It's not a social media site. It's a collection of public fora. It's a grimoire of generalist soireeriae. A menagerie of civic lollapaloozii. Reddit is best understood as a potpourri of rabblers colloquiums. Just don't call it social media, please.

Picard would have sided with the guy who learned to read and write properly. You're Inarticulate. Just another 6th grade reading level trekkie who missed the point entirely.

Parker Lewis came out during my blunder Years, he was a role model. He was that kid just a few years older who had it all figured out. I buttoned my shirts to the adam's apple like Parker Lewis. I styled my hair like him.

My high school english teacher told me utopians become fascists and at the time I didn't know what he meant by that, but I've been on HN since 2010 and I've watched it play out first hand.

Those are insane numbers. Are they real?

I had a theory that in the future all online interactions would need to be brokered by an agent that can stay on top of all those changes, and that the internet would be a hostile if not unuseable —and possibly also illegal— place to visit without having a personalized AI broker that is insured, and that you pay for. It would begin with you owning the agent but it would end with the agent owning you.

I've never seen Steve Eisman talk before. Steve Carell's depiction of Eisman in The Big Short was on point.

Reddit Cofounder Alexis Ohanian has a startup, Monumental Labs, which is applying robotic milling to stonework. The finishing process is still done by hand and appears quite labour intensive

With VR coming and then going technology has shown itself to hold within it no more immersive capability than a good book. It is not about rendering firepower it is about hitting the right notes.
The whole culture has gotten worse. The bright young talents of gen Z just aren't showing up in any medium.

...No wait, to be fair, they're very good at influencing. They can influence like no previous generation ever could.

The western routes offer favourable climate conditions for cycling. Brazil's savannah is alright but the idea of pedalling 1000s of kilometres through the heat, humidity and mosquitoes of the amazon sounds atrocious to me.
You're just a dumb ape, you play dumb ape games, you cannot get outside of your nature, and it's in your nature to tell yourself fairy tales about how special you think you are, I get it. That's why I'm a nihilist, because I can see that different peoples all have different stories about why they are absolutely convinced they are god's special chosen people.

Our "moral agency" is no different from that of a dog's, it's just the evolved game theory outcome of many millions of years living as social animals. It's an intuition about when to cooperate and when to compete.

As social animals we have devolved into violent heathens regularly throughout history if you think those violent tendencies isn't hardwired into your own DNA you're kidding yourself. When a technology is invented all of it's negative externalities and misuses are invented as well, and if said technology is used for violent heathenry, it's inventors are complicit.

And yes, I'm lazy, that's a win condition, why wouldn't I be?

By "everything" I'm presuming you mean the trivial little games that humans these days are preoccupied with. You can play those games if you like, but they won't save you. Everybody dies in the end no matter how smart or motivated they are. The final score is always zero.
Human's territory covers the whole planet. I can get to the far side of it in less than a day. You can wipe out a whole continent, the people there can easily just move to another one.
Re:Little Caesars thinks big with AI on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:10AM (#50207697)
By thinking big they want to use AI to forecast when to make pizza so it can tell store managers how to do their job. Had to dig through a lot of word salad to get to that.

When I think big with AI I imagine superintelligence riding on beams of energy spreading outward to all corners of the universe at the speed of light from this little blue dot right here.

No matter how much you load Link he is just as nimble and spry. Encumbrance isn't an issue in the Zelda games

>As humankind spread throughout the known universe, technology advanced and eventually machines were made that would make decisions for people. This propelled the creators of these machines into a new technocratic class, effectively controlling the worlds of the common people.

It's right there in the opening paragraph of OPs post. It's the people who controlled the machines that could not be trusted. We're not worried so much about about AI going rogue. We're worried because people who control it have aleady gone rogue. It is too powerful and dangerous a tool to be trusted in the hands of primates.

Re:Butlerian Jihad on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:30PM (#50127314)
You got me wondering what the Imperium of Man's official stance is on AI:

The creation of a Silica Animus is also a terrible crime under Imperial Law by the decree of the Emperor of Mankind Himself as stated in the Treaty of Mars which united the ancient Mechanicum of Mars with the Imperium of Terra in 739.M30. Tradition holds that such unholy constructs are inherently evil and a perverted abomination in the sight of the Omnissiah.

Adeptus Mechanicus religious doctrine states that the Machine Spirit of a Silica Animus is a twisted mockery of the soul of a Human, always treacherous and insane.

Ancient texts tell apocryphal stories, shrouded in metaphor, of such murderous and powerful creations during the Age of Technology, and the legions of the "Men of Iron" that served them in the great war against Humanity remembered as the "Cybernetic Revolt."

I find the anarchist traffic of developing world cities to be more aligned with natural game theory principles than proscriptive protocols. For a computer it may be simpler.

Camera's can't see in the dark. There is no perfect sensor. Waymo relies multiple sensor modalities: Cameras, Lidar, ultrasonics, radar, gps, inertial measurement units.

Toronto is embroiled in partisan politicking around bike lanes. The provincial premiere is overriding city council to have them removed, which is what I suspect is the motivation behind the parent comment.
Re:How pro-China are Chinese models? on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:35AM (#50116681)
Even amongst the Chinese models there more with an anti-china bias than a pro one, according to these tests.
It's exactly the same, actually. The point of my comment being that Wolf Blitzer's daily campaigning for war (with calls for regime change among other things) happened on the same CNN that is presumably not pro-war-with-iran enough to be convincingly unbiased for the parent comment.
CNN's biggest backers spent decades campaigning for war with Iran. Every day for years and years Wolf Blitzer would take some time in the situation room to tell us all about the impotance of binging regime change to Iran, going back to the 90s.

If even CNN are too biased for your tastes then it's probably not them. It's you. Hegseth is also a true believer.

People form communities when they have shared stressors that they work together to manage, but what remnants of that lifestyle remain today is little more than a skeuomorphic throwback to more vulnerable times.

Everything about modern life is designed so you do not have to directly depend on anyone for anything. You can instead be entirely dependent on a series of distant and unaccountable corporations to get through the day.

>and almost certainly more than you will ever know

That's something you should question. While Doctors know more than you about medicine in general, one usually does not have to do a lot of research to know more about their specific ailment than the family doctor does.
