Whatever. This place is pretty much just a venture capital circle jerk now anyway.
> As a huge music fan, how do I sort through all the noise to find a truly good band, and not some guy programming the guitars, drums tracks and bass and then does the vocals himself?

Eh? Do you mean you don't like it unless you know the band is full of good instrumentalists or that you find too much stuff that's not done well?

They should be shot at before they're allowed to shoot anyone, for sure.
Re:Millennial Employees Confound Big Banks on Saturday April 09, 2016 @11:27PM (#11464741)
Hahahaahahaha, what a bunch of horseshit. Here's what's really happening (or rather, what's not happening): Wall Street's pay grade model has turned into "Jump ship or get fucked".

So people jump ship. End of story. Banks don't want to give people raises, so they leave after a period of time for a new position that does give them a raise.

Pretty much every firm does it.

Re:Zika Is Coming on Saturday April 09, 2016 @05:01PM (#11463305)
Because health agencies pour tons of work and money into preventing their spread before the next major disease can hit us.

Or would you rather a modern Spanish flu pandemic kill half a billion people?

Re:Jeff Bezos’ letter to shareholders on Friday April 08, 2016 @08:25AM (#11454100)
nah dog, Apple has said they are free to make an Apple TV app. But they won't for some reason. They don't even have to sell items through the app and incur Apple's cut.

They're just shitstains

That you can actually stand up for yourself and make a difference.
Re:Massachusetts Right to Repair Initiative on Tuesday April 05, 2016 @12:59PM (#11432120)
Yeah, but how does he check that on a walkaround?
Re:Massachusetts Right to Repair Initiative on Tuesday April 05, 2016 @09:03AM (#11429998)
Can you explain what you mean by checking your brake pads?
Yeah. It's because we've been given sugary shit en masse for decades. It's like asking someone addicted to heroin if they would like to stop doing heroin.

Anyway, the rise of Greek yogurt at least shows that this isn't 100% true. It does need a little sugar for me to find it palatable as breakfast, but like, we're talking 2 or 3 sliced strawberries or a handful of blueberries.

Well, you gotta grow the next generation of terrorists, don't you?
Re:Cross-platform Rust rewrite of the GNU coreutils on Tuesday March 22, 2016 @06:35PM (#11340474)
In the case of Rust I don't believe this is 100% true given C ABI compatibility. You could start rewriting in such a way that it is integrated with the existing code and slowly, but surely tease the C out of the system.
Yeah, but if organ replacement becomes something we can routinely do to extend lifespans, then eventually you run out of cadavers.

That's probably a bit far-flung in terms of thinking though.

Wonder if they could use human stem cells on a matrix from a pig heart or something.
Re:AIs Have Mastered Chess. Will Go Be Next? (2014) on Tuesday March 15, 2016 @05:06PM (#11292999)
Why on earth would the phone be running the chess engine 24/7 ? It only has to run the engine when it needs to select its next move.
What a disjointed story. I am not sure what the things it wanted to tell me were. It presented like4 or 5 unrelated high concept points but they didn't tie together meaningfully.
Re:Lee Sedol Beats AlphaGo in Game 4 on Sunday March 13, 2016 @12:42PM (#11278274)
If he had made a dumb move and AlphaGo capitalized on it we would be talking about how the AI goaded him into a sense of safety.
It'll have to work like the last story in I, Robot.

Could be a psychology paper.
> The Nazis are also the bad guys. Even though you are the Nazis' enemy, you are not the bad guy. The bad guys are the ones murdering millions.

The Nazi perspective was that Jews were destroying their race and stealing their birthright.

From our perspective, that is, of course, idiotic. But idiots don't see it that way.

I'm in Gen Y. My biggest fear is that an ecological disaster will kill half of the humans alive and society will regress to feudalism.

Which I would actually consider worse than a nuclear wasteland in some significant ways.

So assuming we significantly enhance a person'a knowledge and senses, we can make them rational in one specific scenario.

We'll have our spherical cows god damnit!

Now, we just need to work on putting computers in front of every other human decision making process and we can finally have homo economicus.

Re:Systemd vs. Docker on Thursday March 03, 2016 @11:53AM (#11218094)
That is literally not at all what that is suggesting.
Re:Things to avoid in Docker containers on Tuesday March 01, 2016 @10:12AM (#11203054)
Can you speak to the security implications of building the container as a remapped root and running as a user?

My understanding is that the most important reason to have root in the container is to install software through the standard measures, but obviously, we don't want to have to run our build process for containers as root on the real host.

Given the comparatively restricted behavior, is this a good practice or are there implications of using a remapped root during container build time that would linger on to run time?

Re:The Most Dangerous Writing App on Monday February 29, 2016 @03:39PM (#11198281)
Would a better variant be to kill the buffer if you actually moved focus from the text area? That way you can pause and think without losing flow, but there's still the threat that if you choose to distract yourself, there are consequences.

The 5 second thing can just halt the timer. So you have to actually spend 5 minutes writing, more or less.

> But my lizard brain tells me that I'm putting my life in the hands of a machine that potentially has bugs, and that's a little scary.

> Most of us are going to expect nothing short of perfection from these machines to really trust them.

I am not sure if this is satire or oblivion.

Re:Silicon Valley is broken and heading for social unrest on Sunday February 28, 2016 @12:30PM (#11191484)
The two biggest issues that San Francisco faces are housing and transportation. You say that they would be accused of influencing local politics, but I am reasonably sure that busting the building height cap and using money to get better mass transit options would be viewed very favorably by all but a few of the NIMBYest citizens.

In any case, the fundamental underlying problem is that tech has created a monotonous economy in the Bay. No locality that has one has good economics for citizens.

This seems like something that is a really good idea, but is hard to find any projects for it.
