so an employee whose entire job is testing electrical installations violated health and safety rules and electrocuted themselves and now we should blame someone? europe does not deserve compute

Machine intelligence could drive as much transfer from labor to capital in the next decade as the previous wage-to-financial economy produced in forty years.

This will push wealth concentration in leading OECD economies beyond the inequality seen in Brazil and Mexico.

roy lee, the founder of cluely got lost his spot in harvard because he was caught "sneaking out" of a high school field trip

if you played hooky on a high school field trip in 80s or 90s you would probably not lose your college admission to harvard

this police state attitude completely sterilizes young people socially, their parents regulate behaviour and monitor people with airtags and life360

it is worth more, but you have to do 100% of the work to get 25% more upside.

Or take $5m and get no more upside and 70% less work. The "work" here is dealing with regulations, insurance companies, administration, payments, and accounting, not actually looking after dogs

the PE model is often to provide a competent regtech/administration core and then plug heaps of regulated businesses into it and centralise all the admin

imagine opening a vet in SF in 1950 in a cheap shoplot and people just paid you with hard cash or cheques in person, you wrote receipts with a biro, and filed taxes once or twice a year on a few sheets of paper... compared to now

but how to do that without protecting the content from enemy LLM companies scraping?

the biggest problem with claude is it is so negative and tells you things can't be done, are wrong, have hidden problems, etc

I run things through grok to make them positive again after claude does the main work

Re:Most tech revolutions made work worse for employees on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @08:02PM (#49176924)
There was a time when life was much simpler. We would all walk a few miles down to the 'station then have breakfast and read the 'paper while the steam smoke hung thick in the air

Then we all had to move to cars. The fire man, stations, engineers, and conductors all lost their jobs, and the commute got 10 times more intense. Now we had to drive our own cars, follow road rules, maintain our cars, and find parking

basal take, completely incorrect

the US is the most charitable country on earth as a percentage of GDP. There is so much philanthropy that the finance industry is building new businesses just to serve it

maybe like this, gary oldman 1990s would have been good. there needs to be a feeling of some edge or at least mystery, depth
Re:An Uncomplicated Man on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @04:10AM (#49080854)
"A complicated man" is a stupid translation in the first place

Polytropos means: a man of many twists and turns, describing simultaneously a person who has traveled widely and been "turned" by many hardships and places, as well as someone whose mind is clever, resourceful, versatile, and cunning enough to turn any situation to their advantage

Or as W2 academics chasing book reviews and podcasts slots translate: "a complicated guy"

the perfect actor would be someone with james bond spy thriller feeling not commercial guy that has the energy of a little league coach

that what i mean. where do all those votes go? someone controls them. and those interests are bought and paid for

thats been replaced with spac deals

also: can't pump the ipo and get exit liquidity for vc through a dutch auction

this exact behaviour is why insurance is getting more expensive
lets see how corgi holds up in a few years
if trump ordered someone to be shot for accepting bribes we would find this idea a lot less appealing

anyone who spent a lot of time in that part of the world will tell you this stuff can basically be made up

the western method to do this is to plant csa material on a person and then publicly announce they've been caught with it. not many people consider that 'possession' can simply be a USB stick found in a tree on your 2 acre lot, or a usb stick that has been planted in your car

your entire family and social network will immediately cut you off and very few consider these things can be fabricated

how are prosecutors racist - they only get to prosecute people arrested for committing crimes. they dont get to pick!
Re:Why Jet Engines Aren't "Made in China" on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @09:18PM (#48755225)
its difficult to see from the lens of software and information technology, and open source academia, but physical science is often discovered via experimentation and cant just be brute forced. usually it disseminates as it is adopted into industrial process and is then copied. a lot of scientific discoveries are made due to impulsive-creative intuition

for example: - until the end of ww1 the haber bosch process was confined to germany

- jet engine turbine blades today

- most historically: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_fire , medieval napalm that nobody has been able to replicate even now

Re:The Internet I Grew Up with Doesn't Exist Anymore on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @11:16AM (#48748268)
until mid 00s broadband internet was not widely available outside US/Europe/Japan. At one point I think over 10% of the internet was just Russia. Even today Russia and Japan make up about 5% of the internet each. you can see this in early 4ch culture especially

this meant most of the people on the internet were middle class suburban from the developed world, educated, literate, and technical. importantly, 3rd world bot farms and relentless content grinding had not yet taken off. that is a big difference

because $100bn annual revenue, high FCF, high margin. Its a monster.
it takes advantage of an esoteric piece of insurance regulation. They’re doing very aggressive underwriting without any of the traditional insurance regulatory protections applying to them.
