Think about inflation increasing at 3% annually on average, with no accompanying deflation, and with no accompanying increases in wages for most of the population.

A dollar is presently worth half as much as in 1990. A 100,000 a year job in 1990 is equivalent to a 50,000 a year nowdays.

Every year the noose gets slightly tighter, the slack is slightly reduced, the competition is slightly increased, society become slightly more cutthroat, people are forced to do slightly crazier and crazier things to make ends meet and sacrifice their morals just a little bit more, work just a few more hours to make the same money.

Then new generations are born into a world that's much more competitive than their parents world 20 years previous, and start out thinking this level of competitiveness and craziness is normal.

And the water in the frog pot inter-generationally continues to get hotter.

We're literally on a slow unstoppable pathway to a third world country and no one even realizes it.

Or possibly creating the conditions for war.

A dog.

Overall for around 100 bucks a month in food/trifexis the value a dog brings to your life is massive.

People will constantly talk to you so youre socializing.

There's a creature that loves you unconditionally which is a really cool feeling.

Theyre a ton of fun so it's hard to be bored.

They're good for getting exercise as they always want to play.

And more.

Theres studies that say owning a dog increases your lifespan as well.

Is this just like a limited Google? At what point does it make sense to just Google things? I typically can find almost anything I need on Google. I guess there's a benefit to curation which I use bookmarks for.
Airflow follows the path of least resistance. Air and the particles in it will go around the edges of the mask where there is zero resistance.
Re:Ask HN: What is the cheapest way to make a website? on Tuesday June 02, 2020 @08:50PM (#23398420)
Namecheap WordPress hosting.

3 bucks a month and they handle scaling and all that shit for you supposedly.

It's not free but you get a way more functionality than a static site offers.

VueJs/Reactjs for the front end.

PostgREST or Serverless framework for the backend.

Avoid middle ware all together!

Haha very good point! I would barely feel comfortable about a regular business card.

Completely agree. Walking around San Fran the lack of public restrooms and reticence of shopowners to let you use their private restroom made me want to poop on the street.

Santa Monica had a bunch of public restrooms and you NEVER see poop on the street like on San Fran.

Re:Trunk-Based Development on Sunday January 29, 2017 @01:20PM (#13515686)
I like this best.

It enables you to build your feature and then squash the commits into one idempotent feature commit which keeps commit clutter out of the git logs.

Just keeping your branch rebased daily, one will have minimal problems even on big teams.

I personally love developing on my own branch and having the freedom to experiment without messing stuff up.

I mean yeah but this is javascript. Only 3 phases of transpilation is for noobs.

brainfuck->typescript->es6->via babel->es5->postCss plugins->sass->css->transpiled to react components->transpiled to an Angular 2 project->to webcomponents->transpiled to ArnoldC language->transpiled to a Turing complete Shopify liquid template-> commonjs and browserified->rails sprocket pipeline->then piped to /dev/null

It's not easy being a Javascript Ninja/Rockstar.

Once you commit years of education to a particular field and years of worktime and experience the 'momentum' of your direction in life can get pretty hard to shift.

You passion for being a veterinarian turns to 'just a job'.

I agree with this article and love it but take it one step further.

I think doing 'what you love' is a failed premise for several reasons.

a>When you turn your passion into a job your passion becomes a job.

b>You only 'think' you love it. Your social circles have conditioned you to love a certain subject. An inner city kid is going to be more likely interested in the NBA and Rapping, than social media and solar power. Just like the average person from the middle east will be more interested in Islam than the average person from the South. (Stereotypes can be proven by statistics.)

c>You will change. As you get older think of all the new things you've fallen in love with. New passions. New interests. And the things you have fallen out of love with. I'm not convinced people are static enough to love 'one thing' for 40 years.

I think what people really want out of a career is freedom. Intellectual freedom, freedom to manage their time, prestige, respect, expertise, etc.

I think these are the things one should be pursuing instead of doing 'what you love'.

Re:Why women lose the dating game on Saturday October 26, 2013 @03:34PM (#6618876)
Chastity? What planet are you on?

LOOKS ARE WHY WOMEN WEAR MAKEUP and mini skirts. If chastity were their test they would be doing exactly the opposite.

You're not getting turned on by porn because the woman is 'chaste'. You're getting turned on becuase she is HOT.

Looks, indicate fertility and health, and are widely know through out all of biology and the animal kingdom to be used by males to select fit mates no matter slutty and how many litters of animals the female has had. It indicates genetic fitness.

For men success is the test. It indicates accumulation of resources and ability to survive.

Plus, sex is a powerful primitive desire and no (matter what they tell you) they're all "bicycles" as you describe it, just like you would LIKE to be.

If mens test is success, the women's test is her looks.

And attractive young girls are men's equivalent of the rich handsome finance studs.

If we're going to allow men to be selected for we also have to allow women to be selected for.

In the spirit of honest natural selection leaving your sagging wife and marrying your young secretary is good for humanity as a whole.
