Re:The Company Behind The Biggest Consumer Brands on Saturday July 28, 2012 @11:24PM (#4307419)
Not trying to be a troll but the thing that jumped out at me was the P/E listed for P&G and my mind immediately compared it to the FB P/E at the IPO.
Re:The Internet Map on Saturday July 28, 2012 @11:16PM (#4307404)
Both H (Bill Hewlett) and P (Dave Packard) were at Stanford prior to WW2. And Silicon Valley pre-dates the Internet era. See Fairchild Semiconductor, The Treacherous Eight, etc.
Re:PHP: The Right Way on Saturday July 07, 2012 @09:28PM (#4213258)
I think it is because we (as a community) should be past the piling-on stage and on to the constructive discussion stage. Snark doesn't add to the discussion.
Re:ESR: Cisco provides a lesson on Thursday July 05, 2012 @09:22PM (#4205915)
Even if Cisco was running open source code they could still put ALL of this language into this agreement. The difference would be you could see the actual mechanism in work if they had open source code. The egregious part is the language, not the implementation.
Re:Amazon Digital Markup: 129,000% on Monday June 11, 2012 @09:31PM (#4098203)
Just to clarify, it is only 25% of this particular book. Sounded to me like the delivery charge was fairly independent of the cost of the book.
Re:Latency numbers every programmer should know on Friday June 01, 2012 @12:41AM (#4052001)
If I have 1000Mbits to send then gigE is 10 times faster. But in the article we are transferring only 2k across the network. Mixing latency and bandwidth here. The latency to send 2k across an empty network isn't 10 times greater on a fastE versus gigE network, right?
Re:Latency numbers every programmer should know on Thursday May 31, 2012 @07:47PM (#4051070)
This may be ignorant and please correct if I am off base but given the same physical medium isn't sending 2k across the network the same cost whether you are at fastE or gigE? Given the network is not saturated?
I don't know why he uses the term "private certificate file." It is a private key.
Things like "reports so easy even your boss can understand them" don't go over real well with my boss.
Re:We Got Hacked, Here's What We Found on Thursday April 05, 2012 @08:55PM (#3805454)
Wpscan is an incredibly easy tool to use for both good and bad. It makes it very easy to brute force logins.

Re:Memory modules from Apple.com are 10x market price...why? on Thursday December 29, 2011 @09:56PM (#3406386)
I am too lazy to look it up but is there an equivalent mark-up on Dell branded memory?
Re:What to Look For in PHP 5.4 on Wednesday December 21, 2011 @07:58PM (#3379840)
Woah, in one sentence you claim about PHP devs feeling the need to go OO and then the next sentence you extol the virtues of ZF? ZF is all OO, all the time.
Isn't this a drop in the (tax write-off) bucket for them?
Then somebody will come out with a free app that does the something or better than the paid app. Lather, rinse, repeat. Blah.
I know the Internet has seriously damaged the music label's revenue stream but why hasn't it done even more damage? It is 2011,the labels should not still have this much power, should they?
Re:The Strange Birth and Long Life of Unix on Thursday December 01, 2011 @07:26PM (#3302114)
Ok. Awesome article. Even more awesome that I didn't have to click "next page" 12 times.
Re:FreeBSD 9.0-RC1 Available... on Sunday October 23, 2011 @04:37PM (#3147176)
I have used FreeBSD since 2.2. I used to laugh at the slashdot trolls saying BSD is dying but I really think it is dying. The commercial support is just not there.
Re:Groupon Restates Revenue, Revenue Fell In Half, COO Exits on Friday September 23, 2011 @09:17PM (#3032197)
This doesn't seem so shady when you realize that there are also these things called "liabilities" that you need to account for. It should be fine to count the whole cost as revenue as long as you are also accounting for the expense on the other side.
Re:Why Silicon Valley Is Running Scared From Health Care on Friday September 23, 2011 @07:57PM (#3032054)
To your second point - it is entirely possible that people are traveling abroad to get medical care that was developed here but not yet approved for the general public. That doesn't contradict their original point. I think they more than just hint that the problem is regulatory. The fact that investing in medtech has a late exit time period speaks to the regulatory hurdles and they point that out in the article.
Re:RFC2468: I remember Jon Postel, by Vint Cerf on Saturday September 10, 2011 @10:16PM (#2983009)
Folks, these are the shoulders we are all standing on. Let's try not to mess it up too badly.
Re:Apple changed everything? Yeah, right. on Sunday August 28, 2011 @08:10PM (#2935371)
Apple DID NOT invent gui. When Jobs visited PARC he saw three revolutionary ideas:

GUI Networked personal computers Object Oriented Programming

Source: http://www.amazon.com/Fumbling-Future-Invented-Personal-Comp...

Seriously, that book is a must read for any person that reads this site. 3 dollars for a used copy. And Apple did not license anything GUI related from Xerox - there was a lawsuit involving the lack of licensing the technology.

You know what rubs me the wrong way? I am a geek - I love it when the geeks get the credit for making things work and the marketing people just get the credit for the shiny veneer. Woz is the geek here and I feel like he doesnt get the credit he deserves. Anybody know where Woz worked before Apple? HP - he took the risk of leaving a well established company and joined forces with Steve Jobs. I am not saying it didn't work out well for him but I think too many people forget about him and focus on the other Steve. Oh well. Oh yeah, I wrote this on my iPad and it took forever to compose. FWIW.

I am going to make one more request for a single page version. Or for instapaper to pull down the whole thing in a more intelligent manner.
This week I used a screwdriver to pry open the top of a rack mounted server case because it was stuck shut.

Re:Red Hat CEO At LinuxCon: I Have No Idea What’s Next on Wednesday August 17, 2011 @10:03PM (#2897688)
Is there really any shame in linux not "owning" the desktop? I try to use Ubuntu, I really do, but almost every day I fire up vmplayer.
Can we really not differentiate between the two? TV, on its own, is a one way medium. Social media is interactive and allows two way communication. This is going to get some people up in arms but it is a realistic knee jerk reaction to think about shutting down social media when your populace is organizing mayhem using these networks. Even if shutting down the networks is an exercise in futility.
Re:In Defense of Call Of Duty on Saturday August 13, 2011 @02:01PM (#2881522)
I always thought the freakonimcs guys had an interesting spin on exposure to media and how it relates to elevated rates of violence. http://freakonomicsbook.com/superfreakonomics/chapter-excerp...
Re:United States loses AAA credit rating from S&P on Friday August 05, 2011 @08:47PM (#2852436)
This really should be a call for both parties to start working together but it will most likely turbo charge the blame game.
