Of course, coming from that background one has to learn to recognize some new concepts to even use online dating - stuff like short-term relationships, folks going for high bodycount, that sort of stuff.

Yet, stating that in an open source talk has the subtext of someone wearing a t-shirt "I know HTML - How To Meet Ladies".

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026) on Monday May 11, 2026 @02:07AM (#48091532)
I go on with my small side-business of modding Skyrim. During lockdown it wasn't clear what Bethesda games the paid mods store will cover; had it been only for new titles, I had only vague idea that Starfield would be some space sci-fi game, so my idea was to make puzzle-adventures using the base game assets (and blending in the world game is nice but optional), and puzzle-adventure is a very broad genre in itself, so maybe I would end up making up distinct unique gameplay for each of the modded games.

Recently I came up with an idea for a puzzle-adventure under Playstation mod limitations. That means no new assets, and no new scripts either. Simply, let's treat it as a different game, and see what can be done with that. I researched the built-in scripts, and oddly, every script that could be used to enable a game object was not repeatable. Ditto for scripts to disable an object. The only repeatable scripts were toggle scripts (disable an object if it is enabled, enable if it is disabled). So last week I prototyped some puzzles using that primitive only, and while doing so, I figured out how to trick the engine into making those do-once scripts repeatable, too...

A solo gamedev project; upgrading my free Skyrim mods; thinking about learning vibe-coding for the little "web 2.0" side-project idea of old, seems could be fun to squeeze it in.

Funny they both originated from Sclaveni/Sklabenoi, just one of the tribe of south Slavs. But for the slave trade in middle ages, maybe you guys would call us Slovs (the jury is out on that)

Right now, a video game. If there ever will be AI that does the particular assignment no worse, I'll consider it the coming of the age of AGI. (modulo my game getting sucked into the training set, of course)
In copyright law, moral rights are the right to attribution, integrity, that sort of stuff. It's a loan translation from French 'droit moral'

Unsure if the original baiter meant this

It appears that Bloomberg ran such a story this year spring.

I recall I was aware of lesswrong.com when it was still about bayesian stuff and not the hive of basilisk oil salesmen. So, before I stumbled on the fanfic (penned by "Less Wrong"), but for plenty of folks it might have been the other way round.

Save you some reading, it's about political biases of academia in USA, not about "why Elon Musk renamed Twitter to X" kind of ideas/people.

So, what's the performance of BG3 in Act 3, in streaming?

I had an unfortunate incident of my GPU going kaputt this summer, and while waiting for the warranty repair I tried playing games on an older machine. But not that old, at the onset of lockdown it was considered new. And on that rig, BG3 suffered even in Act 1. The game after a few minutes would go from nice 45+ FPS on ultra to 10-15 on lowest graphics settings, staying in that slow mode for up to hours. It wasn't correlated with GPU temperature, or fixable by some weird setting.

I wasn't aware of GeForce Now. Maybe I would shell out a few bucks. Assuming the savegames would be transferred eventually to my gaming PC with GPU replaced. There, BG3 works fine in Act 3 (except for crashing in one area, fortunately it's a side-quest that can be skipped).

Seems to me a software bug, and I suspect owners of rigs in between encounter it only in Act 3.

Avoiding such horror stories could be an incentive to use streaming, even though GeForce Forge doesn't seem to have a free tier the same way Stadia did, it might make for it in other aspects. (it has a free tier however for 1 hour daily, and right now I have 52 gamers ahead of me waitlisting. I'm curious about BG3 performance there, so I'll wait it out)

Oh, the test kitchen demo is pretty limited.

If you are curious about their linguistical style, the difference between GPT-3 and Lamda is akin to the difference between Ralof and Hadvar playthrough, respectively - https://www.palimptes.dev/ai

Mind you, these made silly mistakes, mixing overlapping tasks and whatnot. ChatGPT with GPT-4 beats that, even if it is primed to remind us from time to time about the name of the company who made it.

Then I doubt you would approve as a novel game mechanic anything that Nintendo attempts to patent within that claim. An exemplary new mechanic recent decade game is Baba Is You. It isn't obvious. If it was, someone would come up with Baba Is You pretty soon after Sokoban was made 40 years ago.
This isn't a new debate in the modding community. There were all kind of opinions voiced. Robbie is not fond of AI voices, but he tracks NSFW mods because they are a natural concern.

