News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Fraterkes

I'm sorry if this came off as overly dismissive, I enjoy people posting stuff they're passionate about on hn, even if I don't necessarily like everything I see.
Miss the days where these kinds of posts were a jumping off point for technical discussions about gamedev. Guess learning that people use a whole stack of LLMs for these kinds of projects now is also interesting.
Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:30PM (#50279549)
A macbook with apple pencil support that can be held like a tablet (turn the screen 180 degrees?) would be incredible for digital drawing. Hope to see it in my lifetime.
Re:A few thoughts on intensity on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:37PM (#50233415)
There are many roads to succes, and I think a sort of single-minded ruthlessness (or, yes, more charitably “intensity”) can be a fairly simple one.

But I believe that that ruthlessness is the source of a lot of suffering caused by, and happening inside of, companies.

I think it’s really important to try to find a way to be successful that doesn’t just involve being obsessive and single-minded, and if you’re unwilling to do that you’re letting yourself off the hook in a bad way.

The page only mentions that you're obligated to report it to them, not that you're not allowed to further publicize it (unless I missed something).
Re:CERN and Mistral join forces to accelerate AI for science on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:56PM (#50155608)
The distinction for many people is that math and cs feel like very natural domains for LLMs (and importantly, domains that enable quick iteration and verification). Much less applicable with eg biology and other fields that require lots of physical experimentation.

(in)Conveniently those are also the fields where most ordinary people would experience the most effects from accelerated progress. Dario famously promises potential cures for cancer and dementia.

Your argument was about the inability of an old guy to physically threaten someone with robbery. Glad that Claude found you a blogpost
Honestly thought this was a very competent way of talking about the more controversial stuff "outside" the game. Blow's a smart guy who genuinly believes that games can be vehicles for exploring some heady themes. Reducing a review to "is it fun" does him and us a disservice.
Most typeface designers are pretty normal (excepting their choice of one of the most simultaneously precarious and work-intensive creative careers). David Rudnick is (in my and many others opinion) infamously pretentious. He is a prolific designer though, and even many people who dislike his work acknowledge that he's quite good at what he does.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:30PM (#50074424)
Honestly surprising if other labs aren’t training for svg generation. Feel like SVG’s are going to be really useful for dynamic UI generation stuff that goes beyond cobbling Html together
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @11:16AM (#50044208)
Many people would, many wouldn’t. The comment I’m responding to casts the decision as so uncontroversial that even asking the question is inhererently damning.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:57AM (#50043993)
I think this is just an embarrasingly bad faith / low effort way of engaging with the argument.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:51AM (#50043929)
I don't know how to word this in a way that won't get me into a pointless semantics argument, but the word Cure in the slides is clearly used to mean "substance intended to be (but not necessarily confirmed to be) a cure". If you think it's badly worded that's fine, but ostensibly the point here's not to "win" the argument game, but to get his intended point and engage with that.
Re:2D Vehicles on Saturday October 10, 2026 @04:54PM (#50037064)
If hand coding doesn't matter, why have your ai write a lengthy explanation on the implementation and architecture of some feature? You don't think this juxtaposition is a bit odd?
Re:Grieving the Loss of Details on Saturday October 10, 2026 @03:21PM (#50036209)
Why do you look forward to this happening to your intellectual pursuits?

If I grant you that cheap plentifull code will be a net boon to humanity, it's still normal to be unhappy that it's you specifically that will need to be ground-down in the cogs of progress. 5 years ago I also believed that the future could (and would!) be vastly better for many people, I just didn't know that betterment would be conditional on me losing the work I enjoy. In that sense LLM's are only a loss to me.

Many people feeling equanimous about this stuff are financially secure, later in their career or working at a manegerial level. That's fine, but at that point you're obviously not suffering the same pain as the author.

Re:Bevy 0.20 on Friday October 09, 2026 @02:56AM (#50016987)
I mostly use Godot, and I've been happy with that choice, but one thing I've been sligthly envious of with Bevy is that (from afar) many of the people involved with building the engine seem to be both very opinionated and knowledgable in the area they are contributing (I get the impression that this might just be more common with Rust in general).

In Godot it happens pretty often that the focus is on just implementing some feature first, and then it takes a number of releases (and passes by people who care about UX) before it feels "polished".

Re:The Mathocalypse on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @05:00PM (#49998744)
Having stuff explained to you in patronizing tones? How horrible Scott!
Re:City building games have a Soul Problem pt.2 on Saturday October 03, 2026 @01:06PM (#49945953)
In the past “why don’t games look like my mockup??” was annoying, but at least required some effort / talent. We didn’t know how good we had it.
Re:Using any C++ library in Godot on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:46AM (#49891023)
Lots of things right too, thankfully
Re:Using any C++ library in Godot on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:44AM (#49891002)
For C# there’s basically nothing in engine, so you’d use Rider or Superluminal. Which is fine, Godot can have a bit too much nih imo
Re:No Sloptober on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @05:22PM (#49808292)
The responses here, and discussions on hn more broadly, make me feel like ai use is something that people are uniquely insecure about.
Re:The NASA/ESA Mars Sample Return mission has been canceled on Monday September 21, 2026 @04:20PM (#49792822)
Do we really need to frame China’s succes here in terms of American decline? Do you think everyone outside the US views the moonlanding as a black page in history?

It’s fine to talk about a “race” if jingoism is the thing that gets most people on board with funding Nasa. But we ought to know better.

If it’s GENERIC reward seeking behaviour, why does alignment work sometimes? Why can we give a decent LLM a goal with a set of constraints and have it stay within those constraints fairly often?
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:34AM (#49671715)
These articles are frustrating on HN because it's quite common for programmers to tinker on small projects in solitude, so when artists complain about ai you get all these "just make stuff for your own sake, or where you in it for the fame?" reactions.
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:20AM (#49671583)
One of the big points of art is expressing something to other people. Tired of this sort of shallow dismissal where wanting recognition, or for your art to reach people is cast as a kind of vanity that real artists ought to get over.
Re:Silicon Valley Is Transforming the Military-Industrial Complex on Thursday September 10, 2026 @03:03PM (#49648729)
Social ills whose minds are pure machinery! Social ills whose blood is running money! Social ills whose fingers are ten armies!
Re:Silicon Valley Is Transforming the Military-Industrial Complex on Thursday September 10, 2026 @01:51PM (#49647722)
Little slip of the mask here where we seamlessly transition from the perspective of an American working for an American tech company to someone living in a country neighbouring Palestine.
Re:On Really Trying (2009) on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @06:42AM (#49624300)
I don’t know if it’s the fault of your parents’ parenting style, but there’s a kind of shortsighted meanness in this comment that has been the source of vast amounts of human suffering throughout history.
Re:Is mathematics about to enter the conservatory? on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:00PM (#49600451)
Before AI it was possible to "express" yourself to someone else by recommending them a piece of art you liked. There's a lot of art in the world, expressing many different things, so you could actually get across something very specific by being a good curator / recommender. But nobody would seriously claim that they were actually creating, painting with a broader brush at a "book level" instead of a "word level" when they were just curating good novels.
