They may have known they were dealing with Ebola, but they didn't have the equipment or facilities to take all the steps necessary to prevent transmission.

I see Google's censorship as an attack on "freedoms and rights".

> HNers to fall into knee-jerk behavioral patterns of vociferously defending all that is Google

I personally hate Google, and avoid their products whenever possible. I've used Bing for a number of years, and recently switched most of my searching to DuckDuckGo.

I don't think this is an "important victory", but rather an attack on the freedom of information.

P.S. I live in Australia and New Zealand.

Agree 100% with this. I think WP finds a good middle ground between the iOS and Android experience.

WP8.1 is so far ahead of 7.8. Don't write WP off just yet.

"the Nokia X smartphone achieving top-selling status in Pakistan , Russia , Kenya and Nigeria,3 while earning the third-best-selling smartphone spot in India ," said Timo Toikkanen , head of Mobile Phones, Microsoft Devices Group.

This phone is not aimed at people who a power users. This phone is aimed at emerging economies where people are buying their first smartphones. Nokia X has all the basics (music, free messaging, email, Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp), all running on some reasonable hardware.

You can search "Bill Gate's house" on Bing Maps and it finds it.

Darkcoin is not closed source, but the mechanism for anonymous transactions (Darksend) is. Once it is completed it will be open sourced.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't come here that often, and this is probably the third one I've seen.
That means there's like a weeks worth of recoverable oil in that field.
Just PR, no real substance.
Re:Hello, Stranger on Sunday April 27, 2014 @02:12AM (#7654165)
I recently moved from Christchurch, New Zealand to Melbourne Australia. Christchurch has a population of about 350,000 and the only form of public transport is busses (which I have almost never needed to take). Melbourne has a population of about 4,500,000 with trams, busses and trains.

On week days my commute involves a half hour train ride and a 5 minute bus trip either way. While most people are glued to their phones, I purposely avoid using mine as much as possible. I just try to be as friendly as possible.

Re:Today was the last day of Nokia as we knew it on Friday April 25, 2014 @08:58AM (#7646097)
It was about 8 months. Deal with Microsoft was announced in February 2011 and Lumia 800 (I have one) and 710 were announced in October.

I still think it's a mistake for Microsoft to not buy the Nokia brand. Why not go the Motorola route (Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions)?

> Given the MS culture, are things going to get slow and bureaucratic?

This is my worry. Nokia moves so quick on everything, and delivers great products. While Microsoft is always slow, and the the products are always missing features.

Hopefully all those Nokia employees will have an effect on Microsoft's culture.

Microsoft makes products I like. Nokia make products I love.

Australia is pretty good. The government could be a little smaller, but it's not too bad. Melbourne and Sydney have a pretty good tech scene.

The weather is different from Russia.

I don't think it would meet the no wars criteria (probably the police state one too).

Re:Which Cities Sleep in, and Which Get to Work Early on Wednesday April 23, 2014 @07:30AM (#7633278)
I recently moved to Melbourne from Christchurch, NZ. I've been living pretty close to the freeway to the CBD, and it surprises me how early in the morning traffic starts building. Two days a weeks I have to be up by 6:30, and by that time there are already traffic jams.

I wonder whether because of the warmer climate, people don't have such a problem with getting up early. In a Christchurch winter (I'm sure it's the same in most of Canada) it will certainly be below 0°C at 6:30. The record low for Melbourne city is only -2.8°C, versus -7.1°C for Christchurch.

The problem is that if you make the album public anybody could add anything. For example I just added a new picture to you Paris album (of Paris), but could have just of easily added something pornographic.

Yes you can delete it, but unless you monitor it 24/7 it will stay up until you delete it. Two solutions:

1. Have all photos submitted from people other then the owner go to a holding folder for approval by the owner, before they are published to the main folder. 2. A really good filter that will filter out pornographic images (you may or may not allow this to be turned off).

I seems you have identified a problem that is not unique to your employer, and have a solution to it. Unless some clause in your contract specifically prohibits you working on this in your own time I don't see a problem.
Re:SpaceX CRS-3 Mission on Saturday April 19, 2014 @08:40AM (#7613283)
The Space Shuttle was only partially recoverable. There were three main parts to the system.

1. The shuttle itself - this needed extensive maintenance work done to it after each flight.

2. The big orange fuel tank - this couldn't be reused

3. The solid rocket boosters on either side - these had to be completely rebuilt after they splashed down in the ocean (it is easier to splash them down in the ocean than the Falcon 9 first stage, as they separate at a lover altitude).

Overall this didn't save much on costs, with the average cost of a flight (inclusive of development costs) being about US$1.5 billion.
