The funny thing is this was supposed to be the mission of OpenAI.

on Monday October 19, 2026 @03:07PM (#50156585)
This is the state that founders and decision makers are usually in at a startup. Sure, sometimes you have the coder founder who wrote the first iteration of the product, but many times the founders have no clue how the product works under the hood. They entrust that to the engineers. That was then. Now, much of that engineering layer has been removed, so the founder just needs a smaller team of people who understand how to structure the software and interact with the LLM. LLMs do the rest.
The problem here is that you're trying to do a job that is already being done for you. Maybe you don't yet trust it to do a good job, but that is quickly changing.
Re:AI companies are coming for the plumbers
on Monday October 19, 2026 @02:58PM (#50156453)
Of course they don't think it will work. Just like most AI startups, the end goal is investor money. All they have to do is make some wealthy people believe that they'll capture the $19B HVAC repair and $210B plumbing market and they're set. Like Elon with the flying car, it's another grift.

A decade ago, they were the name that popped up any time you would ask for registrar recommendations. Problems were relatively few. The real problems started in September of 2025 when the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners purchased a majority stake. Big surprise, they quickly went to shit. Not sure what CVC's plan was to make a return on their $1.5 billion investment, but it can't be working out well for them.
Re:Theranos-Style Fraud Has Become the Norm
on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:31PM (#50142559)
Fraud is rampant before major economic crashes. Same thing happened in the 1920s. Charles Ponzi, the Florida real estate schemes, Goldman Sachs leveraged investment trusts. There was even what might be the first tech bubble pump and dump with RCA (a radio company). A bunch of investors bought up shares and then went to work hyping it to the public so they would buy in. The investors then dumped it and left everyone else holding the bag. Sound familiar?

This thread is insane. I'm seeing people actually acting like the world's biggest conman is going to deliver a car with thrusters on it. They have given it 2800 comments worth of attention and counting. It is the most commented thread on HN in a year, and I only went back a year in my search. No, it's not lost on me that I just increased that count by one.
My guys. Talking about how it's going to work and the merits of cold gas thrusters on cars is moot. I assure you that you will never, ever see one of these sold to the public or on the road.

Yes it's better. If they're weapons, it's the difference between a gun that a human can use to shoot someone and a gun that goes around shooting people on its own.
And of course we've created digital weapons. We've had them for decades. Where do you think the term "cyberwarfare" came from?

How do you know they weren't simply prompted to do this, or at least prompted in a way that would inevitably lead to this? As far as I know, the prompts that triggered these attacks have not been disclosed.

I don't think so. I think these guys have full-on AI psychosis because of their proximity to it and want the model to eventually have rights as a sentient intelligence.

The distance between an idea and the manifestation of said idea is now nearly zero. That goes for both the good and bad varieties. That’s pretty cool, but also pretty terrible.

Re:Anthropic reported diary entry to police, woman faces felony charge
on Monday October 05, 2026 @06:51PM (#49971886)
Tech companies have always done this. Don’t misread that as blanket support for it, but consider Anthropic’s position here. Do they want a headline to come out that says “woman used Claude to plan murder” or “Anthropic reported potentially dangerous person to the police”? AI being dangerous is already a hot topic, and this seems like a sensible move to me. If you want a guarantee of privacy, you’ll need to run your own models locally.

When a gambling addict spends money on a bet, they're actually spending that money on a moment of hope. After the bet is placed but before the cards fall, they can live in a place where there is at least a possibility that they can make enough money to escape their problems. That moment of possibility is experienced as hope, and it's a feeling that's truly addictive to the hopeless.
It's scary like all addiction, but particularly sad at its core.

Re:The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly

If human intelligence stops being the trait that propels one up the socioeconomic ladder, it will not be good looks that takes its place. The ability to project physical force will become currency. This is why AI could cause civilized societies to completely unwind.

Re:A Model for Winning Survivor
on Sunday September 20, 2026 @12:36PM (#49777423)
Interesting, but it misses a lot in not factoring social dynamics (which the author admits). IMO the greatest Survivor player of all time was JT Thomas in Season 18. The guy was a down-to-earth cattle rancher from Alabama, and he was so good because his personality did all the work. He had that rare perfect combination of traits that you see in true born leaders, and was so loved by the group that no one ever cast a vote against him, not even once. It’s almost like they subconsciously let him win because they believed he deserved it more than they did.

Altman owns significant personal stakes in core technology, chip, and energy infrastructure sectors. His job is to hype AI so that the companies that supply the infrastructure behind it increase in value. When OAI becomes insolvent because their business model doesn't work, he can jump ship with no losses or liabilities.
