Re:Ask HN: Have you ever switched cloud? on Thursday April 07, 2022 @07:54AM (#30943276)
I have. I was working for a company that had its own data centers, but we were running out of space and time to add more. We were already using Rackspace as a managed hosting provider (we didn't want to manage our own infrastructure), so we decided to move from our data center to Rackspace's data center.

The difference in terms of services was negligible, because they all offered almost identical services. But we did it because:

* We were looking for someone to manage the hardware and infrastructure for us.

* Rackspace's managed hardware offered higher availability than what we were able to achieve on our own.

* We had a relationship with Rackspace and they understood our needs, so we felt comfortable switching over entirely.

According to consistent research, remote workers work more hours than their office-bound counterparts. Working at home is clearly more productive than working in an office, according to studies.

The STACKIT cloud is still in the BETA phase, but the cloud service should be available soon.
Re:Flower – A Friendly Federated Learning Framework on Tuesday March 29, 2022 @09:27AM (#30842256)
FL has emerged as a promising technique for edge devices to collaboratively learn a shared prediction model while keeping their training data on the device, thereby decoupling machine learning from the need to store the data in the cloud. However, FL is difficult to realistically implement due to scale and system heterogeneity. Although there are several research frameworks for simulating FL algorithms, none of them support the study of scalable FL workloads on heterogeneous edge devices.

Re:Happiness and the Art of Being (2012) on Thursday March 24, 2022 @09:15AM (#30789291)
Our true nature, our essential being, is happiness. The transient happiness that we appear to derive from external experiences arises only from within ourselves, and is felt as a result of the temporary calming of our mind that occurs whenever any of our desires are fulfilled.

Re:Welcome to Metaversity on Tuesday March 15, 2022 @11:18PM (#30694973)
It's critical to understand that the Metaverse isn't a game, a piece of hardware, or an online experience. This is equivalent to claiming that World of Warcraft, the iPhone, or Google is the Internet. They are digital worlds, devices, services, and websites, among other things. The Internet is a vast network of protocols, technology, tubes, and languages, as well as access devices and content and communication experiences built on top of them. Metaverse will be as well.

Despite the fact that Netflix is an entertainment company, it has lagged far behind many of the world's leading technology companies in terms of technological innovation. Netflix has had a significant impact on the technology world over the years with its single video-streaming application, world-class engineering efforts, culture, and product development.

DevOps is one such practise that Netflix exemplifies admirably. Their DevOps culture has allowed them to innovate more quickly, which has resulted in numerous business benefits. It also assisted them in achieving near-perfect uptime, delivering new features to users more quickly, and increasing their subscribers and streaming hours.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
Twitter is implementing a change that will make it more difficult to view your timeline feed.

Twitter began rolling out its algorithmic timeline in 2016 (to much fanfare), and in 2018 introduced the spark icon, which allows you to switch between algorithmic and reverse timeline feeds. To me, the spark seemed like a reasonable way to coexist with the Home and Latest timelines, but with the change announced on Thursday, Twitter appears to be pushing users towards the algorithmic feed. Instagram, on the other hand, is experimenting with reporting the chronological flow of its users.

Re:Why Japanese Web Design Is So Different (2013) on Wednesday March 02, 2022 @10:45PM (#30536905)
Densely packed text, a busy layout, tiny low-resolution images, cute characters, and the use of flash animation are some of the distinguishing features of a Japanese web page. These features that distinguish Japanese websites are due to a variety of factors that are linguistic, cultural, and technical in nature.
Google has joined a growing number of technology and financial firms in requiring employees to return to work. While some large employers have made voluntary work-from-home policies permanent, others, such as Google, believe that it is best to prioritise in-person interactions among colleagues.

I personally believe working from office brings more productivity than working from home.
