I'd love someone to do a split ortholinear keyboard on a laptop. That'd probably push it to instant buy for me almost regardless of the rest of the specs etc.
Re:Tech Layoffs Are Feeding a New Startup Surge on Saturday February 25, 2023 @03:13PM (#34939993)
We've had some success with recording meetings and using automated transcriptions, though we don't have any fresh out of college juniors now.
We use 1Password, which supports one time password generation, and you can use shared vaults to share credentials.

Ooh you are going to be so mad when you find out people use to talk about so something other than the purple vegetable...
Re:Helios, HashiCorp’s New Design System on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @10:41PM (#34606059)
A fair number of the hashicorp tools use ember already, including Nomad, Vault and Boundary. I think Boundary is newer, so they're likely still using it for new projects, though both Consul and Waypoint aren't using it based on the repos.
We use Nomad at $JOB and it's been great. We're a small startup with one senior site reliability engineer doing pretty much all the infra work and I (~CTO) chip in when I can be useful, though when we adopted Nomad it was just me working on infra.

I looked into Kubernetes (I haven't worked with it at all before) and there just seemed so much complexity to handle things I didn't need that it was too much to learn for the benefit. Once I found Nomad it was a lot simpler, but it has everything we need and that's stayed true as we've grown.

I'd definitely strongly recommend it if you're wanting an orchestration system and don't need the complexity Kubernetes brings.

So put that in the resume. Say how you delivered it better, faster or cheaper than the next candidate in the pile would have.

Re:Sudo Replacement on Saturday January 21, 2023 @05:12PM (#34471188)
A bank I used until about 2018 (no idea if they've fixed this yet - I left) had an exactly 6 character password, and when you used telephone banking it just needed the 6 digits that corresponded to that word. Those 6 numbers also worked online, so at best they were turning all passwords into numbers before hashing them, ensuring there are less than 900000 different possible passwords, which was trivially easy to brute force in 2015, nevermind today.

Woah! 74 kids. That's crazy!
Re:Password Requirements: Myths and Madness on Friday December 23, 2022 @08:15AM (#34105417)
I work for an insuretech startup and have been through a number of compliance gauntlets with large enterprise insurance companies. Appealing to NIST recommendations for why we don't auto-expire passwords every x days and don't require anything more complicated than at least 10 characters has worked on every occasion.
Others have given the much better answer, which is to leave and get a better job somewhere else but I saw the company is based in the UK so I wanted to mention the UK deemed employment rules which changed last year. In short, the company may be responsible for paying tax and NI deductions, where's they likely weren't before April 2021 - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fee-payer-responsibilities-under....
Re:I wish my web server were in the corner of my room on Tuesday October 11, 2022 @06:43PM (#33170213)
To solve the redundancy problem I wonder if running something like Hashicorp's Nomad on a few raspberry pis split across some friends houses could work nicely. Each site gets hosted at multiple houses for redundancy but no one person needs multiple devices.

