Re:Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26 on Saturday October 11, 2025 @03:15PM (#45551843)
I'm newer to iOS (first iPhone was 15 pro) and macOS (M2 Air) so have tried to keep an open mind - only excessively irritating bugs will get me back to android and windows, as the back and forth transition is a soft barrier.

So far, accessing Safari tabs to close takes an extra tap, but that's counteracted somewhat by the New tab / private tab options. And keyboard doesn't pop up consistently when replying to emails in Outlook. Might be related to SwiftKey or just a bug in that app. Aside from that I'm pretty happy with the ux.

Second hand as in used from this generation? Or second generation? I can't wait for windows on arm to finally fully get there.

> try and prevent

Yeah, good luck with that. If there's one thing remote teaching during covid taught me it's that you can't stop someone from cheating during an online assessment.

I was seriously considering an m3 pro for the space black color until I confirmed it wasn't passively cooled. An extra monitor would be nice at work but the air is just too great as a laptop.
Same here. 15 pro max and all is smooth sailing. Worst I had it was tethered to a laptop running zoom and a pc running another zoom with the phone charging. It had to stop charging at 80% for thermal protection.

When the biggest complaints about a device are like this I feel good about the purchase.

Re:Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates on Monday September 25, 2023 @05:26PM (#37650895)
I just switched over to IPhone after a solid three years on a Pixel 4a 5g and am having some adjustment pains with iOS related to lack of these features. Live transcription is another super useful feature I truly value during long, annoying calls with call menu options (IRS, hospitals, etc), since it is so helpful to see what the previous options were without having to listen to the entire damn menu again.

Then there are small annoyances like not having the option to enable auto-space after punctuation like commas and periods in messages, even with third-party keyboards like swift keybaord. And not being able to set a separate ringer and alarm volume. I keep my ringer volume very low during the day, but I depend on a loud alarm. Got to work late today as a consequence of this!

I'm already considering switching back to pixel 8 once it releases next month, especially due to the increased support. Only thing holding me back is tensor chips not yet being on par until around 2025 when Google releases its first fully custom chip.

Ah, yes, the renowned bz4x, or busy forks for the initiated.
Everything here is accurate. I still chose an EV because I can deal with the caveats, but this helps clarify to me why others wouldn't want to bother. This doesn't even mention access to charging; much easier for homeowners to justify an EV.

One thing though:

> You shouldn't charge above 85-90% to avoid going against recommendations

Daily driving this doesn't matter much. Longer drives you can charge to 100% as long as you depart within a reasonable time frame of say within 6 hours, probably longer. More annoying is the charging curve after 80% at fast charging stations. In my experience you usually won't want to spend the time to get that last 20% unless absolutely necessary.

I like walled garden. Everything appears nice and flowery except for the fact they want to hold you in. You can admire its beauty but can't really trust anything in it due to its darker purpose. Reminds me of the Stepford Wives.

What is that called, an ironic phrase?

Never Combine and Only Combine when Full. Two missing features that were literally keeping me from upgrading to 11.

Either mistook the photo of Napoleon Chagnon as the author or has a very dry sense of humor. Too bad it wasn't the latter.
Hear, hear. M2 MBA 16/512GB here after buying Thinkpads exclusively since 2010 and even modding to get 51NB X62 and T70 boards installed into X61 and T61 Thinkpads. The mba wipes the floor with them all and I wish it was close. I want to go back to my trackpoint but don't want to deal with the fan noise, heat, battery life, or battery loss while suspended.
Re:Apple GPU drivers now in Asahi Linux on Wednesday December 07, 2022 @06:04PM (#33901657)
I've been a diehard Thinkpad user for over a decade now (X201 my first back in 2010). Apple M2 Air is on another level despite not having a trackpoint. Just to add to your list: the aluminum shell feels nice too. Paired with the cpu it just never heats up, which used to be a drawback by acting as a big heat sink.
The X1 Nano is my dream device with the form factor, keyboard, trackpoint, and 16:10 hd+ ips display all rolled into an incredibly portable package. I used mine from gen 1 release until this summer. I now have an m2 macbook air as daily driver because of hardware and power efficiency / optimization / integration and fanless design.

