Are the AI bro lobbyists asleep at the wheel? I assumed human creativity was already sold to the highest bidder.
Re:CDC Data Are Disappearing on Saturday February 01, 2025 @10:11AM (#42898898)
“The people” are too stupid to blame unfortunately, they have no idea what’s going on.

Average IQ Americans freebase propaganda and Joe Rogan for thoughts. The Kremlin and the Republican propaganda empire have been paving the way for a Project 2025 Neo Nazi hostile takeover for decades.

John Doe from Florida doesn’t stand much of a chance when every TV, cell phone, and Facebook bot in his state is beaming the world’s largest psy-ops laser-beam at his head for half of his life.

I tend to blame the Fascists. But yea, the future is bleak. We’re cooked in America, at least.

Re:Oh Shit, Git? on Thursday January 16, 2025 @07:40PM (#42732771)
lazygit ! Just needed to throw out a mention because it’s an amazing tui for visual orientation, is super fast, and can be used with a mouse and keyboard (or just keyboard) from the terminal. I saw it mentioned on a thread here last year and have preferred it as a fast “oh crap I think I made a mess lets back up” tool over the more complex gui apps I’ve tried (almost all of them).
Re:Nintendo announces the Switch 2 [video] on Thursday January 16, 2025 @11:57AM (#42727785)
The games are crippled by how archaic and underpowered the hardware is. TOTK is beautiful _despite_ the hardware limiting its true potential, robbing world class studios, and forcing them to cut corners.

It’s indefensible considering how much legendary IP that potato is holding hostage.

This is what Brave browser tried to do, but everyone on HN had a spasm cus “boo crypto”.
Re:Something is wrong on the Internet on Monday December 23, 2024 @09:44AM (#42494714)
Exactly this. Because capitalism tells us to pay people the minimum (which isn’t enough) and charge them the maximum (which is too much) and suddenly living is unaffordable for the majority.
Re:Something is wrong on the Internet on Monday December 23, 2024 @09:32AM (#42494631)
Airlines should be a federal service like the post office, not for profit companies cramming the poor like sardines and scamming them over baggage space.
When the “tools” are built from countless lifetimes of blood sweat and tears dedicated to mastery and bottled by mega corps to siphon all of the value and sell it back to the people by laundering their intellectual property, your angle falls flat. The “poor” can’t eat art. They used to be able to sell their art to buy food. Now 5 tech bros are seizing all of that food money, artists are starving, humanity is being regurgitated into slop, and you’re cheerleading for molloch.
Re:How types make hard problems easy on Thursday December 19, 2024 @05:23PM (#42466358)
This isn’t true, is it? I’ve only ever heard that TypeScript has one of the most advanced type systems of any mainstream language.. but I don’t have enough experience with other languages to know how true that is.
Re:Computing Inside an AI on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @10:57AM (#42451556)
MacOS has this by default on every app because it indexes all menu actions and makes them accessible via `cmd + shift + ?`.
Re:Ask HN: Is NPM Having an Outage? on Sunday December 08, 2024 @06:43PM (#42361747)
JSR is better so use that. And you can install npm deps from esm.sh instead.
Re:Nvidia Fugatto: "World's Most Flexible Sound Machine" on Sunday December 01, 2024 @11:48PM (#42293205)
I'm the same way! But there is a _lot_ of music that's designed to repeat _just_ enough for you to enjoy / learn a pattern before evolving. Almost all of the music I made back in the day followed these rules, like Omni or Mountain Hunter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BJ0smdh4QI
Re:Show HN: Feels Like Paper on Wednesday November 27, 2024 @07:49PM (#42261316)
I liked the fun animation, but I agree that the text should be darker for readability / accessibility.

