Plants do all these things too, hard to call them sentient.
I feel people have forgotten how aggressively Google push chrome in the early days. Using Adware distribution tactics, where if you forgot to uncheck a box, while installing some free app, you'd end up with Chrome installed.
Why does AI need to be involved in such a migration. The original game was made by one guy. Its a small team with a deep understanding of their project, it seems counter intuitive to outsource this to AI.
Reading Jurrasic Park, it as bit of fun hearing of how the island purchased multiple Cray super computer to help with genetic research. Fun even if its a bit of fiction.

Sure, open models will definitely be an alternative once the frontier models hike prices to match costs. But that will be a minority, and people will start to switch, but people use the frontier models for a reason and these AI labs will extort that, once the easy investor money dries up.

All LLM are heavily subsidized by investors. No one is paying the true cost of tokens at the moment. The rug pull is to get as many people defendant on the tool before they have to massively increase prices.
Considering the reach of a HAM radio, the limited frequencies, and the consumption of airtime while transmitting, someone needs to enforce etiquette.

Its also likely the older folk operating in HAM radio space, have a background in communication operations when HAM was a far more common communication device.

HAM is still awesome, I find it very interesting with the long distance, remote, communication challenges some people partake in.

The network was basically point to point serial, with a phone number for routing.

Some BBS hosts were quite sophisticated, running multiple computers and banks of modems to handle multiple user connections.

Re:Pirating the Pirates on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @02:37AM (#49889081)
Even GOG has some oddities were the available copy is not the original experience. My recent experience of trying to play the original Mafia game. Booting it up a GoG copy, I found that there was no music while driving (a core memory of my original play through). This music has been removed... This also affected small radios you'd find playing music, they now dead.

It really took away from the game experience

I ended up scratching out my original CD copy of the game, installing version 1.0 of the game. It had all the music and better visuals

The patches removed visual features for performance, not GoG's fault here, not sure why GoG hosts an inferior version, its quite a downgrade. The music removal I do not understand.

(This all was particually obvious in an early mission, where you have to beat up some parked cars with baseball bats, the patched version show minimal dents and zero scratches, and the radio sitting in the corner make no sound. This completely changes in the V1.0 copy, so much more atmosphere)

Re:Raspberry Pi 5 EEPROM update now blocks manual RAM upgrades on Monday September 21, 2026 @05:32AM (#49785059)
Raspi is likely going to continue making moves like this, since they have gone public. You can't just have people buying the cheaper 1GiB boards and upgrading them to 4GiB, that's taking potential profits away from the investors...

I doubt many are doing this upgrade, and I think its awesome someone has the tooling & skill to do so. I cannot fathom how this is a threat to RPI. I would assume a community firmware patch will likely release & resolve the limitation (until it becomes a signed binary)

Break up the multi trillion, multifaceted companies into the their separate facets. These companies all thrived on far significant smaller portfolios in the past. Cap the size a company can grow. Regulate the amount of compute they are allowed to use.
Re:I resigned from Anthropic today (Jacob Coxon) on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @10:09AM (#49626891)
Considering we cannot keep up with energy demands, and fuel costs are increasing drastically, while data centers are partially powered by diesel generator fleets, due to electrical infrastructure limitations. Are these companies even going to be alive in the next 5-10 years? So much of this is being floated by investor money, with customer revenue way below threshold.

The more the models dog food the internet, the wackier they will get, with the amount of slop being created at this point in time.

Let not forget that google heavily relies on opensource software. The Linux kernel being the obvious one in this discussion, which they make extensive use of.
Re:How an AI Anime Is Created on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @07:20AM (#49004967)
Considering how similar the output of a model is, artists are going to still have to do most of the work, if they want a style over the template the model is trained on.

Artists also enjoy creating and the process of creation.

Re:How an AI Anime Is Created on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @07:11AM (#49004867)
This does not look good. The animation is weird. Why does it look like they do a few small frames of motion, then a hard stop to create the low FPS feel of anime. It feels really off. Anime already has an issue of low effort production, I'd argue there is an over saturation at the moment. AI isn't going to help tell a new or better story, but it will help churn out mediocre content faster.
Increasing the cooling setpoint of the system isn't exactly a new concept, nor is data centre scale water cooling. Computers can run hot and not throttle. Water is better at moving heat than air. Temperature delta above ambient increase the amount of heat that can be removed, with less mechanical assistance. How exactly is any of this news.

Re:Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users on Thursday June 18, 2026 @05:57AM (#48583129)
VW needs to go back to building simple, reasonably priced cars that are easy to service. Chasing the premium/luxury car brands, while they own both premium and luxury brands, is doing them in.
Consider Asahi Linux limited feature support for the M1, after all these years, this is not going to ever happen. Its not like Apple has every shown any interest in opening their hardware up to 3rd party OS support and nor will they.
Some games anti-cheat will detect you running in a virtual machine and kick you. I particularly ran into the with Rust's anti cheat, after a friend convinced me to join them.
Funerals are a big thing in South Africa. It can be often to the same level as a wedding, where families will take out loans to host the event. Hence the funeral insurance being common. You go to an ATM and get advertised Funeral Cover, offered by your bank.
Re:John Deere to pay $99M in right-to-repair settlement on Thursday April 09, 2026 @05:54AM (#47701448)
Self-repair is an average day on a farm. A farmer that does not research equipment they about to purchase, especially before spending a small fortune, is a fool.

That's like saying you don't bother learning what illnesses your animals or crops may contract, and how to prevent/cure them, because you're not wealthy. Buying a book and reading it, to the improve your abilities, is time well spent.

Most maintenance on a tractor is not major, and require basic skill and parts. It's the companies that don't want this, they want specialized technicians to come out to replace an oil filter.

I have a 30 year old vacuum cleaner, which I continue to maintain, which mostly amounts to stripping it once every 10 years and cleaning out all the filters that caked up with fine dust. Definitely cheaper to strip it myself one evening, than to pay someone to do it, or purchase a new one. It is like an hour of work for years of service.

Re:John Deere to pay $99M in right-to-repair settlement on Thursday April 09, 2026 @05:38AM (#47701341)
It surprised me that farmers aren't just ditching John Deere for alternatives that respect them. Visiting family on their farm in the early 2000's, they had been selling off their John Deere tractors and replacing them with Massey Ferguson, because they were annoyed with the poor servicing and parts delivery they had with their local shop/dealership. Way before this right to repair stuff happened.
Re:Every GPU That Mattered on Wednesday April 08, 2026 @05:17AM (#47687505)
Considering they list multiple version of the same generation of card, like the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080TI. This list is just a list of popular cards over the last 30 years
What is the actual objective of this, is it solving an issue or creating a solution to a problem, that is still to be determined? It seems like a lot of energy to replicate a lidar mapping system. It's not like you can expect accurate dimensions from this approximate guess work, excluding the expected hallucinations adding to inaccuracy.
Re:Keep Android Open on Wednesday October 29, 2025 @04:17AM (#45744083)
I'm not sure about the NewPipe angle, as Grey Jay exists (Backed by FUTO/Louis Rossman) on the Play store, which has ad-block and sponsor block incorporated into it. Google is just being malicious towards opensource and privacy, under the guise of security
The game does have a mature rating, so parents should be vetting their activity.

I would still contend and say the gambling aspect, with real money, is a net negative to the community.

This is the exact channel that came to mind when I saw the headline, his work is fantastic.
It makes the argument of the open internet being unable to function without advertising, quite hard to prop up. Especially when over 70% of traffic if just people gaming the system, to real users detriment.
