Re:So I guess everyone uses LLMs to think now on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:29PM (#50331005)
I still write better code than LLMs. It's just slower, and the quality difference is not usually worth the human effort.
Opposing it because you dislike consumerism makes sense. Opposing it because its date is determined by US Thanksgiving as opposed to Canadian Thanksgiving does not.
For a whole bunch of reasons, it makes sense for sales to be coordinated between different countries, especially neighbors. It allows marketing dollars to be used more efficiently, the logistics of shipping and warehousing are simplified, etc.

Besides, Black Friday is more about kicking off the Christmas buying season than celebrating Thanksgiving. It starts the very day after the preceding major holiday (and when many Americans have the day off). Unless Canadians would be done with their Christmas shopping by now, it would not make sense to tie to Canadian Thanksgiving.

A day about eating candy, wearing fun costumes and watching a popular genre of movies is more popular than a day commemorating a failed terrorist attack in a sectarian conflict? Especially between two religious groups that have shrinking memberships in the population.

Let me shake my hand at the clouds and swear my undying loyalty to how much better than me and innately deserving of rulership a specific family dynasty is.

Making the driver wait in line and refusing to accept that behavior seems like a reasonable recourse.

So, no need for a pretextual stop. You are giving them a real reason to pull you over at any time.

Being in an area is circumstantial.
In the several years it will take to resolve, the one side will get to do what they want and the other will not.
They waited until there was a civil war in Russia to send him back.
Lenin was supported by Germany, but I don't think anyone credible would say he wa controlled by Germany.
That only protects him from non-Senate consequences. He could certainly be ejected from the Senate. Can the Senate try and convict him of breaking national security secrecy laws?
If your friend moves into your guest room and receives mail there, etc. they are not homeless. If they sleep on your couch 5 days a month then circulate among 6 friends doing the same, they are.

Windows95 still had failures of UI design, and those weren't fixed until XP.
Competition in a duopoly looks very different from competition with a large number of suppliers.

I can buy a print of the Mona Lisa at the museum gift shop. Or hire an artist to paint a duplicate that only a few experts with specialized tools can tell apart from the original.

Works of art are still going up in value.

Before the rate limiting, there were physical confrontations around the restock time. Spreading it out prevents them.

It also works better for the stores that host those machines, where they are supposed to draw in customers, if cards are randomly available throughout the day as opposed never available.

Not just universities. Large tech companies have been excellent at funding R&D.
> Lying preserves the legal basis for copyright?

With some amount of AI (zero) the resulting work is copyrighted. With some amount of AI (prompt "create influencer videos") the resulting work is not copyrighted.

Since laws are still in flux, and the line might still move, downplaying the use of AI makes it more likely your copyright will survive.

> many earn way more than $100K, obviously.

Many seems unlikely. Influencer income follows a Pareto distribution so you would expect that most influencers who make more than 100k a year earn close to that.

About 25% of Americans have a Netflix account.

Has Anthropic been taking on debt? I thought they've been primarily selling equity.

Re:Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis on Monday October 12, 2026 @02:19AM (#50052045)
> It's partly because a 20% raise isn't a 20% raise. Even at the most modest tax bracket (above poverty) that will be reduced down to 17%.

That's just not true.

To come up with an example of 17%, I have to plug in numbers that put you above the tax limit for social security, assume that tax brackets weren't modified by inflation (they are supposed to be), and put you right at the cusp before the next large jump tax bracket. So from 197,300 to that plus 20%. And even then, it's more than a 17% raise unless you are in California, where it's a 16% raise.

But that's again a very contrived example. In most cases, it's a full 20% raise.

> A 20% (ignoring taxes) raise when your take home pay is $3000 disappears very quickly into your $6000 credit card debt, or maybe your $700/month car loan, or your $400/month student loans

Except inflation makes loans cheaper. You get a raise. The principle stays the same. If inflation and your salary both go up by 20%, that's mathematically equivalent to a 16% reduction in your debt. So your credit card debt becomes the equivalent of $5,000, etc.

Because they want to move in and can afford it. Same reason that apartment complexes have to add greenspace or subsidized apartments as a condition of getting a zoning variance.
