News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Havoc

In short sound logical argument absolutely zero sense of optics or relatability
Can certainly be framed that way. And the second the returns wobble it will be.

That‘s hn for you. Bubble of engineers smart everyone else stupid & overhead
Re:Revolut moves to self-hosted GLM on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @06:12AM (#50350531)

On both frontiers and open. And lately the gap has been closing so if anything yeeting Anthropic etc is getting more viable over time

Re:European RISC-V Industrial Computing Initiative on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @03:54AM (#50349631)
Neat. This seems like exactly the sort of thing Europe should be pushing
Re:Can't fish Ethernet? Use "invisible" fiber instead on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:29PM (#50346330)
This also comes in translucent type - basically looks like fishing line so very close to actually invisible. When it's against a wall you can't see it unless you've got a flashlight and are centimeters away.

And it'll carry 10gig just fine.

Good stuff even though it's a bit of a pain to route it along a path that makes sense, has the right bend radius & doesn't get squished by doors etc.

Currently trying to decide whether to do the same for other rooms.

Isn't oracle already quite top heavy on debt?
Re:Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:46PM (#50344286)
Not so long ago everyone was amazed that they could read BASE64.

This is giving singularity is near vibes.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:29PM (#50344059)
Congrats on your inferior TV viewing experience. Hopefully the viewing angle still works despite the high horse perspective...
Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:31PM (#50341336)
Unfortunately those are also a step behind cutting edge.

I’d rather buy a smart TV, never connect it to the internet than trade down on specs

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Monday November 02, 2026 @01:06PM (#50340928)
2026 TCL I just bought seems to work fine without internet
Re:Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes on Sunday November 01, 2026 @09:13AM (#50325895)
The most shitest shithouse is clearly white and has a orange gremlin in it
The fact that you point to the latest model as „I’d be fine with that“ proves my point.

If expectations were static you’d be fine with qwen 2.5…but nobody sane says that today.

It’s a moving target thus we need open weights to move

>everything tagged as 'uncensored' or 'abliterated' will get wiped from huggingface at some point in the future.

Unlikely given how trivial it is to DIY this (I think...haven't myself but from afar it seems within avg hn crowd reach)

>The nice thing is that current local modes don't go away.

Given pace of advance I'm not convinced this is a winning strategy. The models of today (open or not) are way smarter than those of a year ago.

...so we really do need open models to keep pace, not just be statically competitive at a given point in time

The bonsai quants are not that awesome. Yeah they're fast and they retain the "27B" but in practice the perform similarly

5GB of bonsai weights end up being similar to 5GB of QAT weights even when one is derived from a 27B and the other from an 8B

> poem confirmed success:

What a load of horseshit. A model running on a ESP32 running off a questionable powerbank supply with dodgy coding and worse storage reliability can do that.

The only thing anyone cares about is whether the (economic)math works on put AI in space.

This feels like Cisco paid for the article
Re:GPT-5.6 Sol can beat Factorio on peaceful mode on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:46PM (#50320564)
I bet it helps that Factorio attracts exactly the kind of obsessive players that'll leave a digital trail of training data documented in precise detail

Bit like warthunder guys can't help but leak classified info

This is why we need open AI (not OpenAI). Some duopoly deciding what goes on a whim is not acceptable

I can sorta see them suppressing instructions for say bioweapons (that seems fair to me), but this demonstrates that they'll bend for corporate interests.

Re:I'm a Proton employee and I'm breaking my silence on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:52PM (#50320094)
>some of the criticism hurts me because it described a company I don't recognize

Haven't really done much research, but this resonates - the vibes on these recent news reports felt very off.

It felt engineered frankly, which makes me quite suspicious in a world where everyone seems to be pushing for encryption backdoors. The one email provider famous for strong encryption suddenly gets a broad PR across entire media landscape?

...zero evidence but the whole thing just feels off AF

Yeah I sorta get it, but like idk put something like "End child hunger" on it or something...
How uncreative.

Nothing against porn, but given a platform that's what you pick to blast into the world?

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:24PM (#50297061)
wow. Naive perhaps but I would have thought that binance and coinbase would have insurance funds equal to the exposure of their hot wallets.

idk to me that just seems intuitively like something you'd need to have to be credible? Cold is a different story...but how can hot not be covered?

Re:We're releasing the weights of Mistral Large 4 on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:53PM (#50294837)
I'll never not cheer for Mistral.

The more countries are in this game the better for us all.

Much like other stuff when there isn't enough competition the consumer gets wrecked

Fair point. Not entirely convinced a modern car plant could be retrofitted for tanks/military but I guess even 4x4s have value
Meanwhile my paid enterprise plan has Gemini 3.1 pro in chat.

Thats on a 22 bucks plan.

idk wtf Google is doing with their plans but really need to make an effort to put some distance between myself and that circus

I do wonder what the US game plan is here long term. This sort of protectionism can work temporarily but isn’t really sustainable.

And it’s not like GM and friends are catching up. If anything the gap is widening rapidly.

The picture has a pilot included - suggests this is a pretty small plane with very stubby wing.
Re:Regent's Ground-Effect Vehicle Reimagines Coastal Travel on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @02:28PM (#50278628)
10m seems quite high for ground effect?
