Indeed:

"I want to start programming, what language should I learn?"

"One of these two most popular languages, where you will not even know about basic errors until you run the code!"

A lot of confusion there, so let me chime in and clarify:

1. The war is not an inconvenience, it's a disaster.

2. You had at least 1 year to move elsewhere.

I know another one: "Don't be evil!" wink-wink!
Re:All the hominins made tools on Sunday December 03, 2023 @03:14PM (#38510343)
Developers I have met rarely if ever make tools... Maybe they are more like cache-making rodents?
For developers it's best to focus on top 5 tech companies that everyone else mimics.
Finally, the actual AAMMG, not some weird companies.
Re:Project Valhalla: A look inside Java's epic refactor on Sunday December 03, 2023 @10:35AM (#38507787)
Why not abandon the entire thing?
Yes, but pre-hype. Open AI will interview you like they did not interview their buddies who got in early. So I've heard.
Are there any start ups that are like charities founded to achieve something obviously monetizable and backed by multiple billionaires?
I guess if mechanics were not people, private equity would buy them all.

Left-wing populists unfortunately cornered themselves into not being able to discuss illegal immigration like adults.

That thing requires registration.

Realistically, he cannot contact all the thousands of content creators. Also I doubt that UG is paying them in any case. He should include author nicknames though.

Hopefully, bro scraped the content in case UG bans him. There will not be good electric guitar music past 2010s anyway, so no missing out on new content...

Re:Ask HN: Is Knuth's TAOCP worth the time and effort? (2023) on Tuesday November 28, 2023 @04:20AM (#38443945)
Maybe people are still in a denial that all companies want is some LeetCode and funny scripting languages.
Plus, an average-looking dude in the 90s had a chance regardless.
> But many women have commented that they find the "attractive" guy's compliments also unwanted.

Pay attention to what they do, not what they say.

Re:Generative AI for Beginners on Friday November 24, 2023 @03:01PM (#38407605)
Indeed it is. You are a true master of self-referencing phrases!
Re:Generative AI for Beginners on Friday November 24, 2023 @02:56PM (#38407557)
You give it to intern and report to higher ups that there is now "Generative AI" used in your company. Higher ups tell their friends while golfing. Everyone is happy, until their entire industry gets disrupted by actual AI specialists.

Isn't this merely teaching how to be a script/prompt monkey?

Did you pass the Azure ones then?

> We also didn't follow engineering best practices for the first few years. For example we wrote no tests...

Tests are not a best practice but more of a necessary evil for production systems and/or businesses incapable of retaining their best for many years.

I think Pichai tries his best within his abilities, maybe it's time to pay attention to the ones who had chosen him?
Re:EP–133 on Wednesday November 22, 2023 @11:47AM (#38381614)
Nothing to write home about in 2024:

* stereo / mono sampling at 46.875 kHz / 16-bit

* 24-bit ADC / DAC

A lot of old things from 90s are still going surprisingly strong - Python, JavaScript, Java etc.
> Passion vs greed.

In a city where a normal person cannot buy a house and employer wants 25% office time? Give me a break, they just want to live like people could in 1950s.

Re:Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock on Sunday November 19, 2023 @02:12PM (#38336565)
Two options are acceptable for me personally:

1) "Crediting" the source models explicitly.

2) Generating away or cleaning up afterwards: incorrect spelling, hands with unnatural fingers, non-sensical devices/symbols etc.

Re:Terraform Cloud Pricing Changes Sticker Shock on Sunday November 19, 2023 @02:09PM (#38336524)
Usually people "credit" the source model in a label underneath each image or in front of a text.