Anyways, it is the custom there that Nexusmods moderation reacts to suspected mod asset stealing and such an issue can be raised by any website user (as mod authors often leave and are no more around). However, for the voice cloning/impersonating, it requires a notification from the original VA, or some other credible confirmation that the particular VA is against this.

Re:Why it is time to start thinking of games as databases on Wednesday June 07, 2023 @11:43AM (#36228332)
In the context of the OP article, a similar functionality to querying a database is "Find matching references" kind of quest alias filling https://www.creationkit.com/index.php?title=Quest_Alias_Tab#...:

However it is not 100% documented what kind of optimization this "query engine" has implemented, there are some vibes that sometimes it could be faster than a full scan.

A serialized data format is here if you are interested https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim_Mod:Mod_File_Format

Why do I see this fallacy all over anti-porn threads? Keto diets might be a fad and about as difficult as quitting porn, but still.
Re:Low Code Software Development Is a Lie on Saturday April 15, 2023 @04:17PM (#35584153)
Every low code sounds like a plan, until you have to make something like "computer AI for Heroes Of Might & Magic 3 battles".
To be fair, I had a lot of fun last year asking various LLMs to play Skyrim, imagined as a role-playing adventure with a human game master, and watching as they break sooner or later https://www.palimptes.dev/ai

With ChatGPT-4 though, I haven't yet got it to make something that dumb, though I had to remind it not to hallucinate the part of the story that traditionally is governed by GM.

Could it be what your demo is doing behind the scenes?

Re:What Archaeology Is Telling Us About the Real Jesus on Friday April 07, 2023 @01:19PM (#35484206)
Uhm, if you are interested so, you should realize it is these false narratives that are used most convincingly in support of Jesus historicity.

Consider that passage from Flavius referencing Jesus. It is somewhat different in the Arabic translation version. Some people goes as far as to doubt if this passage is altogether an insertion of later christian scribes.

On the other hand, they usually argue that Jesus being born in Bethlehem is made up to match some old prophets, and then they accept that if Jesus was completely made up he would not be from Nazareth. (*)

There are more analyses like that in "Gospel of Afranius" by Kirill Eskov (who is known for "The Last Ringbearer"), and I found out only today that it was translated to English recently, wikipedia says Dec 2022. Enjoy!

(*) it is relatively rare that someone will observe that there could have been another settlement called Bethlehem just closer to Nazareth.

For the illustrative purposes, here's how Blenderbot reacted to playing Skyrim https://pastebin.com/raw/ZTsnMWPi

You have a point, though I do believe that LaMDA would gather some traction if it went public, even though it wouldn't spit out folks homework in convenient chunks.

Re:Natural language is the lazy user interface on Saturday January 28, 2023 @02:10PM (#34560514)
Though from what I gather about the computation, it does not easily separate into two steps, "understanding"/"generation".
Re:Natural language is the lazy user interface on Saturday January 28, 2023 @01:19PM (#34560011)
Yeah it lies, indeed, "print(list(filter(lambda x:all(x%d for d in range(2,x)), range(2,3*10)))[:11])" will print the list of first eleven primes, up to including 31.

So if you want to say that state-of-the-art LLMs could recognize the user intent better than existing voice assistant products, just say that.

I am afraid there's no point in decoupling the problem of lying from that; there is no silver bullet that would fix it

ChatGPT improves over LaMDA in pretty-printing code and passing certain Turing-test-trick questions. It's an improvement not unlike a delivery bot that swaps packages recipients is an improvement over one that invents up non-existent recipients.

What makes ChatGPT interesting is that perhaps it could end up a freemium service, whereas Google might remain closer to ad-supported business model(s).

Not sure if you got downvoted for naively believing ChatGPT, but it warns you that it has been trained on data up to year 2021 - so the answer would be outdated, even if it was correct.
Kinda. I started a gap year, thinking I'll finalize my Skyrim mod while traveling round the world. Coworkers bade me farewell and wished good luck on my next adventure. Two weeks in, Elon Musk took over Twitter

So now I'm also settling thoughts on my next lifestyle business kind of project, something I kept in mind, though with those AI improvements these days it might get a new flavor
