While "rewrite" usually means source deletion, let us hope in material world originals will remain. )
Re:Falkon: A KDE Web Browser on Sunday March 09, 2025 @10:56AM (#43309550)
Can't install it due to outdated glibc now. How's the download manager today? Can it at least pause and resume (+from different source)?

if only just desktop... :_(
Re:Falkon: A KDE Web Browser on Sunday March 09, 2025 @10:47AM (#43309448)
wxWidgets might be of help. As long as they polish the wxQt back-end.
Re:Falkon: A KDE Web Browser on Sunday March 09, 2025 @10:37AM (#43309359)
Firefox is GTK-based. With all its UI garbage like disappearing menus, CANCEL-OK dialogs (normal for Mac users), disrespect for system themes/styles/fonts, etc.

I also started using Falkon, but it still lacks too much for me, unfortuantely. And I wish it could import all history too. (

So, what's next? Declare having "sudo" or "runas" a vulnerability?

Oh, wait, it's been already do... NO CARRIER

Someone's just living off the hype again. Scaring the uneducated masses and hurting the reverse-engineer community.
I might get a job at Kremlin as I can't stop laughing MAO for some reason. :_D

Some more:

Usually it's the sponsor who decides. Because, for example, it's pointless to show Walmart ads in North Korea. (I'm not a mz insider)
Re:Self-Hosting a Firefox Sync Server on Saturday March 01, 2025 @06:42AM (#43218337)
Librewolf, Falkon, somthing-chrome-derived (I forgot)
Re:Self-Hosting a Firefox Sync Server on Saturday March 01, 2025 @06:39AM (#43218323)
Closed article after "docker".

Oh god... It's still seems faster to hand-merge bookmarks from all of my browsers and devices together.

Lol. I've had dreadful feelings reading through comments - is windows explorer THAT BAD now? I'm still on 7 in native UI mode and blissfully unaware of terror MS have unleashed onto the world. And waiting for linux to become useful to switch.
I still use and can recommend Sequoia (or SequoiaView?) program from early 2000s to map all directories by size. VERY useful to know what to clean.

As for exlorer... The only drawback to your request is, obviously, the need for recursive FS scan, which is expensive. That is why it is not in-built in default file explorer functionality. But XnView, for example, optionally shows brief content of directories (e.g. 4 mini-thumbs over a directory icon).

Re:Rethinking the C Time API on Monday February 17, 2025 @07:17AM (#43078119)
Indeed, when I wrote a C utility and just wanted to output its start, finish and run time, I spent MORE TIME THAN IT TOOK TO WRITE THE WHOLE PROGRAM to figure out how the whole date/time garbage works! This was a painful, maddening experience. As if this entire API was designed to drive you mad.

But I still love C anyway.

:_( What key should I press to pay respect? I think it might get jammed though...
Re:Uchū · the color scheme for internet lovers on Monday February 17, 2025 @04:29AM (#43076911)
Now, don't be an dick and do it in RGB so other 90% population can see it.

Please.

Same on FF 50 on Linux.

I don't know how to call people who ignore backwards-compatibility. My sites work on IE6 if needed.

There are plenty of them today. Though agency-organized trip is times more expensive.
Is this a suitable place to import my yet unfinished looping SWFs?
Re:Show HN: Cs16.css – CSS library based on CS 1.6 UI on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @09:42AM (#42852838)
Yes! And all of that just to parse some <font> and <img> tags? :D

Also, to be fair: it was VGUI2, which, AFAIK, was introduced with Steam UI and still used in HL2. And was never made available to modders of GS.

Re:The past, present, and future of UI at GitHub on Tuesday January 28, 2025 @09:35AM (#42852767)
> But our HTML, CSS, and JavaScript runs on several major versions of each major browser

How freaking bold this mofo is! I stopped using GitSht because after being bought by MS it went downhill progressively rendering every crucial feature unusable! Like on purpose, simplest things like buttons and menus went more and more broken. Month by month SOMETHING new went wrong. How f* sinister can devs be to enjoy torturing users so much? Oh, right: this is a corporate policy.

