Re:Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:43AM (#50272029)
We are talking about people here, not corporate accounting. Stocks are financial assets.

You didn't really highlight how any of this is a problem? Yes, if you sell some of your assets, whatever kind, to pay for taxes then you'll have less assets in the end. That's literally how taxes work.

This is all a guesstimate, but my gut feel is that a considerable part of the HN population doesn't even read the linked content, only the comment section here.

To be honest, I'm very much surprised Amazon hasn't eaten Microsoft's lunch here. Offer out-of-the-box AWS instances with Gitlab, SLAs, backups and the works, should be straightforward.
Re:Slack Code on Thursday August 20, 2026 @11:11AM (#49375782)
This is the easiest sell of the century, product can discuss and implement changes without ever getting engineering involved. Or at least that's the theory, I think everyone here can think of a number of reasons to have reservations on this front.

Compare the same algorithm/program in Python and C and that's roughly your answer, no?
The center tiles on a Rubik's cube don't move, they only rotate in place.

I'm sure you've never made a typo or mixed up two similar words before.
I'm not sure this statement holds up to any scrutiny? Surely the number of people doing any kind of sports vastly outnumbers people on any kind of psychiatric medicine?
> When we look at higher-quality evidence and direct comparisons, exercise performs similarly to, but not dramatically better than, established treatments. Overhyping it risks damaging credibility in this important area of mental health.

I get where he's coming from, but at the same time, if we can achieve even roughly the same result with exercise as with medication, that's a ridiculously huge win. Side effects of antidepressants are usually uncountably many, whereas for exercise it's (just) injuries and it's pretty well understood how to prevent them. Granted depression is a thousand different diseases in a trench coat, but even if we can ameliorate some forms with exercise, that would still make it considerably more available and approachable.

Exercise doesn't need to be complex or intimidating. Starting out with going for a short walk counts as exercise. You could even do it while you have the patient with you on an appointment, go walk out and about with them. Depression is a complex beast and the more tricks we have up our sleeves to fight it, the better.

If you're depressed, trying to make exercise happen can be the hardest thing in the world for some. But for those that it isn't, it could help a lot.

Re:Kill The Cookie Banner on Sunday July 26, 2026 @03:18PM (#49061427)
Not wrong in the EU, you don't need to ask for consent nor notify about cookies which are required to make the site functional. Tracking and ads don't fall under that though, which is why every site these days does need to ask for your consent.
Re:Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport on Sunday July 26, 2026 @02:48PM (#49061104)
I mean, you can get to and from practically any airport by bike if you're determined enough.
I don't know, as far as I can tell the demo on the homepage is bugged? Or maybe I misunderstand how it's supposed to work? If I click reset after 2 seconds and then click add 1 right after it, the reset never fires. What's up with that, that's not what I expected to happen?

Braun is the Boeing of appliances. A once great company that's now been hollowed out by beancounters.
I don't have any skin in the game here for Germany specifically, but I would point out that B1 is an incredibly low bar to clear. With concentrated effort, you can reach that level in under a year, I know because I've done it. Given you have kids and are otherwise preoccupied, maybe a few years. At six years in, it's purely a matter of whether you yourself actually want it or not.
Re:Programmers need to start meditating now on Sunday July 05, 2026 @08:05AM (#48793525)
I don't think this is a constructive way to look at life. You can't control what others say and do, what you can do is choose how you react and act on it.
That's not what exercise intensity means, clearly you're not even remotely familiar with the domain.
There is no correlation between exercise intensity and likelihood of injury, this is nonsense. You could e.g. just as well make one wrong move when going for a one rep max.
Re:A native graphical shell for SSH on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @06:41AM (#48730767)
Isn't this is basically every webpage with a backend component, just displaced one more layer? I suspect the main reason this doesn't make sense is that it would take an order of magnitude more bandwidth as opposed to just sending data like we do right now. Data has repetitive patterns which means it's often well compressibile as well.
Re:The operating cost starts after the demo on Tuesday June 30, 2026 @06:35AM (#48730722)
Probably one of the most reused and generic patterns in logos, you can find countless sites and businesses with something like that.

Re:The worthlessness of Vitamin D is mildly exaggerated on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @05:22AM (#48657256)
This approach doesn't make much sense to me. Why supplement something when you don't even know that you need it? You could make the same argument about any and every supplement and eat the whole alphabet soup every day, but that's just putting extra strain on your body.
Re:The worthlessness of Vitamin D is mildly exaggerated on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @06:24PM (#48652330)
Honestly you don't even need to know the recommended number. In many countries you can get tested for free, and if that's not the case for you, getting tested usually costs in the ballpark of a box vitamin D supplements. Measure and only then supplement, then measure again later. You don't need to fly blind.
If you know anything at all about the Deutsche Bahn, you'll know that it's most likely self-sabotage, in other words, incompetence.
Re:AI's Affordability Crisis on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @11:41AM (#48646833)
This doesn't really tell you anything useful. AI companies have both built huge datacenters and raised a colossal amount of money. Include caching, quantization and etc. All of those would allow them to undercut on price considerably, even more so if you count in all the users who don't actually cap out their plans. Prices going down doesn't really tell you anything about the production cost, especially in a market where every major participant is happy to burn money just for the marketshare.
Re:Steam Machine on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @10:43AM (#48645795)
Your mileage may vary, but I've never gotten reasonable performance out of Crossover. I have a decked out Mac for development and most of the games I've tried in Crossover still need you to turn the settings to damn near lowest possible.

How do you get the agent to stick to it without constantly rejecting tool calls with the same description? I've tried a similar setup a number of times and it tends to forget about this constraint very quickly.
