I definitely prefer phone trees the ai agents. Something that has never made sense to me is why we even need most of the phone trees. Could they not just have separate numbers? Billing is X num. CS is Y num. Save the human species minutes for every fucking call.

I realize the decision makers have been prioritizing the opposite. Making calls take as long as possible but I have no idea what is incentivizing them to do that.

Re:Ask HN: What did you read in 2025? on Sunday December 28, 2025 @06:16PM (#46415484)
I hated book 5. I thought 4 was the worst of series until I read 5.

The ending was just really shitty and stupid to me.

Exempting religious content makes no sense in any context to me. It's all human generated content.

It's not hard. They make it hard for dumb reasons.

This shit is genuinely terrifying and it seems like no one is doing anything to stop it.
Re:Ask HN: Why hasn't AMD made a viable CUDA alternative? on Tuesday April 01, 2025 @10:44PM (#43553244)
I worked on at both companies on drivers. The programming models are quite different. Both make GPUs but they were designed by different groups of people who made different decisions. For example:

Nvidia cards are much easier to program in the user mode driver. You cannot hang a Nvidia GPU with a bad memory access. You can hang the display engine with one though. At least when I was there.

You can hang an AMD GPU with a bad memory access. At least up to the Navi 3x.

Re:Ask HN: Why hasn't AMD made a viable CUDA alternative? on Tuesday April 01, 2025 @10:30PM (#43553189)
Having worked at both Nvidia and AMD I can assure you that they both feature lots of generated header files.
How do the batteries not require some kind of hazardous waste removal/cleanup process?
Re:The Cult of the American Lawn on Friday March 21, 2025 @09:39PM (#43442516)
It is the government's job to make sure we have fair contracts to protect consumers right? Contacts are not always enforceable.

Land is a limited resource. We are not making any more of it. Sometimes just looking farther away is an option but often times it isn't.

HOA's being required on certain properties is bonkers to me. It feels like extortion. Either agree to these onerous terms or get nothing.

Re:The Cult of the American Lawn on Friday March 21, 2025 @02:03PM (#43439063)
It is really hard to avoid them. I think the only solution is a federal law allowing you to opt out of any HOAs.
This is exactly how I feel. It's like they are racing to find the shittiest viable product.
AC changes? Can you expand that acronym?
Re:How Math Academy pulled me out of the Valley of Despair on Thursday March 06, 2025 @02:32PM (#43284225)
I completely disagree. Proofs are very abstract. Learning to read them is a skill you have develop before you can learn anything from them.
In your mind how should they protest?
Re:Thinking About Why YouTube Is a Monopoly on Friday February 21, 2025 @05:39AM (#43126059)
I don't see Nebula as a competitor to YouTube. They're both streaming platforms and have some of same content.

Nebula isn't free. Only invited creators are on there. Seems like they're clearly focusing on a niche.

I also had issues with Nebula at first. It's been steadily getting better. When did you try it?

I think now it probably performs more reliably than Youtube + Firefox on my Android.

They probably don't even know. If they do know then they're happy about it.
Re:Ask HN: Do you still use Google? on Sunday February 16, 2025 @12:24PM (#43069750)
Are any of the options mature enough to be a daily driver yet? It's been a while but I was not successful with switching to the pinephone when I first got it. The librem5 was still having battery issues last time I checked as well.
Re:Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @12:56PM (#42952452)
The Golden Gate Bridge is a public bridge and a destination for suicidal people.

Foxconn is a place where people live and work. Not accessible to the public.

Where is the overlap?

Re:Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong on Wednesday February 05, 2025 @04:51AM (#42946285)
That's not the same at all.

I straight up get better results than current Google.
Re:Apple Launches Apple Invites on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @07:38PM (#42941656)
Worse they require frequent logins on device to keep the with client working. Just making the account on device isn't enough. You have to maintain it as well.
Re:Apple Launches Apple Invites on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @06:27PM (#42940773)
Wow. I assumed you could use Whatsapp on the web but you literally can't. You have to have an Android or Iphone. I guess maybe there's a way to fake it with emulators on your computer but that's a lot of work that you shouldn't need to have to do.
Cool Story Bro. Username are meaningless. I know that you know that.
This is a False Dilemma fallacy. I'm not going to pretend the government is perfect but handing the keys of the kingdom to a Nazi will always be a bad idea. Let's do something else.
Musk is a Nazi. I've read history books. I'll take the status quo over Musk every time.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant. Nothing these people are doing is transparent.

They're doing shady stuff in the shadows as fast as they can. Which is exactly the way you do things when they're not above board legally or ethically.

I started reading the article and couldn't finish it. My mood is already low enough without this depressing content.
Re:Why making friends as an adult is hard on Tuesday December 24, 2024 @05:46PM (#42505497)
I think the core idea is fine though. Kind of like random acts of kindness but as a team. I guess it's a respin on Habits for Humanity right?

I don't think it's idiotic. I think you're selling yourself short using that word. Try "silly".

No. No I wouldn't.
Re:Is that ship still stuck? on Friday March 26, 2021 @12:38PM (#26594118)
In an emergency situation like this: could they not use helicopters to lift containers off of the ship and just stack them next to the canal until they've freed the ship?

Seems pretty quick to setup and do assuming there are helicopters that can move that weight.
