The legal implications of having a private version of a website backed up on your own disk for personal use? I'd say none whatsoever
Are there no "dumb" TVs left? Surely you can still buy a television that has no option to connect to the internet/doesn't have built-in apps/is just simply a display? I haven't shopped for a TV in a while, I figured they're still out there though
There's people who use it as a tool, and there's people who use it as a brain surrogate. Most of the people using it as the latter aren't people who were deep thinkers to begin with.
AI atrophies the brain if you use it to replace your brain. There's definitely ways to it thoughtfully instead of just having it think for you.
Some people have spent so much time min/maxing their lives that they forget most people don't treat every facet of their existence as something to optimize.
People won't learn because there will be no financial imperative? If money is the only reason you ever do anything, you're already missing the point of life.
Ha! I've been doing that with my agents ever since the first day I tried agentic coding.
Or a really lovely way to bring up something Patrick Stewart was deeply passionate about.
I feel like I do this anytime I get really into chess, and some other skills. Spend a lot of time mentally practicing it. I don't think it ever actually improves the skill, but it might reinforce what I already know. It can't be a very strong boost though, because I'm still shite at chess.
I did enjoy the story, but doesn't it kind of feel like all the characters talk in the exact same voice? And not... idk, how people talk? It wasn't enough to take me out of it, but it makes me wonder if the story warning about an AI takeover was written by an AI.
That may be, but it still hurts readability. It also immediately stuck out to me
I'm not proud of how much of a chuckle this gave me
You're right, I feel silly even suggesting there might be the slightest tomfoolery here.
My deepest apologies to the author.
"In Windows, folders are an even more extreme measure of emptiness: they take up no disk space at all. For proof, create 352,449 folders and get properties on it."
I'm guessing this is a joke and I'm just taking it too seriously, but the only thing that "proves" is that Windows lies to you lol. It's obviously information that's stored _somewhere_.
Damn, haven't thought about Kitten Cannon in at least over a decade. That sure brings back memories, the internet used to be a very different place.
If it's more visible how pervasive it is to your average person who might not think very much about it, there might be louder demand for it to change. Or everybody will just begrudgingly accept it because they don't want to give up their TikTok, who knows, but I still think it should be more transparent. And maybe if a company has to attach "Disclaimer: this ad is provided by gross violations of your privacy" to their ads like the health warnings on a pack of cigarettes when they choose to advertise that way, they'll choose to not do it that way.
I'm sure there's some flaw in my logic here but I'm not the only one who thinks something's got to change.
It's a great idea too because it would force the companies to disclose the downright creepy extent of the data they've collected on you.
"We're showing you ads for diapers because we find it highly likely that you are pregnant. Oh, you didn't know that?"
Canada, in manufacturing. That's interesting though, I didn't know that
This is a real possibility, if I think about the average age of many of them.
Yes. On a near-constant basis. Before the change it was the first thing many of them would install on newly-issued laptops.
Do I work in the twilight zone or something? The company I work for is trying to phase out Firefox, and I'm getting multiple complaints a week from non-technical users that they can't open Firefox anymore and they don't want to use any other browser.
I don't understand how something like this could take so long to be discovered. Pretty crazy stuff.
According to a HN post, and basically nothing else that I can seem to find.
Who knows, maybe he's still alive and posted the death notice himself. Dude is/was a compulsive liar. There's still to this day no actual evidence that he genuinely has passed away (unless I'm just unable to find it)
Oh crap, if these are the new LLM tells then a lot of people are going to start accusing me of AI writing...
I have a strong tendency of talking about concepts like they're physical objects. A lot of the people I know IRL do too, so it might be a regional thing idk.
That would be dishonest - it's not his work.
I think it's the different between a psychologist saying "examine your thoughts", and the psychologist saying "examine your thoughts, and please reach x conclusion"
There's no evidence he ever worked for Apple beyond his own word, and he sure did tell a lot of tall tales.
Are you suggesting AI companies should intentionally make the visual representations of their products look overtly terrifying?
And also, if they should look like what they are, what exactly does an AI agent that follows you around in all your devices _look like_? Surely they have to take some creative liberties, and it's hard to blame them for wanting something that looks appealing and friendly.
Would you be satisfied if they made it a floating skull with glowing red eyes that periodically screams vague threats at you?
