Down here in Tasmania we have Black Currawongs (strepera fuliginosa) that patrol around on bin night calling out to each other when they find a wheelie bin they can smell food scraps in. An individual bird can open the lids on their own. Our neighbours countered this by zip tying full 600ml water bottles to the lid handles. Heavy enough that a bird couldn't lift the lid, but not heavy enough to stop the lid opening when the truck lifts the bin.

In response to this, the birds now work together in groups of 3 to open the lids. So people started zip tying two water bottles to the bins... the birds can't get past that as there isn't enough room for them to work in a group of 6.

Me, I just put some green waste on the top of my bin before I take it out. We've also replaced our front lawn with native plants and there's lots of things in there that the birds like to eat. When something in there goes to seed we'll often have 20+ currawongs.

They always leave my bins alone.

Begged my dad for a c64 in the early 90s. The sales guy at Dick Smith talked him into an Atari ST 520. Soon after Atari Australia went broke and I learned about exchange rates and the Great Britain Pound.

One reason is making it easy to scale things up or down for printing on standard sizes of paper.
I've been impressed with orca

https://github.com/stablyai/orca

I did have some issues getting it installed on a headless server. I sort of gave up and installed the instance that I use as the remote server on a Debian + xfce machine I had laying around.

It did that thinking about a helmet but didn't actually include a helmet. And there's no "actually, wait, this is just a cute little image no helmet" thought.
Re:Gemini 3.8 Flash on Thursday September 03, 2026 @08:16AM (#49549012)
I've just returned home after doing a 100 day "half lap" of Australia in a camper trailer with my family. I made heavy use of gemini to plan much of it. Getting packed up with a general destination in mind and telling gemini "we're leaving X town at 10am and heading to Y, where should we stop for lunch. My wife has coeliac disease, find us somewhere that does good gluten free options" was one of the many things I regularly leant on it for.

Never had a bad suggestion.

Here in Australia our once public phone company, telstra, have converted many phone boxes to be free to use and also provide a small wifi AP.

Re:GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked? on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @06:55PM (#49457042)
Near the end of the 8.5 years that I worked at GitHub as an enterprise support engineer, I asked in an all hands if a "GitHub Classic" product had been considered. Much like World of Warcraft Classic, I imagined it would be a rewrite focused on matching the simpler feature set of the past.

I was basically given the same response that blizzard gave that question; "you think you want that but you don't".

Rectangle solved my macos window management annoyances.

Why is there no 17? :)

Conditional logic .agents/rules/16-conditional-logic.md

Identifiers and UUIDv7 .agents/rules/18-identifiers-and-uuidv7.md

Thanks for sharing this approach, I'll give it a shot in my mono repo project.

Re:My Midlife Crisis Corolla Is Fast, Furious, and Modded on Thursday July 16, 2026 @03:39AM (#48931426)
If you're talking about the US Landcruiser it's actually what we know as a Prado over here in Australia. My dream midlife crisis vehicle is a 2025 Landcruiser 79. Mostly for towing capacity and being able to access more offroad areas of Australia, but admittedly a lot of the appeal is just how awesome they look when decked out for "adventuring".
The person you're replying to mentioned a Toyota, which I also drive a newer model of. It has two modes: lane assist (which works like you have described) and lane centering (which automatically is enabled when you switch on cruise control). The centering will continuously nudge you towards what it decides is the center of your lane.

It's awful and I've trained myself to automatically long press the button on the steering wheel to disable the entire system every time I get behind the wheel.

You've so perfectly explained something that I picked up from my father. He always seemed to have a way to get special treatment from people. I always explained it in a very Australian way; "he's a bit of a character" and figured it was tied to his gift of "telling a yarn".

But reflecting on it now, it's because he was always on a quest.

While everyone else is posting top level comments about which tools they're using rather than PgAdmin; I've been a huge fan of Beekeeper Studio since I tried out a range of postgresql db apps such as DBeaver, Postico, etc a few years ago.

Re:Nova Launcher Added Facebook and Google Ads Tracking on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @12:03AM (#46688085)
For me the advantage of nova is increasing the density of app icons able to be displayed on the home screen and app drawer.

I run with a 9x7 home screen grid and 8x6 app drawer.

This allows me to have a weather widget with a large clock and an excellent calendar widget called Todo Agenda displayed while still allowing me to have all my apps accessible on one screen.

Or maybe the next great story teller to create something meaningful that touches people in ways that change their mental model of the world.

Perhaps allowing them to find the positives in new technologies.

Or, you know... Slop.

An open mind doesn't hurt though.

True of every comment thread on HN.

Absorbing the thoughts of other humans on any topic you have deep knowledge of makes you see that all coverage of EVERY topic is subtly incorrect / poor / has an agenda.

It's sort of liberating when you realize.

Re:Unreal Tournament 2004 is back on Thursday December 04, 2025 @01:16PM (#46150862)
For four great years in my career I ran game servers for an Australian ISP. I really enjoyed tossing up servers for new HL2 / UT / Quakeworld mods and seeing what picked up a community, chipping in on a cyberpunk HL2 mod in the same period.

I have such rose coloured glasses of that time.

Looking back, most of the dedicated server software felt like it was just tossed over the wall. Some of the stuff we used to have to do to get things running happily on headless linux servers was very hacky. Others simply HAD to run on windows hosts.

I feel like the entire industry died as games became "live" services.

Nearly 2 decades later when my kids got into Minecraft, I stumbled into the hosted MC server world and was just amazed by the size of the industry around it.

It was a real "arrrh this is where that same spirit ended up" moment.

And now of course there's huge servers funded by getting kids into gambling and pay to win.... Gross.

Re:PGlite โ€“ Embeddable Postgres on Thursday December 04, 2025 @01:00PM (#46150663)
My read is that the person you're responding to thinks that pglite could be a better fit than sqlite for ci/cd, where currently sqlite is used.

Not that testing is the main use of sqlite.
