Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:21AM (#50240247)
To me it often if feels like South American countries themselves are stuck in an eternal pendulum of electing corrupt left-wing populists after corrupt right-wing populists and swinging back again.
No, you aren't the only one, however I know from my uncle who used to do this that it will most likely mean back-breaking work or paid measly (sometimes both), hardly enough to feed a family. But it's a funny image of usually quiet forests now crawling with former software devs looking for a new purpose.
Re:Ask HN: Who is using MCP in production? on Thursday September 03, 2026 @03:13PM (#49555171)
>Linear's MCP is also very clean and well designed, probably one of their core advantages over, say, Jira.

I was under the impression that Linear's MCP server code isn't public. How do you know that it's well-designed beyond following spec[1][2]?

[1] https://linear.app/docs/mcp [2] https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2026-07-28

The least they could do, after ruthlessly bombarding my employer's servers with requests, ignoring the robots.txt, scraping everything, and incurring significant Google Maps costs for us in the process.

Re:Talking to 35 Strangers at the Gym on Monday May 04, 2026 @09:27AM (#48008483)
I have heard that this is called the Benjamin Franklin effect, and it appears to be an inversion of the principle of reciprocity coined by Robert Cialdini.
Re:Most people can't juggle one ball on Monday April 13, 2026 @04:04AM (#47749151)
Reading this thread makes me wonder if I'm the only one who really tried to learn to juggle, only to fail even after a whole month of brute-forcing it, while my partner at the time, who started at my suggestion, managed it after 30 minutes! That was 15 years ago...
>It doesn't mean they are going to call up the draft.

Are you aware of the concept of "boiling the frog"?

2027: "It's just calling up the draft. It doesn't mean they are going to be sent to the frontline."

I was always curious about how Tay worked technically, since it was build before the Transformers era.

Was it based on a specific scientific paper or research?

The controversy surrounding it seemed to have polluted any search for a technical breakdown or a discussion, or the insights gained from it.

Re:Frequently Asked Unicycling Questions on Tuesday December 02, 2025 @05:30AM (#46119761)
Could you perhaps link a picture of that vehicle?

As searching for "luny cycle" doesn't bring up anything relevant.

However, there this, which looks like an interesting take on the unicycle concept:

Re:Building real software with Gemini 3 Pro on Monday December 01, 2025 @07:22AM (#46106550)
Paywalled article. Seeing that OP almost exclusively submits links to their own paywalled blog, I'm not sure if this doesn't fall under HN's "blogspam" rule.
> there will be large posters reminding the doctors "Could it be sepsis?"

I'm not sure how effective this is. Information presented this way quickly fades into background noise..

Re:The Gaslit Asset Class on Wednesday October 01, 2025 @06:01AM (#45436035)
>Like Kim Peek or Scott Flansburg?

Interesting cases, thanks for sharing. I didn't know what real-life inspiration the movie "Rain Man" came from. However, the two people seem to be worlds apart socially. While Peek seems to be extremely "stunted" in his social development, Flansburg appears to be coping well with his position as a speaker, which I always thought to be rather unusual for people with autism spectrum disorder.

Isn't that basically like ChatGPT's Monday persona? Morose and sarcastic...

What does "D&R" stand for in this context?
Re:Ask HN: How do you learn Spanish guitar? on Tuesday June 24, 2025 @07:24AM (#44364960)
I once had a mystical encounter with a drunk guy on a train who advised me to learn Spanish guitar before turning 30.

However, my path preordained by the universe was interrupted when I watched a professional flamenco tutorial and was put off by the teacher's long fingernails, which are apparently required to play, but which I found absolutely repulsive.

Why do these articles about social “trends” so often seem like poor attempts at social engineering to promote social atomization or hostility between the sexes?
Re:The Chicxulub Asteroid Impact and Mass Extinction on Tuesday June 10, 2025 @06:58AM (#44235233)
Google search (for those who are still using it) comes up with a funny little Easter egg when you search for "Chicxulub asteroid" or "Chicxulub crater".
>what does LNW mean?

"Liquid net worth", I'd assume.

>I thought this article would tell me about things that wealthy people buy that those of us who aren’t as rich would never even think about.

In case you want to look those up, I know for sure that FaceGym masks were popular with the affluent demographic for a while.

How would this affect Go dependencies?
Re:I hacked my clock to control my focus on Monday May 12, 2025 @06:47AM (#43961600)
>It’s about a foot tall. This is also a great way to signal to other people in the office that I’m busy.

Why do I now imagine a queue of colleagues standing restlessly at your desk, waiting for the hourglass to run out?

Re:I hacked my clock to control my focus on Monday May 12, 2025 @03:48AM (#43960557)
I did something similar with a Telegram bot in order to remind myself to look away from the screen, get up and stretch for a bit. However I started to ignore it in favor of "more pressing" tasks and now the chime has become just a faint signal somewhere on the outer edge of my awareness, too easily forgotten about. You need to condition yourself to not ignore it or it will lose its effectiveness.
>put it somewhere safe

What is even "safe" these days? ETFs? Treasury bonds?

Re:Cyborg cicadas play Pachelbel's Canon on Monday May 05, 2025 @08:31AM (#43894378)
This could simply be an alibi to obtain funding or appease an ethics committee (if there is one involved). It's become a meme to label research as a "search and rescue" application to justify working on armed cyberdogs with wall-penetrating radar.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still use Search Engines? on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @06:05AM (#43619978)
Almost all of my “searches” are now done by either ChatGPT or Claude.

I'm still using Google for searches on Reddit these days because Reddit's own search engine is terrible.

Re:Show HN: WhatsApp MCP Server on Monday March 31, 2025 @07:16AM (#43533624)
Personally, I would say that still reeks of being manipulative. I've received messages from a friend which were definitely LLM-generated, it made me like that person considerably less
Re:Underrated Soft Skills: Charisma on Thursday March 20, 2025 @06:46AM (#43421551)
Would you describe (as a historical example) Adolf Hitler or the current US president as charismatic? If so, does that still support your hypothesis that charisma is genuine interest in the people around you?
