articles like this sound good until you realize that the grid often interconnects over multiple states. With pipeline infrastructure lacking. My guess is these gas plants are going to be built in states like Pennsylvania close to where gas is being produced. Easier to convert the shale gas into electricity closer to where it is produced.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the JnJ vaccine use the old vaccine technology compared to the newer Mrna vaccines?
Re:Restaurant workers quit at record rate on Wednesday July 21, 2021 @03:00AM (#27903156)
The truth though is that when the generous pandemic stimulus ends, the labor shortage will also end.
Robinhood is expected to go public (IPO) soon. What does everyone think of the company now? I was going to invest but now I'm having second thoughts on it. Seems like the brand has been permanently tarnished by this situation overall.
Re:Modular Homes for Under $50k on Wednesday June 30, 2021 @01:32PM (#27691260)
I live in So cal and this is a super good idea. What many people don't know is that the cities have been big advocates for building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU). These are smaller homes that are basically built in people's backyards. It is seen as a way to increase housing units without doing any significant rezoning of traditional zoning.

I was looking on google maps satellite view and noticed that the vast majority of homes with large backyards do not have an ADU so the potential here for investment is pretty significant I would say.

We are also in a housing crisis and rents are soaring.

This law is simply guised as fighting "hate speech" but in practice it is designed to eliminate political enemies.
My opinion is to abandon these "traditional" parties and go back to the fundamentals of what makes a society free and prosperous. Then vote based on that.
Still happening today. Except we call it cancel culture instead.
This is something that authoritarian regimes do to eliminate their political enemies through color of law. They create vague laws that only get applied to their political enemies.

Really unfortunate to see this is the path Canada has gone.

The conspiracy nuts are crazy, I agree, but they are also opposed to oppression so they are our allies.

Be wary of the "divide and conquer" strategy when it is being used by oppressive regimes and various governments.

True but it is also possible that he was assisnated. People get assisnate all the time for political reasons.
Re:100 Largest Landowners in America on Tuesday May 18, 2021 @05:34PM (#27201518)
Voters shouldn't be able to influence private landowning anyways since it violates private property rights. The whole point of owning land is so you can decide what to do with the land. If you want to decide what to do with someone's private property then work a deal with them instead.
Just another scam like MLM where you get idiots to buy "equipment/inventory" to start their "business". The person doing the pitching is often just a sales man for the company they're saying to buy from.
Re:The Ultimate Guide to Inflation on Sunday May 09, 2021 @07:48PM (#27101014)
Problem with gold is that it is also inflationary only difference is it is mines that "print" more gold instead of a central bank.

Cryptocurrencies are better since they have geometric decay built into the algorithm to make them deflationary by default.

Re:The Ultimate Guide to Inflation on Sunday May 09, 2021 @07:41PM (#27100963)
This is true but it is imperative that citizens have a reliable currency to use to do transactions. This is why I think it is imperative that we transition over to cryptocurrencies that are based on strong fundamentals that make money reliable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it but I would say a bigger problem is that the stimulus is encouraging people to not work which discourages production of goods/services. A lot of the inflation I've experienced it directly from less people providing goods/services so those who are producing have more pricing power and simply raise their prices. I recently got quotes for some construction work and all of these contractors say they're booked out for MONTHS!

We need to start rolling back on all of the stimulus and COVID rules we've implemented to encourage people to return back to work.

Once this happens, I believe production will increase and inflation will dissipate quicker.

Re:Facebook's Trump ban upheld by Oversight Board, for now on Wednesday May 05, 2021 @04:45PM (#27055553)
except these people do go to other places and then people tell ISPs and the such to block those websites...see 8chan.

Look at the controversy over platforms like parler and gab as well.

This is why I think the ultimate solution is to have platforms that are fully encrypted, anonymized (TOR) and decentralized. This is the only way to ensure people can exercise their freedom of speech without harassment. Basic implementations have already been built, bitmessage, for example but that technology needs to be expanded into more of a reddit-like website. Make posters/comments/upvotes burn CPU cycles to participate and pay rewards to the people hosting/mining.

There are non-profit organizations or similar private organizations that are better suited for political activity. The workplace is not the correct place. I was also harassed by the "silence is complicit" attitude. Some other employees I work with would go up to me and ask me questions like "we want to know where you stand on xyz political issue".....and I'm like.....it is really none of your business. They then take that response as you "being part of the problem" and then start going after you personally. Like who the heck does that? Especially to coworkers.
Our work implemented a similar policy as well because politics was being brought up all the time and it was becoming a nuisance and some employees were basically harassing other employees.

