This is more about wringing Anthropic's hand to agree for handful of defense companies to be the official AI translators to government.

Art and cultural movements are a favorite vehicle for any country to serve its intelligence interests. An example is Goethe-Institut
Re:Your key to success isn't more luck or hard work on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @06:20PM (#49279377)
I am in the circle of richer friends and there are few children. My anecdotal theory is harder drive in their families on career, education, etc resulted in this. And their families probably provided for that high economic connectedness, which enabled them for success. Genetic oblivion is a terrible reward for all that work.
How important to your diet is that lettuce? Do you want to get fat eating bread all the time or can you stick your burger on that lettuce leaf? Done.

The header is the standard, which allows us to even have this conversation about tracking sources.

Re:Ethics Is the Skill That Matters Most Now on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @02:15PM (#49011072)
This is a conjecture that ethics emanates from the whole of society and somehow keeps the things from falling apart and then explains it to have cyclical nature. I don't think ethics exists anywhere other than impressionate minds and words on paper.
we have likely moved on from this to satellite as a stop gap.
Re:Banning lead in gas worked. The proof is in our hair on Tuesday February 03, 2026 @01:30PM (#46875062)
Don’t worry, we can get our lead from spices and every food that includes them. Lead is cheaper to get than cinnamon and even cocoa, so it ends up being favored adulterant to increase weight at sale.
Lemonade purchased Metromile and significantly increased prices. 2.5x if I recall correctly. This has forced me to move to Geico. Now, since prices have increased and new self driving car insurance is giving a discount, are you effectively paying same old rate?
I avoid sugar pretty thoroughly, but my cholesterol is high because I can't walk past a breakfast sandwich. This an n=1 observation.
If we just admit to it and do it anyway, we won't have to masquerade with democracy theatrics.
I would pick tyranny over "democracy" import any day. Neither US or UK have a great track record here.
C11 and this bill makes me think about what situations does the government need this sort of "weaponry"? I think the plausible answer is war.

Jam resistant comms are critical for drones, and other precision weapons and their infrastructure. Even if line of sight is interrupted modern drones can return to signal nowadays, relay information, and return to target with corrections. You may not need optical cable anymore
Re:State Farm seeks 22% emergency rate hike on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @04:37PM (#42939170)
Re-pricing insurance seems to be the most effective way to reduce property values right now.
I am getting 1989 flashbacks, but this time this is a coupe that subverts institution to its purpose.
Re:After USA Ban: Google Kicks Kaspersky Out of Play Store on Monday October 07, 2024 @04:46PM (#41770856)
Well, with enthusiasm like that it is no wonder China and Russia banned all western social media and are actively trying to replace these services with homegrown. China was first, Russia late to the party, but working on it.
I am afraid we might be too late for maglev party with self driving on the horizon. Non-functioning last mile transportation and ruined cities (as in for pedestrians and density) are another shadow.
Re:Signal messenger blocked in Russia, says Roskomnadzor on Friday August 09, 2024 @02:51PM (#41204392)
Russia is trying to follow China's example to shed dependence on West controlled services and grow domestic alternatives. Which is long overdue since they don't have equitable access to these services.

Mini is hot garbage on wheels comparable to VW. I am really surprised to see this.
Re:Oregon Decriminalized Hard Drugs. It Isn't Working on Saturday November 11, 2023 @11:52PM (#38237424)
The horror of the current approach is the concentrated influx of drug users from other states that magnified the issue in California and Oregon. I am resigned to the fact that everyone waits around for the current wave of users to simply die off. If the decriminalization was distributed evenly among the states, there would be a chance for somewhat orderly transition.
Easy to defeat with automatic target recognition and tracking. You only need to get in the general vicinity and let the drone figure it out, which is what I suspect new Lancet is doing.
Russian Lancet new generation already uses target locking. I suspect if it is possible to clone a piece of equipment, the only answer is an economy of scale because neither side will have technological advantage.
Re:Govt of Canada proposes a 4% Link Tax on Friday September 01, 2023 @03:06PM (#37354927)
The whole bill C11 is the scariest form of censorship that is sold as some national pride benefit. Control over information is only tightening with this new link tax to line up Google and other social media to the party line.
Another problem with student loans is that they are frequently issued for way more than bare minimum required to pay tuition and study materials. This extra amount just exacerbates the problem and gives universities room to get to that money via tuition increases. Students may legitimately use that extra cash for living expenses, but most of the time it is just fun money expense.
Prisoners provided a decent chunk of recruitment for Ukrainian forces at the beginning of the war as well. Regardless of country, prison population represents a group, already familiar with weapons, violence, and audacity to use them, which can be reliably sourced for fighting or advancing other interests that require extreme measures. Even if Wagner is dissolved, its remnants will control the criminal underworld of Russia and will be a punitive instrument for any dissent.

I think I am loosing my taste buds - my preference is for gunpowder tannin flavor, which I get by pouring whatever the hottest water setting is on my pot ~208F.
