Poe's Law and all.
Little tip for the younger folks reading this: if you are given two contradictory explanations for something, the correct explanation is probably the third one.
HOLY GOD. Worst possible wording.

Such as explaining the logical fallacies in this argument and the one above?

If you're trying to tell me there's a sucker born every minute, I knew that.

Not ready to mount weapons on, if that's what you're asking.
Re:Anti Tank Vespa on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @09:30AM (#38364075)
This reminds me of the contemporary use of e-bikes in Ukraine, which I understand is one of the many reasons that this war was not the curbstomp Russia seems to have expected.

I think I've just seen the perfect vehicle for commuting in Boston.
Re:Orca 2: Teaching Small Language Models How to Reason on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @09:26AM (#38364017)
At the moment I read "how to reason" in the headline my bullshit detector started to go off.

LLMs do not reason, they do not think, they are not AGI. They generate by regurgitating.

Re:The hidden beauty of Berlin's indoor pools on Monday November 20, 2023 @09:45AM (#38349017)
I mean I don't doubt that it happens, but the swimsuit rule probably cuts down on it. And to be fair, that pool is possibly the sexiest place in Berlin.

The EZ is the keyboard I have. I found that almost harder than getting used to the layout, was the extra pressure that's required, going from using the squishy keyboard that came free with my last desktop machine to something with mechanical switches.
I don't think anyone is holding Ireland responsible for "Irish" pubs. It somehow just became a genre of bar on its own, and it's easy to do in a lazy caricatured way, suitable for someone whose chief aim in owning a bar is rooking tourists: shamrock-based logo, change the name to "O'Whoever's", and have Guinness on tap, good to go.

Then you have other places like my old hangout from 20 years ago, which had a few of the same visual signifiers of Irishness, but the owner being in fact an Irishman, he didn't feel the need to go overboard with that. Hope that place is still open and doing well.

The dome pool is also the one part where you are required to wear a swimsuit. I'm pretty sure the reason is that if you didn't, let's put it like this, that water would become a health hazard pretty quick.
Re:The hidden beauty of Berlin's indoor pools on Sunday November 19, 2023 @03:21PM (#38337401)
I was last there three to four years ago, nudity was required except in the pool, there you had to wear a swimsuit.
> Vic 3 being another example

Isn't that the truth...I love Paradox games as a rule but you have to accept that they'll be slow.

Oh, sorry, I thought you wanted to have a discussion, I wasn't clear on the fact that you just want to be a condescending dick. Have a nice life.
Re:Why I will always prefer to work from home on Sunday November 19, 2023 @01:26PM (#38335914)
I am also a dedicated worker-from-home, and I know plenty of other people who are smarter than me who work by choice from the office every day.

Even confining the discussion to those of us who logistically can do all of our jobs over the network, I've come to think that there is no single policy that can be applied over an organization that won't alienate a significant fraction of your staff. Organizations that don't find ways to accommodate the whole spectrum of, uh, "work-remoteness" are going to be at a serious disadvantage in the years to come.

My point is not whether the rationale is valid or invalid: the point is, they're not going to do it. Is that wrong, in the ethical sense? Quite possibly. Do they care? No.

Try googling the "Golden Rule" and you'll find a version that says "they who have the gold make the rules".

Perhaps nobody has told you yet, but other people might have different tastes than you do.
Why _would_ they block themselves? How would that be to their advantage?
They want a free market _for everyone else_. What's the point of being rich and well connected if you can't socialize your losses and keep your profits?

True--I was talking more towards the end of the use of coax for Ethernet, which was also the peak of the dialup days.

When the most common data transfer technology is a POTS modem that can do 56kb/second...

Re:Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years on Friday November 17, 2023 @11:08AM (#38305471)
And if a single vampire tap comes loose, the entire network segment goes down. Don't miss that.
Re:Ethernet Is Still Going Strong After 50 Years on Friday November 17, 2023 @11:07AM (#38305453)
You remember correctly. This was the most common form of Ethernet cable when I was first starting out roughly 3,000 years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10BASE2

I've been meaning to get a longer TRRS cable so I can go s u p e r w i d e and release my shoulders even a little more. It's good suff.
Re:Walking has plummeted across America on Thursday November 16, 2023 @11:02AM (#38291170)
"Reasonable suspicion" is a joke. The cop writes down that they saw someone in an area known for criminal activity acting in a furtive manner, with something in their pocket whose outline is consistent with the appearance of weapons and/or drugs. Done and done.
Re:Walking has plummeted across America on Thursday November 16, 2023 @10:46AM (#38290990)
You're wrong both de jure and de facto, but thanks for dropping by.

First example: representative, especially if you have dark skin.

Second example: representative, because Alabama.

The ability to kowtow to corporate foundations to get funding?