I often proxy Vercel through Cloudflare for a free cache layer on their edge cdn.
Unless my designs are predictable and cookie-cutter, why would I want copilot to generate them? How would it know exactly what aesthetic each element should have? I love unique, expressive designs that capture a brand, so Tailwind only serves to make my markup harder to read.
I would love to learn about some of these anti-pattern proofs if you have any examples or references you can share!
Re:Ask HN: Do you consider working for Meta an ethical issue? on Saturday November 09, 2024 @07:40AM (#42094102)
Capitalism is unethical. Name a public company that gives a flying fart about what is ethical beyond the bare minimum. The ones that can afford the fines don’t even bother with the minimum.
Re:Former President Trump is projected to win the presidency on Wednesday November 06, 2024 @06:38AM (#42060444)
What about when he said he wanted to be dictator so people wouldn’t have to vote anymore? And when he made himself above the law with MAGA court justices? Or talked about a firing squad for his opponents and opening fire on peaceful protestors? Or when he attempted a violent coup on the White House? Or when he praised Hitler and asked for generals like Hitlers that will do anything he says without question? Or when he praised Putin, Kim Jun Un, and other the dictators of the world?
Re:A React Renderer for Gnome JavaScript on Monday November 04, 2024 @05:12AM (#42040141)
As a (mostly) Typescript / Svelte dev, React is like a shitstorm of bad abstractions, and looking at it makes me irrationally upset. I refuse to flush any brain cycles down that drain.
Re:M4 MacBook Pro on Friday November 01, 2024 @06:32PM (#42022214)
My MacBooks are built like a tank and outperform/outlive everything else easily for a decade. I don’t need more than 128GB of RAM or 2TB of storage… and I don’t need to repair what doesn’t break. It would be nice to have the option, but the time I save using an OS that just works like MacOS is worth more to me. And the best software in the world always runs on it. It’s a no brainier for me.
Re:It's time to leave Bitwarden (2023) on Tuesday October 22, 2024 @11:26AM (#41915230)
Too bad we can’t pay a little for decent for software. I’ve been considering moving to the new Passwords app that Apple has shipped to all my devices… is it any good?
Re:Svelte 5 Released on Saturday October 19, 2024 @08:00PM (#41891802)
Apple Music isn't OSS, but it's quite a large Svelte app: https://music.apple.com
I’ve had lifelong intermittent sleep paralysis and it’s one of the worst feelings. Happened to me yesterday during a nap actually! I went to get up, and only my right foot moved an inch (or so it felt). I had to count to 3 and muster all of my strength to try to move again, and it didn’t work until the 4th time, when my body finally giggled a little.. enough to wake up the rest of it and free me once and for all.
As a Svelte / vanilla TS dev, I hate React because looking at it makes me feel like I’m drowning in obtuse, leaky abstractions, none of which feel necessary and all of which are required to do _anything_ at all.
Re:Show HN: Modern Benchmarking Tooling for JavaScript on Saturday September 28, 2024 @11:13PM (#41684576)
Definitely going to try this out!!

I’ve been using the `vitest bench` command; being able to slap a `.bench.ts` file next to a module and go to town is convenient: https://vitest.dev/guide/features.html#benchmarking

I use the Octal app on iOS which does, though it seems the trailing ; broke the link for this md renderer.
Re:Show HN: JAQT – JavaScript Queries and Transformations on Monday September 16, 2024 @11:34AM (#41557118)
Zero Typescript inference is such a missed opportunity. You boomers and your stringly typed spaghetti will be the death of me…
Re:Factor 0.100 Now Available on Sunday September 15, 2024 @05:03PM (#41550370)
Clicking around the website for the past 30 minutes has left me way more confused about what this is than when I started. I get the feeling that it would take me at least two weeks to figure out how to make a todo list app in this language.
Imho, your take isn’t as “petty” as it is goofy and unproductive. I’m saying this as someone who has rejected social media entirely and deleted it off of my devices like 10 years go.
Re:Unity is cancelling the runtime fee on Thursday September 12, 2024 @01:07PM (#41523053)
That is a tragedy. The amount of talent and brilliance robbed from the world…

I still don’t understand why companies buying other companies should be a thing at all. Anti-trust solved, competition restored.
