Totally shocked that a community full of Aspies is having a hard time mustering sympathy for this girl and instead have to pedantically inform the Internet that that's not really programming and what's the big deal anyway I did this when I was 12 in between stimming sessions and telling my parents every species of dinosaur.
There've been unhexeditable game consoles since the 70s. Doesn't seem to have impacted people's desire to hack thus far.

Heh. Want to place any bets they built the whole thing audio included and just before launch brought in the lawyers who quickly said WTF? To which the product team said ORLY?
Re:Cloud email service price comparison on Wednesday November 30, 2011 @09:52PM (#3298082)
Would you prefer SaaS, or web service? Will that soothe you?
Here's another scenario: idiotic developers ask for a boatload of permissions "just in case" and don't realize how sketchy it looks.

Re: How cold calling (properly) works better than AdWords on Monday November 14, 2011 @11:39AM (#3234591)
He addresses scale but only scaling up. What he neglects to realize is that AdWords et al are elastic, if I want to get 10x impressions over the weekend I can do that. With cold calling, not so much...

Charles Symoni (sp, I know) used to float the Intentional Programming team around on his yacht for weeks at a time. I think it was mainly to increase productivity though.
Re:The 10X Product Launch on Saturday November 05, 2011 @12:37PM (#3200145)
One of the more useful things I've seen on HN. However it seems to only really apply to B2B. There is a bit of a hand wave about B2C at the end. Would love to see more thoughts about its applicability there.

"well do data mining" is the new "well have ads" for unmonetizable businesses. Then again the data mining is probably just for ads anyway, so maybe it's just more of the same...
No Google doesn't read your email. In fact their spam detection just works by flipping the worlds luckiest coin at every incoming email.

Re:Logging the cloud with SimpleDB on Friday October 14, 2011 @10:19AM (#3111248)
How do you get around the 10GB/domain limit?

What do you do when your fleet gets big enough that you start getting throttled?

What's the query latency?

How do you delete old log data?

Paid search results? Would it really be incongruent with what DDG is doing?
Re:Zynga's Profits Down by 95% on Monday September 26, 2011 @11:39PM (#3041756)
Which do you suppose is bigger, 30% of Zynga's FB credits, or 100% of their FB ad spend?
Re:Zynga's Profits Down by 95% on Monday September 26, 2011 @11:31PM (#3041745)
Good. Suck it. This company is pure slime. I pity their acquirees. And it's totally worth my karma hit to just get this off my chest.
Nice accomplishment but I have to say that the idea of the product is off-putting. Still I guess it's up to people if they want to advertise this way.

I'm not convinced that this approach will always yield a higher viral coefficient than not forcing sharing in order to gain access. The interesting thing is you could actually run A/B tests on this.

10-20% (pathetic really)
Re:The Myth of the 99 Cent Book on Thursday September 15, 2011 @10:30AM (#3000478)
This guy is seriously misunderstanding the long tail. First of all the long tail is an opportunity, not something that "dies" (his words). It's an opportunity for authors because what authors have today is the opportunity to self publish and instantly receive global distribution and in the case of say Amazon sit on a store shelf that has millions of visitors a day. On top of that, they take 70% of the books retail price.

So all this and he's going to cry about the price point dropping?

For the record my book buying rate has probably gone up 10x since Kindle, partly due to price partly due to convenience.

Re:Announcing Joyent Cloud on Thursday September 15, 2011 @10:12AM (#3000409)
"A single AWS instance is not reliable, and isn't designed to be particularly reliable."

Source?

An AWS instance is simply an OS running on a virtualf (xen?) machine. On the largest instances you may in fact be the only virtual machine on the physical hardware.

Why would you feel more comfortable running a single instance outside of AWS? Your safety is just an illusion. Your MTTR is out the window. When you go down, youll have an outage that goes like this: "we'll be back in a day or two when I order new hardware and drive it to the colo. Also, the database will be time warping to the last backuP 24 hours ago."

Running on a single machine is never safe and AWS is cheap enough and comes with enough tools (ELB, RDS, maybe EBS) to allow you to become truly redundant and single fault tolerant.

Wonder how long that took to discover. MTTBSOD?
There is nothing more ironic than the jingoist segment of the population who are also ravenous Walmart shoppers.

It seems like such a no brainer for a political movement/party to run on a platform of restoring Americas manufacturing base.

I think people forget how many second order jobs are lost with the withered manufacturing base. Transportation, IT, HR, restaurants that people eat at on lunch breaks... I can't even enumerate how many second order jobs large scale manufacturing creates...

I regularly go out of my way to pay for American made stuff, so I can say I put my money where my mouth is. Same with shopping locally - farmers markets with local producers etc.

I don't know when well ever snap out of this way of life --- spend less to have more and the quality of life around you declines. Personally I wish my kid had less toys but they're so cheap that grandma and grandpa ship em by the boxful.

Ugh.

Re:Fucking Sue Me on Monday September 12, 2011 @12:10AM (#2985798)
Not just a way to run a business, but a way to live life. Might not work for everyone, just as the opposite of whatever this strategy is may not work for everyone.
Re:Java's Comb-Over on Friday September 09, 2011 @12:43PM (#2978765)
Great, another "Java analogy" post!

No real analysis, no quantification or evidence of anything. Just assertions and implications.

You could at least bother to apply your analogy to other languages. There aren't many that wouldn't meet the criteria. Maybe C# would get a pass. I dunno.

What is the new "reasoning by analogy" virus that has infected HN? "x is bad and I can draw some prosaic analogies between y and x therefore y is bad!"

Wait... I think it's infecting... Me!

"Who are Ruby developers fooling?"

"You know, when I see someone who obviously has hair plugs I just feel bad for them. They obviously have some gross genetic inadequacies that they feel compelled to hide. Hair plugs are a technology that's not good for anyone. And so what is monkey patching in Ruby? /code/ plugs. I feel bad for who uses them and they obviously must suffer from some gross genetic inadequacies."
