Re:MySQL InnoDB Cluster GA on Wednesday April 12, 2017 @10:47PM (#14103726)
I have been introduced to this from my local MySQL team. Just want to confirm, how is the conflict resolution solved? e.g., two different updates on two different server at about the same time.
I don't like to bargain.
Re:Compute Card, a Credit Card-Sized Compute Platform on Thursday January 05, 2017 @11:08PM (#13333854)
I do wish that something like this (and the compute stick) will become mainstream. My company has multiple office location and I need to commute to work. Bringing a 5-kg+ of load everyday (laptop, charger, etc) is sure hurting my back.

With this, I can just bring a card or a stick, and plug it in on my company card/stick reader and start working.

I cannot imagine a scenario of how this will be used. Any specific needs that Google tries to cover?

I like their converter widget.

Re:Amazon Web Services in Plain English on Friday September 11, 2015 @07:36AM (#10203088)
AWS is quite okay, I think, and useful. They even named their free training day as AWSome Day.
Nice. It's quite effective and fun to learn people's names.
Re:The Umbrella Reinvented on Monday June 22, 2015 @03:42AM (#9756784)
My problem with the umbrella is that it is symmetric. If I hold it with my left hand, my right part becomes exposed, and vice versa. If I try to protect my backpack from getting wet, my front side get wet.
Re:Daum Kakao Will Acquire the Path and Path Talk Apps on Friday May 29, 2015 @12:04AM (#9622595)
From this acquisition, I just hope that Path won't turn into Kakao/LINE-like application, where they offer useless stickers, and try to look 'cute'.
Re:Why PowerPoint should be banned on Tuesday May 26, 2015 @11:00PM (#9609080)
> In my opinion, people are just poorly educated (or not educated) in presentation making. Or to phase it another way, a school may teach them to use PP the software but doesn't teach them how to put on a good presentation using it.

I agree. You cannot make the tool as an excuse of not giving a good presentation. PP is there to help you do things, like any other tools. You need to know how to use it properly and wisely.

I think, the widespread use of PP is because of its capability to present ideas concisely, especially to the management level where they won't spend their time reading a long document. This is especially prominent in the area of Strategy Consulting, where they can just arrange picture and text to be presented to the board of directors.

They should test for hopelessness. If you put yourself in a simulation, you know that you will get out of it eventually. That gives hope and motivates you to keep going. In real-life scenario, you might be on Mars without possibility of going back.
Re:Eating Too Much Rice Almost Sank the Japanese Navy in 1882 on Thursday April 16, 2015 @11:51PM (#9392166)
Anyone has a source for the comparison between white rice and barley vitamin B1 content? I'm just wondering of how great the difference is that it can help the B1 deficiency.
Re:What Happens When Apple Buys a Company You Depend On on Thursday March 26, 2015 @11:11PM (#9274555)
Despite the fact that this is not only happen in Apple specific case as the title suggest and probably, a quite generalization of what Apple do to the company it bought, the article raises a good point to carefully decide what technology solution you use for your company.

We have to expect that any product that we used might come to an end someday, and need to make sure that we at least have an escape plan for that.

Re:How to Survive in SF as a Broke Startup on Thursday November 06, 2014 @05:26AM (#8566458)
You might as well open a small restaurant. It looks like the presentation of your food is attracting enough. Not sure about the taste.
Re:The Limits of Friendship on Wednesday October 08, 2014 @05:46AM (#8426080)
> One concern, though, is that some social skills may not develop as effectively when so many interactions exist online.

Maybe we're just adapting ourselves to the new social environment. We forget what we don't need to survive, and we learn skills in a different form from what is considered as a "normal" in this present time.

Re:How to tell when a robot has written you a letter on Wednesday September 24, 2014 @06:28AM (#8360694)
I think I'll just rip open the letter rather than analyzing the writing. Too many details to look at.
Re:What We See When We Read on Monday August 25, 2014 @02:07AM (#8220759)
Whenever I try to imagine how a character looks like, I will eventually forget about it and make a new one at the next reading. So, I try to map the character to the person I know, which become a problem when the character grows older.

From a writer's point of view, maybe it is fun to put a lot of details about the world they are trying to describe in a very detailed way.

"If Epic and its Unreal engine on console don't have a threaded graphics pipeline--which to date they don't"

I'm surprised to know that this thing is happening. I thought everyone has optimized their program to go multi-threading.
