Just thought? No, "we've done tons of user testing" and reached the conclusion "it doesn't work". Watch the full video, not even a minute long.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zfir0Ide0A

Same conclusion that everyone has reached over the past four decades, at least. It even got a nickname.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touchscreen#%22Gorilla_arm%22

Current Apple should show their new tests that demostrate the opposite.

(Edit) The full transcription of the video, faster than watching:

"You know, the first thing you think about is this, right? We thought about this years ago. We've done tons of user testing on this and it turns out it doesn't work. Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. It gives great demo. But after a short period of time, you start to fatigue and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn't work. It's ergonomically terrible. Touch surfaces want to be horizontal. Hence, pads. For a notebook, that's why we've perfected our multi-touch trackpads over the years." -- Steve Jobs, 2010

Yet Qubes OS demostrates it's possible to run X11 programs isolated from each other. They had the need and will to improve security, and found the way over a decade ago.

Making server side decorations an important part of it. Oh, the irony.

The adult entertainment industry cared decades ago [0]. Their solution is simple: sites send the RTA meta tag if applicable, browsers in accounts configured by guardians as "children" look for it. [1]

Re:Arizona Bill Requires Age Verification for All Apps on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @05:23PM (#47067243)
We already have the tech, in multiple forms. First, tagging:

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

Second, all ISPs could offer in their basic service something like DNS4EU modes, just like they offered email and web space decades ago (optional, nobody was forced to use them).

DNS4EU https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS4EU#Public_resolver

Parents would only need to configure the account to "child". Laws could force companies to properly tag their pages and sites. And privacy would be preserved.

Instead we have to keep on fighting the Crypto Wars. The childs are just a decoy, the target is destroying basic rights.

Clipper chip war, eg. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip#Backlash

Re:State Attorneys General Want to Tie Online Access to ID on Sunday February 15, 2026 @06:30PM (#47028887)
And here we are again...

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

Tools avaliable for decades.

But as said multiple times, the childs are the distraction, the targets are privacy and freedom.

Re:Can I start using Wayland in 2026? on Sunday January 04, 2026 @06:46PM (#46493638)
QubesOS and Xpra+Firejail demostrate security can be improved including the X11 side. Solaris had Trusted Extensions. X11Libre has a proposal for using different magic cookies to isolate clients and give dummy data to the untrusted. Keith Packard also proposed something in 2018.
Or parents could set accounts to "child" and every service send the proper tags so the programs deny access locally. No third parties involved.

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

RTALabel https://www.rtalabel.org/page.php is over 3 decades old.

For some history about the issue, see Wikipedia:

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

The more "digi-ID so we are sure you are old enough, bitte" keeps been pushed, the clearer that it is about tracking and not about children. No matter how much they love to frame it the other way around.

Keith Packard, another legend, was propossing X11 improvents in 2018. [0] He does not seem to be paid to work in X11 or Wayland, thus being free to float ideas he likes.

[0] https://keithp.com/x-ideas/

It's like if Wayland is not just a graphical system, but a full business plan.

Control upstream, then companies wanting solutions will go to you first. Because why go to someone else in the FOSS market, when there is no certainty the code or standard (extension, protocol, etc) will get accepted, forcing you to maintain a fork? With IBM-RH and Ubuntu doings eg., it's hard to say FOSS is immune to vendor lock-in.

What cost do they incur while tokenizing highly mistyped text? Woof. To later decide real crap or typ0 cannoe.

Trying to remember the article that tested small inlined weirdness to get surprising output. That was the inspiration for the up up down down left right left right B A approach.

So far LLMs still mix command and data channels.

Re:You Should Feed the Bots on Monday October 27, 2025 @02:40AM (#45718025)
If the same garbage is repeated enough all over the net, the AIs will suffer brain rot. GIGO and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45656223

Next step will be to mask the real information with typ0canno. Or parts of the text, otherwise search engines will fail miserably. Also squirrel anywhere so dogs look in the other direction. Up.

Imagine filtering the meaty parts with something like /usr/games/rasterman:

> what about garbage thta are dififult to tell from truth?

> for example.. say i have an ad&d website.. how does ai etll whether a piece of fr history is canon ro not? yeah ik now it's a bit etreme.. but u gewt teh idea...

or /usr/games/scramble:

> For eapxlme, say I hvae an AD&D wisbete, how deos AI tlel wthheer a pciee of FR hsiotry is caonn or not? Yaeh I konw it's a bit emxetre, but you get the ieda.

Sadly punny humans will have a harder time decyphering the mess and trying to get the silly references. But that is a sacrifice Titans are willing to make for their own good.

ElectroBuffoon over. bttzzzz

It's deeper than that, it's about loyalties among you. Trump wants US military to get paid even with the federal government shutdown. [1] Like your executive fearing mercenaries changing their mind, instead of household troops staying in place when the pay chest takes a bit to show up.

PS: Sorry guys, you fucked up. Hard. And by extension fucked everyone else, so expect no sympathies. We will be busy with the new boss, while trying to keep our democracies not going to crap too. New boss, worse boss than old boss.

"They pass more time with this! They like it a lot! Engagement achieved!!!11one11eleven" said the developer.

"Why is this slower? Why do I have to burn time massaging the interface instead of doing it fast and continuing with my life? What a waste..." said the user.