I have no problem with people being activists in their private life but when you go to work, you have to work. You can't be an activist while at work and causing a hostile work environment for others.

I agree with the policy and think every company should do the same. Since the policy has been implemented, our work environment has improved significantly.

Maybe figured that coinbase IPO would dominate crypto news for the day and any reporting on this would be drowned out, possibly?
If they want to launder the funds all they have to do is used a decentralized exchange to convert the bitcoin into something like monero. Monero has an encrypted blockchain and a bunch of other anonymization features. So once you convert it to monero, poof, the funds simply disappear into the ether just like that without a trace. They can then convert it back into bitcoin if they want as well.
Re:Coinbase from YC to DPO on Wednesday April 14, 2021 @04:33PM (#26812671)
There is lots of speculation now but I think eventually real-world applications will be made with crypto. At the very least, it will be likely that the bigger cryptos will start to be accepted by major companies to buy goods/services.
haveibeenpwned pulls from multiple data leaks. So it is likely your data was leaked somewhere else and the company that got hacked simply never reported it. Happens all the time. Once your data has been leaked. There is nothing you can do about it. Your information will simply just float out there in the internet ether forever.

This is why it is so important for everyone to go pseudonymous online especially if you are doing ANYTHING that can be remotely viewed as controversial, like political speech. The reality is whether you like it or not, your personal information will be leaked.

I know these days everyone wants to be a social activist on social media today but just don't do it. It is not worth it if some nut job decides to go after you for whatever reason. It is very easy these days to find where people live, work, phone numbers etc by simply knowing their first name, last name and general location of where they live. Most people openly disclose this information.

Identity theft and harassment. If you say anything politically that other people don't agree with then you could become a victim of violence.
Yup. That's why I pretty much deleted all my social media with my real first name, last name etc.

Imagine getting into a facebook argument with someone and that person becomes so emotionally enraged with what you said that they go to your house.

Re:Social media addiction linked to cyberbullying on Tuesday March 30, 2021 @07:17PM (#26641727)
Bingo. This is why I pretty much stopped using facebook and twitter. Total waste of time services.

Since then my productivity has improved and my mental health has improved as well.

Yes they're starving but without a natural predator to them then they will just rebound if kelp grows back.

The article did mention that the starfish predator of the urchin died from a mystery disease. I wonder if that starfish was reintroduced into the area if it would be able to survive again or simply die from the disease again.

I think the key to fixing this issue is to figure out the reason the starfish died of the disease. Then it might be possible to mitigate for that.

Re:Coursera S-1 IPO on Monday March 08, 2021 @04:08AM (#26383617)
Better. Coursera will try to monetize even harder and turn away even more customers.

With edtech the name of the game has always been quality of the curriculum and how innovative your technology is in terms of being able to make learning more successful for the learner. The "interactive coding" in the browser model I think is perfect for learning how to code.

I've looked at coursera and personally I haven't seen anything significant in terms of innovation.

Re:“User engagement” is code for “addiction” on Thursday March 04, 2021 @03:13PM (#26347606)
Social media is a perfect example of where this is used. I know countless people that are literally addicted to it. They want to see every new update continuously and the social media apps are designed to do this through notifications.

I saw this clear as day when I was at jury duty. We were waiting for the court to get back into session. There was a girl sitting next to me on the bench and I noticed about every 5 minutes she would open up her phone and go through her routine. First pull up facebook, scroll through it. Close the app then pull up instragram, scroll through. She did this consistently for the entire 2 hours we were sitting there (the court was delayed). If that isn't addiction, I don't know what is.

Then look at all the mental health problems young people are having these days - bullying, depression, suicide etc. and I would say a big part of that is influenced by social media. People see other people living the "good life" and they get depressed because they can't have the same. Young women see "pretty" women on Instagram and they know they can never compete with that, so their self esteem drops to nothing. Then you have all the bullying that goes on as well. Completely toxic environment.

Social media is the cigarette of our generation.

Re:Gab Has Been Breached on Thursday March 04, 2021 @02:18AM (#26339613)
Ironically enough, I saw someone make a post on another site I read where they were saying in order to exploit cancel culture and doxing, they were working on a bot that would scrape public data from facebook profiles (mainly the name and profile picture) and then have that bot cross create the account on gab and parler. Then the bot would go and repost content from the site and add comments. The idea is that other people would come to the website looking to doxx people or harass people but the reality is the people they would be trying to harass are just fake profiles that the individual person never actually made.

It is kind of interesting to think about because if you go on facebook, you can see lots of people using their real facial picture and real first name, last name and the people doing the doxing/harassments don't really put much thought into how that profile account was created.