My car is also push start and I have to hold the fob in front of the start button for a short while before turning on the car if the fob battery is out.
Re:iOS Ships Dvorak, Finally on Monday October 10, 2022 @10:33AM (#33151894)
I'm an Android user which has had Dvorak phone keyboards for years and I've used them since I switched to Dvorak on the desktop. I'm sure there's not the same benefit, but I can touch type on my phone pretty well, and I definitely can't do that with qwerty. It's probably just habit, but it's nice to have the option. I'll definitely be switching over my iPad keyboard.
Re:A single Texas ruling could change the web forever on Wednesday September 28, 2022 @11:13PM (#33015894)
I feel like I have to be missing something here. If the law is upheld why wouldn't sites just not allow access to their content in Texas? Stick the same front banner up that alcohol or porn sites have where you have to confirm you're over a certain age but this time it's confirming you're not in Texas, and carry on as normal.
Re:iPhone 14 Pro Camera Review: Scotland on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @11:59PM (#32846835)
I realise this isn't for everyone, but if you're changing sim often enough those sim card proddy tools fit nicely on keyrings. I fly from Canada to the UK roughly once a year to visit family and haven't felt like it's taking up excess space the rest of the year.
Re:GeForce Now: A Review on Thursday August 25, 2022 @08:09AM (#32592610)
All (or at least most, though I didn't notice any missing that aren't super old - it has Morrowind on there) of the Bethesda games are available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It's more expensive but comes with the games so might be worth a look if you particularly like Bethesda's products.
Re:Can the Visa-Mastercard duopoly be broken? on Wednesday August 17, 2022 @11:34PM (#32504966)
Betteridge's law of headlines.
No you're not. A fairy high proportion of the poplulation can afford the small luxury of $10 to take a company laptop to a coffeeshop and buy an overpriced drink. When we're talking about who the police are fighting crime for, rich is the 1-2%.
Match is useful, but for anyone trying to solve the problem of accessing a given machine from different networks check out Tailscale. It's one of the closest things to magic that I've found in recent years and just works. I used to have a dynamic DNS thing set up, and all kinds of firewall rules to be able to ssh to my home machine when on the road from my laptop and now I just ssh [hostname] and it just works, wherever I am.
Re:MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason on Monday August 15, 2022 @07:54PM (#32477335)
I'd love a split, ortholinear, semi-ergonomic keyboard for a laptop but know it'll never happen on a mass-market device. The framework has the best change of making it possible because they couldd just sell that keyboard to those who want it without needing them to sell the rest of the laptop as part of the package. Still not likely to happen, but I can dream...
Re:It costs $110k to fully gear up in Diablo Immortal on Sunday June 05, 2022 @12:39PM (#31632544)
I never got much into mobile gaming, but have recently been having a lot of fun playing PC or console games on my phone (using a controller) with streaming services. I've played with both Geforce Now and Xbox Game Pass and (at home on my decent cable internet connection) it's working really nicely. I also have the Nvidia shield, so when I do want to game on the TV I can pick up where I left off very easily.

If you're looking for a game to play on your commute it's probably not going to work, but for at home on the couch it's great.

Re:Using email wrong on Sunday March 06, 2022 @01:31PM (#30579786)
I'm not the person you replied to but I do use the spam button for any unwanted emails I get. If it's a receipt or a shipping notification then no worries, thanks for letting me know but if you think me signing up for your service or buying something from you is me opting in to your email marketing then you're mistaken and to the spam box you'll go.
Re:Using email wrong on Sunday March 06, 2022 @01:28PM (#30579748)
I've definitely had filters set up based on this in the past. Did they change it in the last few years?
Re:Using email wrong on Sunday March 06, 2022 @01:26PM (#30579735)
What for? Hey where the author got the idea from? The author doesn't use it. Fastmail? The author's method works with any mail service that supports custom domains and email aliases. Seems a stretch to call it an ad when it's not clear what they're promoting.

Another example of this is Dan Abramov's post from 2018 about things he doesn't know - https://overreacted.io/things-i-dont-know-as-of-2018/

As a very well known figure in the React community, the creator of Redux and currently working for Facebook on the React core team, he says people often think he's an expert in everything.

Re:What we lost on Saturday February 12, 2022 @10:12PM (#30318774)
I know I miss out on some things with video meetings instead of in person meetings, but I consider that a small price to pay to live in a more rural community that I love, and where I can afford to buy a house and yet still work with an absolutely kick-ass bunch of humans spread across the US and Canada. Yeah I miss some of the watercooler chat, but I'll lose that to save 90 minutes of commute every day. Sure, it'd be great to just grab the key people I need for something, dive into a meeting room and hash things out on a whiteboard for 30 minutes, but at the weekend I can enjoy spending time in the workshop that I definitely wouldn't have if I lived in the nearest big city where the tech jobs are. Sure, remote means some things are worse. So what? So much else is so much better.
I'm not the person you asked, but I switched from Kindle to Kobo when I realised I could get ebooks from my library on a Kobo. Now pretty much everything I read is from the library and I've not turned on my Kindle in well over a year.
Re:Ask HN: At a peak of my dev career, I hate my life on Sunday January 30, 2022 @03:27PM (#30140778)
When I moved to Toronto I found a local roleplaying group and if possible that crowd has an even bigger set of people lacking certain social skills. Despite that, I met most of my friendship group in Toronto through the people I met at that group.

You don't go to the boardgame group because everyone there will be your ideal friendship candidate. You go to find a few people who you get on well with, then invite them over to your place or to some common ground for boardgames (or other mutually enjoyable activity) outside of the group and without the socially inept.