Over the last two decades "the user is the product, milking machines to 110%!!!" has leaked all over the computing world, infecting where the user is (and will be forever, let's hope) the user.

Found images that could match the everything one, Trump Was Right About Everything! Funny to see when he has contradicted himself, for example releasing Epstein file or throwing it away.

Only missing the black hat.

I wanted to see it too... o_O

Can someone figure the other hats? Gulf of America, USA, 4 More Years, Make America Great Again, but the one top center is hard to read, something with Everything? Trump Will Fight About Everything? The black one top right is even harder.

Re:Fight Chat Control on Monday August 11, 2025 @06:33AM (#44862725)
Yes, many sites already have it, RTA is nearly 3 decades old. It seems new proposed laws always ignore such systems are not just a theory but in a reality in use.

What happens over and over only reinforces they idea that they really want "everyone, empty your pockets and show your papers, NOW!" laws and just hide it with "it's the only way, trust us; for the children!". A pretty telling proof is they want to be exempt.

Re:Fight Chat Control on Monday August 11, 2025 @05:27AM (#44862314)
Upper class could completly turn off their telescreens, meaning they have partial exemptions at least. For middle class they were always on. Proles had no telescreen because they were considered to lack brains. Even the Party had levels, Inner and Outer, with different rules.

1984 would be incomplete without the hypocrisy of "rules for thee not for me".

Re:Fight Chat Control on Monday August 11, 2025 @04:53AM (#44862078)
We already have standards:

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

What seem to lack is the will power to use them. Or after seeing in the linked site:

*EU politicians exempt themselves from this surveillance under "professional secrecy" rules. They get privacy. You and your family do not. Demand fairness.
they really want mass surveillance for the plebs even by creating a weak point for enemies. To hell not just with rights but also defence. So any excuse will do.
Guardians of minors are responsible for what they view, as well as what they drink or breathe. So they should make sure their devices are configured properly, same way they make sure there is no alcohol or tobacco intake.

Then we have systems like:

PICS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platform_for_Internet_Content_...

POWDER https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol_for_Web_Description_R...

ASACP/RTA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Sites_Advocatin...

Proving we do not need a system prone to PII leaks, just collaboration between content providers and guardians, helped by OS & browser vendors.

But it seems restricting minors is a side effect, at best, of the on going theatre.

> ... but no. The causes of the Butlerian Jihad are forgotten (or, at least, never mentioned) in any of Frank Herbert's novels; all that's remembered is the outcome.

Per Wikipedia or Goodreads, God Emperor of Dune has "The target of the Jihad was a machine-attitude as much as the machines...Humans had set those machines to usurp our sense of beauty, our necessary selfdom out of which we make living judgments. Naturally, the machines were destroyed."

Vague but pointing to dependence on machines as well as some humans being responsible for that situation.

"logically, necessarily" as Marc Andreessen says? https://futurism.com/the-byte/ai-investor-goal-crash-human-w...

Now if they could also crash factors like material, energy and profit... consumers could pay pennies using their centinaire incomes.

Re:A Nobel Prize winner's brilliant tirade against mortality on Saturday August 10, 2024 @05:21AM (#41208311)
Thanks to their power, their decisions affect many. Those decisions are taken sometimes blindly, even if they could pay for good advice, sometimes knowing it's only for own benefit in short term at the expense of the rest. In the later case, they have knowledge, but decide to act anyway, as long term they will be dead. Any bad or good decision by a poor nobody will have a lot less impact.

Iain M. Banks probably said it best. "I mean, your society's broken, so who should we blame?"

Re:A Nobel Prize winner's brilliant tirade against mortality on Thursday August 08, 2024 @05:21PM (#41196431)
The elite will finally meet the long term consequences of their past and present decisions.

It will be an spectacle: the true test of how useful wealth is against the Universe, compared to other things like knowledge or wisdom.

Current Xorg has Glamor, using OpenGL to accelerate the 2D ops of X11. There is also Zink, OpenGL-over-Vulkan for the rare case of Vulkan without native OpenGL.

OTOH, there are people willing to add support for old hardware that probably can't run Vulkan, or even OpenGL, and sometimes they manage to upstream that code. With your "bsder" nick, the following example seems relevant.

https://blog.netbsd.org/tnf/entry/x_org_on_netbsd_the [search "PowerPC"]

Some old X11 coders still work on it, or make suggestions to improve it.

https://lists.x.org/archives/xorg/2024-April/061644.html

https://keithp.com/x-ideas/

But such initiatives lack the "new shiny bling" factor, which seems to be a must nowadays to be a "success". It's the curse of "mostly done, mostly maintenance" projects in a world where breaking ground looks better in a CV than polishing and oiling the machinery others crafted.

For improved security with X11, try firejail+Xpra, or Qubes OS. They will not only help in the graphical front, but also others like processes and storage.
> And because the X11 maintainers decided that Wayland is the way forward and X11 will simply not get new display features like HDR.

Is Wayland a racket? Barely maintain the previous code instead of making clear that others should take it over because you are insterested in something else, then force everyone into your new incomplete code base, and probably bill for the reimplementation of basic capabilities, piece by piece.

OTOH, not everyone involved with X11 thinks it has no future. Keith Packard posted ideas [0] about how to improve it further.

That would be right in a world where Corporations do no collaborate with the State, or lobby the State to get the laws they want.

In our world, State and Corporations are too friendly to each other.
