It also undermines your leverage if you want to bargain with the company over things like a raise in salary. You also have less protection against malicious actions from your work.
Re:Context switching costs more than we give it credit for on Monday January 18, 2021 @03:25AM (#25819498)
I have the similar feelings as the author when randomly dealing with tasks one by one. These feelings were gone when I grouped the tasks by some criteria firstly before dealing with them.
Re:Backing up data like the adult I supposedly am on Monday September 21, 2020 @03:10AM (#24540656)
Currently I use node.js + rsync + duplicity to create two backups, and it works pretty fine. Firstly I create a backup to a local server via node.js and rsync, then upload them to the remote server via duplicity, which supports both encryption and compression. Both tasks run periodically and automatically, and backup files incrementally.

Re:Security by obscurity is underrated on Friday September 11, 2020 @01:19PM (#24445002)
Guess obfuscation is the goal, and the methods include using random variables, disordering code, inserting verbose code...

Re:I made a simple geolocation service on Friday July 24, 2020 @10:59AM (#23940273)
Though a little bit off-topic, before the service http://freegeoip.net/json/ ceased, I used it a lot in testing. I built one myself with the simplified source code from https://github.com/voyagin/freegeoip since I want to minimize the response time. BTW, the listed repo isn't mine.
Baidu has worse UX after google search exited the mainland china. The many so called newer internet companies are actually copying and localizing. Blocked by the GFW, the inaccessible instagram can never be the main stream. Instead of the detecting intrusion, DPI plays a huge role in controlling the freedom of speech. And with the help of ML, DPI is even smarter than before. Fewer people of new generation in China know Google, Facebook and Twitter, and they only know the second-class analogue of these service providers.
“ Necessity is the mother of invention and nowhere else is there the capital, political will and now sheer necessity as there is on the Mainland.”

It’s also the mother of the GFW, which greatly impede the innovation. For example, many latest IT technology cannot be speeded effectively.

The battery of my 2018 MBP can not last even for 18 months before its performance decreases drastically, which is disappointing.
Re:Using Anki to remember what you read on Friday March 06, 2020 @06:39AM (#22502810)
I would better endeavor to digest the content and let it be forgotten than to spend time organize it and remember it repeatedly.
Re:I Want Off Mr. Golang's Wild Ride on Monday March 02, 2020 @03:42AM (#22462727)
Go is an opinionated language, but opinion is not just right or wrong, and it’s getting complicated with time passing by. Opinion might be prejudice. Anyway, I like the multiplexing and go routine in go.
Re:I only use an iFrame to crawl and scrape content on Thursday December 26, 2019 @11:49AM (#21885024)
You can even inject a browser extension to chrome with selenium, or even back the selenium with an upstream proxy. So why iframe, what's the edge?
Re:Want to learn a new skill? Take some short breaks on Tuesday April 16, 2019 @08:08AM (#19672919)
I have been trying to remember 15 thousand words for the last 3 years during which I have similar experiences.Several times, I pushed myself hard to keep learning for hours, but ended up with efficiency decreasing as time went by. I may be unable to take in anything after two hours of intense learning. Then I try to rectify my own approach to find the most suitable method for myself. Following is my own experiences. Whether the break is needed depends on my specific task. Whatever task I do, I try to keep doing it without any break for at least about 45 minutes. If I’m coding, I need less intervals of break, and I can keep coding as if I enter a status called the mind flow. While if I’m reading and digesting a whole book, I need to stop sometimes to think. Well, if I’m remembering and digesting plenty of words and its usages, it’s better for me to take a break more frequently, maybe I will watch a short video about 20 minutes every 45 minutes, to clear my mind.

IMO, it all about the ability to keep oneself concentrated. I’ve heard that some people can stay concentrated for a very long time, like several hours, and I’m not this type of person although I once experienced this state for two days and lost it forever. And I get exhausted more quickly when I am less concentrated than I am.
