregular when it comes to numbers.

And about Japanese: you forgot about counters for men, animals, flat things and so on.

You have ichi-ippiku-ippon-hitory - issai And absolutely fascinating "system" for "years old" - everything starts with -sai but 20 years is "hatachi"!

My son "forgot" his asthma after one dose of LSD. Literally - 1.5 year and no problems.

That was absolutely unexpected effect. I still don't know what to think about it.

I'm not a psychodelic enthusiast

Re:"I Contribute to the Windows Kernel. We Are Slower" (2013) on Thursday January 11, 2024 @02:42AM (#38949013)
The only problem with PowerShell (for me) - it came too late. If it was released with .NET 2.0 or 3.0 - maybe I used it more.

When it appeared I already used bash(from git distribution) and python for scripting tasks

Re:The Story of Titanium on Thursday November 23, 2023 @02:21PM (#38396408)
I had IBM notebook with titanium case (before it became Lenovo)
Re:The Story of Titanium on Thursday November 23, 2023 @02:11PM (#38396305)
Great article! Sad it's so USA-centric. It would be great to read "Soviet part" of titanium
Re:SpaceX Loses Starship Spaceraft During Test Flight on Sunday November 19, 2023 @01:58AM (#38329937)
The interesting point for me was:

> Every failing hard drive requires a stressful operation on the remaining disks (resilvering) that may push the next drive to failure.

I saw something similar: RAID array with 5 disks and 3 spare disks. One night controller detected failure, ejected one drive and replaced with spare. After rebuild of RAID it ejected another disk and then another. In an hour all spare disks were used and on fourth failure it stopped work

What was probability of such series of failures?

Re:Find Bilingual Baby Names on Saturday November 11, 2023 @01:55PM (#38233314)
I once worked with a man of Bashkir-Estonian descent. His name is Aivar which I suspect is bilingual: - it sounds Turkic ("ai" is "moon" iirc) - on the other hand there are mentions of Aivor/Aivar from Scandinavia and so on

I tried mixednames.com but Bashkir or Tatar are not available

Re:What Is Propaganda? (1944) on Monday November 06, 2023 @03:06AM (#38159937)
Excuse me I don't understand where is "the problem with Tolstoi" in this sentence. He wrote about every government and every people on the Earth - "every government tries to keep people uneducated"

It's not about tzarism in Russia and not about XIX century

Re:macOS Sonoma Boot Failures on Thursday November 02, 2023 @12:36AM (#38109039)
I do not drag UI elements. I'm still struggling to make my Mac (work notebook) as responsive as my personal i3 notebook.

My perception: current Mac is an oversized iPad without touchscreen

Re:The future of warfare: A $400 drone killing a $2M tank on Tuesday October 31, 2023 @12:31AM (#38080335)
https://lostarmour.info/ - site dedicated to collect, filter and analyze data about "Losses of military equipment in local conflicts of the XXI century" (citation)

It's in Russian but should be readable with translation

Re:Ensō: write now, edit later on Saturday October 28, 2023 @04:01AM (#38048067)
It's same for me. But now I think maybe it's good to try other way.
Re:Gen Z wants less sex in TV and movies on Thursday October 26, 2023 @08:26PM (#38033328)
"Akagi" - no female characters at all. No sarcasm intended - it's a great anime. I showed to my son when he was 11-12 years old
Re:Chandrayaan-3 Lands on the Moon on Wednesday August 23, 2023 @09:31AM (#37235577)
Sh*t happens.

What else?

The brothers Strugazki wrote in 60s a novel "The Final Circle of Paradise" ("Хищные вещи века" literally:"Predatory Things of Age")

The novel describes society that resembles our times. It's kind of spy/criminal investigation but in the end the culprit is just usual things that used in unusual ways

Re:English is a pictographic language with 26 radicals on Monday August 21, 2023 @06:45AM (#37207683)
Pure truth. When somebody says that Chinese/Japanese is hard because of kanji - just show them that English is crazy on almost the same level.

Kanji has more radicals but some of them only on top, some on bottom, some on left or right. And you don't even need to learn them all - rare radicals remembered as "this strange thing that appears only in X"

I worked for a Swiss firm and never noticed anything strange.

Both founders are German speaking. Good guys.

Although that was a small firm not a giant
