They are fully aware of the complexities because six million people in Inner Mongolia in China already use this script.

The current situation is this: "As of 2015 there are no fonts that successfully display all of Mongolian correctly when written in Unicode" [1], meaning that specialized software using Private Use Areas of Unicode are the only way to typeset it.

It's not wrong but it is confusing – it's showing you what its current status is, which should be shown somewhere else than in the timeline.

The page says that as of today (2020-01-01) the status is active. The wording is confusing.
30 reported suicides in 2008–2009 in a company employing 100,000 people. This is a suicide rate equivalent to France's average national suicide rate.

Re:Why there isn’t an Apache Arrow article in Wikipedia on Wednesday December 18, 2019 @03:34PM (#21829140)
It's strongly discouraged and looked down upon. Editors with a conflict of interest take up a disproportionate amount of other editors' time and are practically never able to write neutrally about themselves or their company.

It was deleted in 2005 for being a blatant advert, and again in 2010 for the same reason. I doubt it was actually a notable company in 2005.

Re:Category:Obsolete occupations on Wednesday December 11, 2019 @10:44AM (#21763472)
Absolutely. You could even add fake citations to online newspapers – the odds of someone checking are very low, and I continually stumble upon either blatant fabrications or misunderstandings that have stood there "sourced" for years on high-traffic articles.
It's an app for children. Would you not expect to be ousted from Club Penguin for repeatedly starting discussions about Abu Ghraib?
Almost all textbooks and dictionaries use their own transcription key, I haven't come across plain old IPA in language learning textbooks, only in linguistics textbooks.
Re:The Global Fertility Crash on Thursday October 31, 2019 @07:35PM (#21414902)
It's only a sign that we're doing something wrong if you assign a positive value to procreation. Many of us don't, either for ethical reasons (life includes suffering, and you have no right to inflict suffering on someone who didn't ask for it) or environmental reasons.

And as the logical conclusion of that ethical value system, I do sincerely hope we get a Children of Men scenario where we put an end to procreation entirely. (I'm aware that that viewpoint is fringe)

Air traffic control at domestic airports in many regions do communicate with pilots in the local language (even if they're are all able to switch to English at a moment's notice).

It's all just jargon, for those of us working in the field it's really not difficult to both know the international Latin medical terms and the local terms to use with patients or colleagues.

Re:Alarming surge in drug-resistant HIV uncovered on Thursday August 01, 2019 @08:28AM (#20583151)
That would be men-who-have-sex-with-men, those with infected partners, sex workers, and intravenous drug users.

That is a fairly large number of the population that would be placed on an expensive drug with several side effects.

Re:Alarming surge in drug-resistant HIV uncovered on Thursday August 01, 2019 @08:24AM (#20583128)
The drug has several non-minor side effects, is prohibitively expensive, and is the same as the treatment for someone who already has the virus. I for one think it's improper to prescribe a drug with these nephrological side effects to a large number of otherwise healthy individuals, not even accounting for the cost.
Re:Alarming surge in drug-resistant HIV uncovered on Thursday August 01, 2019 @08:14AM (#20583073)
No that's not the case, the side effects of PrEP aren't minor. PrEP should not be prescribed so lightly.
Re:How Much Water Do You Need to Drink? on Thursday July 25, 2019 @01:56PM (#20527705)
There's AutoConvert and EverythingMetric for Chrome. The automatic conversion is sometimes a bit annoying as there are edge cases.
Please post substantive comments instead. I would also assume that a majority of 50 year olds would rather work on their own time making good content than have a short lived, strenuous, and micromanaged career in lower earth orbit. Doesn't mean those 50 year olds have bad opinions or should be dismissed.
I feel that's a bit of an overstatement, having studied them a bit is one thing, but most people here cannot comfortably communicate at all in Danish or a 4th language, and cannot read a book in these languages.
Re:Americans Greatly Overestimate U.S. Gay Population on Thursday June 27, 2019 @09:24PM (#20300695)
I would actually be interested in seeing a crude analysis of this, because I don't know if there is a skew or if we just tend to notice the things that break our expectations.

There are a few recent shows where a gay character is a part of the core ensemble, but I'm not sure gay characters are overall more than 1 out of every 30.

Re:Americans Greatly Overestimate U.S. Gay Population on Thursday June 27, 2019 @09:02PM (#20300570)
This can also be explained by the fact that humans are terrible at estimating percentages. I would assume we'd see similar result for other questions. "3% of the population" sounds ridiculously low, but if you interact with 30 people each day you're likely to meet someone in that small category.
Re:Iceland tire of tourists trashing their nature on Wednesday June 26, 2019 @12:24PM (#20286452)
Flights to Iceland are cheap because the airlines' business model is being a hub for cross-Atlantic flights. Later on, advertisers started marketing towards those who were already crossing the Atlantic, encouraging them to spend time in the country since they were already there.

It would be possible to tax tourists more for their stay, limiting low-value tourists. It would also be possible to just put a hard limit on the number of visitors, which to me sounds like a reasonable solution, as no country can handle this growth in visitors in such a short time.

It's not due to cochlear size, we lose sensitivity to high frequencies because the hair cells slowly degenerate with age.
I'm not sure what you're referring to, the agricultural sector in Europe is rather strong. The US is the world's top exporter of food, but the Netherlands come second.

Re:Biomarker for chronic fatigue syndrome identified on Sunday May 05, 2019 @02:00PM (#19834037)
Yes, CFS does often comes as a result of a mononucleosis, about 22% of adult mono cases have CFS after 6 months, and <5% have CFS after 2 years. It's much better to contract mono as a child.

You don't get "tested" for CFS yet, it's currently a diagnosis given when all other explanations have been tried.

Re:Biomarker for chronic fatigue syndrome identified on Sunday May 05, 2019 @01:51PM (#19833985)
I have severe CFS, but I personally don't take it badly when someone suggests it's psychosomatic. Since everything I know and everything I feel is a hallucination of the mind, I have no way of knowing what my subconsciousness is influencing. "Psychosomatic" also doesn't mean "it's your imagination", but that it may be an interplay between mind and body. The mind does control many responses and hormonal activity.
I just fail to see what exactly tracking teenagers would be keeping them "safe" from. It seems like it wouldn't result in anything but resentment and sneaky behaviour.
As each Wikipedia project is independant, there's not really any cross-wiki communication and the guidelines can vary quite a bit.

But I would not have supported this, I just don't believe these kind of a stunts are effective, just annoying to users. Everybody already has copyright-directive-warning-fatigue. If you must you can put up a banner.

That we are self contained human beings isn't obvious to me. All of my opinions, thoughts, and actions are a reflection of my surrounding social group.