One day I hope Lenovo will figure it out, and I'll easily leave the macbook behind.

Re:Split keyboards and how to build them on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @12:04AM (#25924517)
I regularly transition from Thinkpad/laptop and 60-75% standard boards to a 60% split Ultimate Hacking Keyboard, 40% ortholinear planck, and split planck (Let's Split). The only thing that ever messed me up was using split spacebars, where one thumb maps to something besides space. I end up being confused when my less dominant thumb doesn't activate the keypress on a regular spacebar. :\ Hard to overcome the muscle memory, so I've sworn off of split spacebars unless I change all my boards to split space. Which is impossible for laptops.

Aside from that, transitioning takes no more than half a minute for it to feel natural again.

If they no longer plan to sell or update the software, I wonder what's to stop them from open sourcing it if asked.

Re:When 13.3 is greater than 14 on Friday November 13, 2020 @04:09PM (#25087536)
Well today I learned. I always thought they called it 4K because doubling the dimensions of a rectangle causes the area to quadruple. No wonder "2K" display resolutions confuse me...
Re:When 13.3 is greater than 14 on Friday November 13, 2020 @04:04PM (#25087476)
I suspect it's due to competing with the Dell XPS 17 2020. I prefer Thinkpad due to their keyboards and I am a trackpoint user, but if I really needed 16:10 then I would get something from Dell's XPS line. With the LG I'd be taking a risk with ergonomics such as the keyboard and trackpad, whereas I know what the XPS feels like.
Re:When Math Gets Impossibly Hard on Wednesday September 16, 2020 @03:45PM (#24496780)
That's part of what makes it such a rich subject. Even something as simple as writing y=sin(x) has so much more embedded into it than the "input x output y" notion of functions. Parametrization of the Unit Circle, right triangles, special angles, you name it. Diving into the rabbit hole enough to convince yourself the step is justified is part of the learning process, if you're engaging with it properly. You do need to be judicious sometimes with what you decide is important to dive further into. That comes with the context/goals and experience of the reader.
Not to mention the "old 'bento box' models where the screen release lock also allows you to lift up the keyboard to access all of the internals."

>I can't really stay productive on anything less than 15".

Agreed. Without a dock/external monitor 13" and 14" are really not the sizes one should focus on for productivity, except in short bursts. 16:10 really makes an impact on displays smaller than 17". It took serious justification for me to give up the XPS 13" 16:10 display in favor of a 16:9 14" laptop. I absolutely would not have chosen a 13" 16:9 display because of how big of a net loss it is.

I've been able to make the adjustment by buying something with a slightly larger display. A 13" 16:10 display is comparable to 14" 16:9. At 1080p/1200p you lose some vertical pixels and a very tiny amount of physical vertical length, but you gain horizontal pixels and length, along with potentially more ports.

This was my recent experience choosing between a new XPS 13 or a T14s amd. Side by side the screens weren't that different. Port selection, keyboard quality, and trackpoint availability were the tiebreakers in favor of the Thinkpad. (Didn't care much about the performance difference due to my light use case.)

Here, here! I love Xubuntu. Of all the lighter flavors like Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Mint/xfce, Xubuntu has been the one I had the best experience setting up for others on old thinkpads. And lately my go-to distro.
Re:Ask HN: Smallest laptop that is decent for coding? on Tuesday March 24, 2020 @06:57AM (#22673743)
Oof! 16:10 display in a 13" chassis is tough to beat. Those extra vertical pixels make coding on it that much nicer. Way to go Dell! If only I could get 16:10 in a ThinkPad; I'm a sucker for their keyboards and trackpoint.
Re:Not all young people are ‘digital natives’ on Saturday March 14, 2020 @04:18PM (#22578319)
I'm under 35 and consider myself very 'digitally native'. It wasn't until I helped my 19 year old niece set up her laptop that I realized exactly the same thing. They're fine with youtube and spotify from a tablet or phone. She could pick things up fairly quickly for school assignments (Office, etc.). I think it was her hunt-and-peck typing that made me realize my assumptions were off. (I don't think typing classes in middle and high school are much of a thing anymore in my region.)
