News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

GJim

The number of people fawning over Trump, Putin and Kim in this thread is bizzare. The troll farms must have been very busy.

Journals now routinely ask you to declare any use of AI in writing. Better authors are up front about its use, so peer review can take this into account.

Annnnnnnnd the FUD has begun.
> America is crazy, why are you letting people sell your data like this?

Because of FUD spread about data protection laws… such as the GDPR?

Re:Dutch government had hacked into Jared Kushner's phone on Friday October 23, 2026 @09:38AM (#50208802)
Yes.

In the civilised world, those caught abusing public office resigned.

"Deny, deny, deny" in the face of all evidence is a curioulsy Trumpian move.

Disapointing to see your factually correct post downvoted.

Somebody must have a very thin skin!

> Which I never used because it requires permission to see my location

A healthy mistrust.

It's bizare how many people give their coodinates to any random website that asks for them.

> Just start the process to ban this party already

Oh dear.

Whatever happend to Voltares "I disprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it"?

EDIT: The irony of this post being downvoted in an attempt to hide it, rather than discuss an opinion you disagree with!

EDIT2: Please understand I have no love for AfD, rather a love of open politics (let everybody hear how crazy they are!).

Four milli bits per second sounds very slow to me.

I think most people would suggest the converse..... that gold prices have doubled over the last three years compared to virtually any stable western currency.

This isn't a good idea....

If using random text, there are many examples of, when asked to answer a secret question, telling the call centre droid "I just hit a few random keys for that one" and this being accepted.

You would do well to assume each call centre droid is a board kid more interested in his co-workers tits than your clever answers to security questions.

Re:Celebrating 70 Years of Fortran on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:32AM (#50116664)
> I used to work on software that still uses Fortran from the 50's

Gnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Online conversation about Fortran is invariably domniated by people who waffle about Fortran 77, FORTRAN and bloody punch cards!

Yet modern Fortran versions are actually rather spiffing. Not to mention they can be used with the old libraries which are utterly bombproof.

There is a reason Fortran is still used for mathmatical modelling. It's simple to use, and you can really trust it.

Mind. Blown.

Please don't spout such obvious made up bollocks. Thank you.

*Gbps

(Irritiating, but not as bad as those who insist on having milli-bit speeds I grant you).

> The timing is interesting, given that it comes days after Musk said Ukraine had gone "too far

More like Zelensky, in stating the Trump-Russia diesel deal was a 'weak decision by strong partners', has pissed-off the Orange One with his famously thin skin.

America, your president is a liability to the free world.

Re:Why aren't AI companies being charged for hacking? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:35AM (#50073368)
How is that different or worth singling out from playing <violent computer game> or watching <violent film>?

EDIT: Am I really arguing with somebody in favour of 'rights' for AI's?

Re:Why aren't AI companies being charged for hacking? on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:51AM (#50071762)
"Abusing" a robot? A machine?

You seriously have a problem with that?

Re:Character.ai Files for Bankruptcy on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:49AM (#50071729)
It's the FUD spread by the AdTech industry (including here on HN by people who's salaries are dependent on invading our privacy) that is holding back sensible data protection laws in the USA.
Trump is a symptom of the disease.
Obligatory: "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent".

So if I kick my car because it won't start, that is 'abusive'?

Get a grip mate.

Would he recommend you say "thank you" to automatic doors!

I reserve the right to tell a machine to fuck off.

Re:Beauty in DVD Menus on Friday October 09, 2026 @07:46AM (#50019150)
People really object to DVD menus because they 'delay' watching the film?

I suggest this takes the desire for instant gratification to a new level.

> the program itself is racist as hell. Microsoft is literally bringing in foreigners, paying them much less to do the same damn job.

Nationality != Race

Good god!

I genuinely choked on a mouthfull of tea reading this!

I'm ammused people call these "smart speakers".

Use their real name: Smart Microphones.

Alexa = Amazons microphone.
