Robot on a stick doesn't do alot. I speak from experience using a telepresence robot at work to interact with my boss. It's basically a walking tablet that can't really navigate because it's wrapped in a consumer toy grade vehicle system to meet price point. Just pay an intern to hold a phone up and walk around. I agree that telepresence is the future of remote work, and by work I mean physically moving atoms around not just using social media to exchange information. The trick is creating reliable and efficient robotic systems that are actually suitable to the types of work needed. Thats not so easy and why I work in robotics. Lots of problems to solve.
Let's be real. It wouldn't be that surprising given how the world actually works. Assuming you aren't an oligarch.
Surprisingly progressive. This is because they don't have debtors prison?
Hey just a reminder the state is here to control you and protect property nothing more nothing less.
Lets just say "problem solvers" and avoid the semantics. Problem solving is abstract reasoning. It requires flow state.
Yeah. Feminism. Thrasher's bro boarding King of Road machismo is going to get old really fast. The moment someone starts a feminism skate mag I'll be all about it.
I'm really excited about Godot. I started using it and saw the limits of the 3d stuff that is there right now but I'm excited to start using it when really good 3d animation libraries become available which seem to be lacking at the moment.
I agree, the Clathrate Gun is firing right now. So we're probably going on the Big Temperature Roller Coaster Ride anyway. So in that sense carbon neutral is probably okay in the long run if we all survive right?
I agree. This is clearly how science should be done for the benefit of humanity. Closed access journals are the "property is theft" of scholarship. Being able to read papers and engage directly with the material is how innovation will happen. If not SciHub then someone else. It was and is just too important of a service not to be the new status quou.
Do you think we asked the colleges to turn us into profit centers? College costs have gone up because bureuacracy has bloated. By the times undergrads figure it out it's too late. If you actually went to school to study and ended up in insane amounts of debt (like I did) you wish you hadn't gone even though you were happy to have learned what you did. It's a shitty double edged sword.
Not everyone can get scholarships and school isn't easy/cheap enough to make paying for it an option by working through school. Not if you want a real job after school.
Frankly it should be free. Why are you charging people to better themselves and their surroundings. It's obscene that we charge people for healthcare and schools.
The United States is a corporate neocon fantasy world. Low taxes for the rich, student loans for all.
I'm offended by your complaints. See how quickly this gets out of hand.
This whole comment reads like PLA astroturf.
Oh man I forgot about Planetside 2! Super underrated, it came out in a huge FPS glut in the market. I dig huge combined arms stuff but man I used to die to snipers in that game so much haha.
Even specifies "Uber" Eats. That's a CEO right there.
Anybody who is interested in the numbers on this should checkout the work being done at drawdown.org. Afforestation is ranked #15 out of a list of solutions to reduce the carbon content of our atmosphere and reduce global warming. They have models and data if you want.

So every physical pen tester I know is a woman. Coincidence? Maybe....
I think a lot of the commentary on Juicero misses the real skeleton in the closet.
The product was designed to specifically to justify the business model of the DRM pulp packets and thus MRR for the purpose of revenue and growth. Everything about it looks like they designed the packets and juice pulp DRM features first, then backfilled the rest of the mechanical design to support the REAL features (keeping people buying your fruit packages) and not the FAKE features (juicing?).
Many people talk about the ring roller/ toothpaste squeezer method being easier. Of course! But how do you do DRM with that? It's trickier. How do you scan the barcode and also keep your customers from using off brand K-Cups, I'm sorry I mean, fruit pulp packets.
It's obvious for $800 they could have designed an amazing conventional juicer, which actually would be a better product. But how do you get monthly recurring revenue out of that and thus justification for raising millions in venture capitalist money?
Juicero is a great example of dark hardware design and a cautionary tail about the hubris of the "if you build it" risk management strategy.
I guess you like eating apples that taste like wood chips then. Organic is how farmers have been doing it for 10,000+ years of farming, the in-organic kind was invented in the last century by RoundUp and MiracleGro and friends. Pouring industrially produced chemicals into fields of neatly rowed (and erosion prone) staple monocrops is a recipe for failure and more dustbowls and global nutrient debt. Please don't sell organic farming down the river it's going to save us all.
