Erm. Without risky behavior there’s no innovation.
Re:Why Does the U.S. Always Run a Trade Deficit? on Tuesday May 20, 2025 @08:20AM (#44040736)

It’s because, comparatively, the EU doesn’t run as massive fiscal deficits, nor is the EUR the primary reserve currency.

Keep in mind that what the fed article is calling a “saving gap” is really more of a fiscal gap that been plugged by US Treasuries.

The US runs a $1T surplus in services.
Re:LLM generated code is like particleboard on Tuesday March 18, 2025 @09:22AM (#43399147)
Exactly!

It’s about the turns.

I didn’t end up as a carpenter early in my career, but I have been FoH staff in a restaurant. Turns, or how fast you can move your tables, was the main driver in income for you and the restaurant.

LLM code is kind of the same, it speeds up how quickly you can turn over the code to adapt to whatever new biz requirements have come down the pike.

I was just amused that a former comptroller of the currency discovered U-6!
Re:Why is printer ink so expensive? on Friday December 06, 2024 @09:59AM (#42340391)
Erm, why on earth does anyone buy inkjet anymore? Seriously just go get one of those cheap and cheerful brother laser printers!
Good god these guys hate the free market.

Hats. The fedoras they wear shades their faces from view, m’lady
No, not really --it means financial engineering became more important than actual engineering for stock valuations.

It’s funny, but the balance board makes it possible for me to stand for quite a while with no trouble. I think it’s because I’m constantly shifting my weight.

The leap is an awesome chair. Plus you can get it sized down if you’re a petite person.
Well, given the extensive use of US Treasuries as collateral, a globe spanning margin call would probably create a collapse of the system.

Hrm, I went to public school in the 1980s and received a fair facsimile of a classical education.
Re:Meta Meets Microsoft on Thursday October 13, 2022 @09:52AM (#33190940)
Absolutely. Perhaps someone can chime in, but how does one take notes in VR.

I know it’s terrifically old school, but I routinely jot down notes and reminders for myself in meetings. Do I take the googles off? Are do I use the VR pen and VR paper? I guess I could use the keyboard?

I agree.

But, what's it that they say -- pride goeth before a fall?

If Twitter collapses into a burning hulk is that -really- a bad thing?