I have 3 browsers that are possible to run on my system and NONE of them fully works with GitHub. When even on PaleMoon issue comments started glitching I gave up on GH. F*k it. I'd rather run my own.

Re:Show HN: Cs16.css – CSS library based on CS 1.6 UI on Friday January 24, 2025 @01:45PM (#42815929)
Can't agree more!

But, to be fair, I still use win7 in native (unthemed) UI mode and haven't played many modern games to have a proper comparison :D

Re:Show HN: Cs16.css – CSS library based on CS 1.6 UI on Friday January 24, 2025 @01:43PM (#42815912)
They also added, like, 80MB DLL (AFAIR, chromium) just to render HTML MOTD at some point.

I personally had to rewrite most of mod's VGUI code to make it less leaky and more usable, and not once have I thought of using CSS instead of those INI-style theme configs. But CSS is too complicated to parse (and no one will use that anyway). :(

Re:Show HN: Cs16.css – CSS library based on CS 1.6 UI on Friday January 24, 2025 @12:36PM (#42815438)
Good job! But it reminds me of the dreaded VGUI.dll. (0_0) For those who wrote code for the GS engine it's probaby one of the worst experiences.
Wow! What a titanic task you've managed there! It's a pity that not even factory-stamped discs are safe from corrosion. I hope you share your stuff via torrents too.

Heh, while I wasn't a movie BD enthusiast, I'm well into data backup solutions for home. Even considered buying an LTO drive once. But backing up to 100GB discs is pretty much doable, valid solution. Except for clustering (dividing files/dirs between discs) and updates (which are only possible on BD-REs, but very time-consuming).

I also discovered DVD-RAMs recently, and not only are they darn beautiful, but very versatile and claimed to be more reliable than usual DVDs (nothing beats M-DVDs though). Good for storing project sources.

DVDs were not that far from VHS, everyone could plug DVD player into any TV and enjoy it. But BD came with HD - new resolution and even aspect ratio required ridiculous amount of investments into new hardware. You'd have to buy:

- new TV

- new BD player

- new discs with probably mostly the same movies at the beginning

Plus:

- HD had lots of weird and obscure formats and ridiculous confusing naming like HD/Full HD/Progressive HD/your mom's HD

- no affordable computer drives at first

- new DRM protection

- and many PC owners didn't even have HD-compatible (e.g. 1280x) displays! Let alone 1920x+.

- by the time BD-RW.. I mean BD-RE drives became afordable, flash drives overwhelmed the market.

So, adopting BDs was generally more challenging than it was CDs or DVDs. Next, they were a bit too late for "just storage media" use case. And finally, by the time people started caring about their personal cold data storage, BD production started shrinking.

This made my sad day even sadder. Much, much so.

During past year I was preparing to fully embrace Blu-ray for cold storage. Even bought a USB3.0 controller to shove into my NAS (that silently failed to recognize it) to use with external BD writer.

Only few of discs I bought are made by Sony, but I was planning to expand that collection.

The barrier of entry into BD enthusiast territory is already quite high: you have to read dozens of forum posts worth hundreds of pages to gain somewhat reliable knowledge befor buying something reliable - drives, discs, controllers, software. But now it's one less source for blanks of acceptable quality. No doubt it will lead to rise of already high prices of BD media.

I sincerely think BDs could be way more popular if people were more educated in data storage. Most individuals and businesses have data that they would want to store and protect long-term. But, for example, I knew someone who bought regular cheap USB flash pen-drives for backup of valuable photos and stored them in a drawer. Others, more advanced failures include cheap CD-Rs, old HDDs (literally: some guys are like "my laptop HDD is too old, slow and small, I think I'll copy my most valuable information there and throw it on a shelf") and cursed cloud services. If only more people realized how fragile most data storage solutions are!

AFAIR, 112 is defined by some ITU or 3GPP standard, which is honored in at least Europe/Russia region. In other places different numbers might as well be routed to it or (even better) redefined inside terminal software (SIM). But I no longer work in that area, so can't be 100% sure.
