In fairness they probably don't tend to use internet connected freezers in Africa.

How were the Nazis technocrats? The core of the Nazi party were weirdo political extremists and violently nationalistic army veterans. The only example I can think of which matches your idea of an 'extraordinarily capable technocratic leader' is Speer, and like his military counterpart Rommel, his reputation has been somewhat laundered and propagandised both during and after the war.
Just FYI: You sang his praises. If you "sang my praises", that means you celebrated yourself.

That's not the consensus and even if it were it's largely a pointless semantic argument.

If you want things to work every single time on a billion different devices this is how you do it.

The article literally says what's in the museum. What more do you want to know lol.
For every shop that exists in the real world to sell shit to women you have to remember there's an offshore sports betting portal on the world wide web to relieve men of their disposable income.
It's just porn I downloaded from Reddit. I don't know if you're aware but there's lots of it and it's free.
Can you suggest a good one?
Coincidentally I was trying this out yesterday as a potential option for automated porn filtering for the imageboard that I administrate. It is very lightweight which is good but the performance is not great. Some weird false positives and it does a bad job with flat chested women which is very concerning to me because it leads me to think it won’t be effective against CSAM.

You can mitigate this with decent bindings, but I agree it's not ideal.

that's the joke, isn't it?
Re:Rewriting in Rust on Thursday August 20, 2026 @04:14AM (#49371818)
I had the same impression, and Occam's Razor suggests that the reason is because the author wrote it with the heavy assistance of a language model. But I do wonder if might also be a certain proportion of the tech industry that has started internalising LLM speak and uses it even in writing that is authentically their own.
> They are just utter garbage

As someone once said, "Fail again. Fail better."

And, anyway, so what if they are bad? They are authentically the product of a single human soul rather than some grey-gruel average of millions. There is an awful lot of value in that.

I suppose I am sympathetic to the feeling of having weird tastes uncatered to by the market. But in that instance, why not actually try and write such stories yourself? And as a reader, what is the appeal of reading stories regurgitated by a stochastic algorithm when the possibility is there instead of connecting to another human soul?
Why would you want to write fiction with language models? Serious question.

What you would become, in effect, is the fictional Soviet 'writer' from Sam Kriss' 2011 short story 'The Machine'.

I do not think there is anything to aspire to in that.

For a confident road cyclist it is usually a better experience to be on an actual road than a cycle path even though you have to manage vehicular traffic.
What does that mean?
Re:AI is removing the middle class of software engineering on Thursday August 13, 2026 @05:20AM (#49283474)
The equivalent is probably weird, proprietary DSLs / standard libraries that AI has not been able to ingest so it performs poorly on. But maybe these days LLMs don't even really struggle with these sorts of domains.
It's amusing to me that AI has become sophisticated enough that people have started being racist to it.

Several times I have implemented topological sorts and parsers as part of routine work in very ordinary tech jobs. I think it is absolutely incorrect to say that these tasks are tantamount to implementing your own crypto. They are not things you do every day, but they are basic informatics and to be honest if a developer told me that they could never conceive of implementing them in their job I would be inclined to regard them as someone who was working without a full toolbox, so to speak.
I think a lot about this. It's funny how there are certain domains of language, familiar to all native speakers, but that you are simply not likely to learn as an adult language learner, at least not without diligent and focused study.

I live and work in a foreign country, and have a modest but functional grasp of the language here. Which is to say, I know how to say 'sustainability', 'union-negotiated collective agreement', and 'offensive conduct in the workplace'.... but if you asked me the words for 'cedar', 'robin', 'pond', or 'linen' I would be struck dumb. And yet presumably every ten year old I walk past in the street would know those words as comfortably as I knew them in English as a ten year old in England.

If you can't see the spin on corporate messaging it means it's working (and consequently, to stretch the metaphor, your wicket is in danger).
Re:The End of an Era on Friday July 31, 2026 @09:28AM (#49122890)
Part of the appeal of literature generally and the novel in particular is that it provides you with an incredibly intimate connection to the subjectivity of another person, though they may be long dead, or the speaker of another language, or from a far away part of the world that you would never be able to visit yourself.
Re:How many of the 170k English words do you know? on Friday June 19, 2026 @11:37AM (#48599819)
It also doesn't get hard enough. Also way too many of the words are just words about long words, or the tendency to be verbose.
Do the indexes have some capacity to defer / waive buying into new stocks if they judge it in the interests of investors?
This is a bit of a fairytale. Probably true for a certain subset of high earning westerners. Not true in general.

British class definitions are not at all the same as American ones. At least as traditionally defined, upper class pretty much meant you were in the titled aristocracy.