"cultural appropriation" is a joke. Culture IS appropriation. That's how you GET culture, is to get it from somewhere....as if white people are supposed to not embrace other things outside of their so called ancestry, which is riddled with variety and "cultural appropriation". My Norse and Germanic ancestors loved appropriating cultures and I have the genes I have today because they grabbed shiny stuff they liked. Whiny normative lefties with too much to do.
Tripling the Outlier comment. They are current the best pants on the planet and I challenge any HN commenter to show me better technical biz casual slacks. I basically only wear Outlier, Duluth Trading Co, and Uniqlo. And nice shoes.
INb4 people talk about $300 jeans.
These are jeans you only have one pair of, that you wear EVERY DAY. They are worth it but it's like buying a nice sports car or nice purse. It's the same thing. Invest in what you use all the time.
That's basically the Inventor's Curse summed up as well as could ever be.
"The inventor is always cursed to invent something that is just as difficult to explain as it is to invent."
Trees grow back, and so do forests. Let's focus on the plasticization of the oceans instead of the trees which grow in the ground. The Earth is mostly ocean and it's actually a good thing to cut down forests, it creates new opportunities for new organisms to move in and pioneer the land. North Carolina used to be a large portion of prairie called Piedmont. But the dense farming of the NC piedmont resulted in the new growth forests springing up when people moved westward and farms died. Forests grow so quickly we forget that "old growth" is like a hundred year old tree. Deforestation and reforestation is a natural cycle and it's actually not as bad as say a giant miasma of microplastic or a giant toxic algae bloom caused by agricultural run off.
You're missing the point. Currently capacitive touch interfaces require a grid of copper and an MCU. This new technique lets you add the interface to any object that will take a thin film spray, which is great! The same issues with false positive rejection from humidity and moisture and radio noise exist, but now we can add it to arbitrary objects like handles and such without busting ourselves integrating the copper loops into whatever device it is we're building. You can just spray the surface, calibrate, and go. Lots of great design space here.
Why? I think a company that sells products can just use their website, the #12 most visited website on the planet to announce it. The Steve Jobs style keynote is so gauche now, even Apple seems sort of clunky doing it. You can't do the same magic trick over and over and expect people to be into it.
Wow, this is great. So he took philosophy out of the normative, positivist, Hegelian world it was stuck in, pointlessly proving useless esoteric questions of logic, and applied it phenomenologically to the broad experience of human experience and reality. Anybody know anything I should read besides Nozick along this vein?
Agree agree. Misuse of resources is the key problem. New systems required.
Black Swan fallacy. And I never claimed to be Malthusian so please leave your tar brush at home.
Also you may note that my criticisms are aimed directly at the current broken systems under utilizing and abusing our agricultural and water resources. We absolutely have enough land and water to go around, but the way we misuse it is going to have the extraterrestrial archaeologists digging through our powdered bones and plastic wrap shaking their heads in sadness.
China's middle class will rise out of their oligarchy in the next 100 years and then you will have the largest cultural middle class cluster the world has ever seen. Then all that cheapo labor will come from somewhere else. I personally think this is irrelevant, the US doesn't need any more toxic waste dumps (a.k.a factories).
The truth is MFG is not what the US needs to be doing, the US needs to be working on automation and permanent systems design related to agriculture.
F* making some future recycling nightmare in the form of a fashion accessory and telecom unit, we need to be figuring out how to actually feed people on a massive scale without dumping phosphate and nitrates and plastics into the ocean, we need to figure out how to avoid the massive and unsustainable aforementioned supplies of chemical inputs required to sustain the BS process that is modern plow and sow automated factory farming. We need to shift the global food diet away from beef and other carbon nightmares and into more localized food sourcing.
This is going to require robots, and entirely new disciplines combining agriculture, industrial/agricultural/robotic engineering, and systems design.
Do you think anybody is going to give a shit about the iPhone 12 when half of the world is eating itself alive in the Water Wars of 2030? I doubt we will be as extravagant in our tastes when that new world order arrives.
tl;dr who gives a shit we have bigger fish to fry (or none really because they all died in toxic algae blooms)
