Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Monday November 02, 2026 @10:49AM (#50338484)
1. Society has (implicitly) invested resources in order get these individuals to a place where they can push and prod at the boundaries of mathematics. This investment is lost.

2. The majority of mathematicians are passionate about what they do, which typically means higher productivity. Forcibly transferring them to a different field means we lose that productivity.

3. Aspiring & passionate mathematicians will see how the field is impacted and will end up doing something else instead. This is not just a loss for the field, but also a loss for humanity because that person could have ended up being the next Terrence Tao.

Taken together, it is hard to foresee what the 2nd and 3rd order effects will be, especially because of how pure mathematics is a “trickle down” field where advancements find practical usecases later on in the sciences and in engineering.

But systemd bad :[
Not that straightforward. Similar to CPUs and other HW, there are errata and interop quirks between devices.

There are also tight time budgets (basically SLAs) that must be met along with memory considerations (both in SW and on the NPU/HBM), not to mention how the device needs to respond to load and various failure scenarios.

I worked at Cisco on one of the IOS-XR teams. It’s way more complex than you think it is.

This whole thing sounds like a deluded vanity project birthed in an ivory tower.

> because right now I see about a thousand times more criticism leveled at Israel than at North Korea

Is the criticism of Israel from the people, or from Western govs and media outlets (i.e., the establishment, the centers of actual power)? And isn’t the outrage logical given the nature of the atrocities being committed by Israel right now? And pray tell: which Western countries are sanctioning Israel?

On the other hand, NK is vilified by the Western establishment, i.e. by the holders of power, but on a more background level. It isn’t the topic du jour right now, but NK is ever present as a big bad evil. Propaganda helps maintain this image in the West, even when NK isn’t present in the news cycle. And it is sanctioned to hell and back.

And even if it is “right”, it does not mean that it is completely right, nor does it mean that the propaganda isn’t doing its job effectively even if you don’t realize it.

Anyhow, I think this thread is deep enough, so I will stop here.

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:56PM (#50297958)
I see the outrage, but I don’t see it at the level of NK, at least not in Western media or governments.

I meant the faux concern over NK is evergreen unlike some other causes such as the ones I mentioned.

As soon as (if ever) NK joins the fold of Western-aligned liberal states, the media machine will spin up and it will cease to be maligned, and you will move on to the next bogeyman.

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:12PM (#50297578)
I would be less snarky if the faux concern didn’t just last as long as the media tells you to. Most recently, there was a period where Myanmar and the Uyghurs were in vogue, but not anymore. NK is more evergreen it seems.

Setting aside the genocide, it is particularly funny at a time when Western governments are oppressing their own by crushing dissent on Israel, but I don’t see the same outrage there.

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:14PM (#50296945)
Well, looking at the way NK is demonized, you would think it was on a genocidal rampage, invading neighboring countries, and eliminating heads of sovereign states in pursuit of its Greater NK project.

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:23PM (#50261558)
Only replying to you since everyone else is making the same points.

I follow a religion with similar edicts (not Christian). I also understand the contributions made by Christianity in this area. But the fact of the matter is that religion was ultimately unable to force actual widespread change on the ground, especially not in secularized European states.

At the end of the day, the only true religion that industrialists and capitalists understand is money. Only unions were able to speak their language at a very large scale, and this is the language they ultimately had to listen to :)

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:37AM (#50259110)
Did religious edict also eliminate child labor, give us more humane working hours, and establish labor laws? Or was that because of unions?
Okay, what about spoonfeeding the records? If they got access to part 1/N, why did that not entail full access to the data? Otherwise they wouldn’t even be able to chunk it in the first place, no?
Re:Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:08AM (#50228221)
Andor is in a league of its own imo. Once in a generation kind of show.

But it is similar to Fallout in that it was able to break out of its universe. Andor is enjoyable even if one hates Star Wars; Fallout is enjoyable even if you dislike gaming.

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Saturday October 24, 2026 @11:42PM (#50228087)
I have yet to see LLMs do well “autonomously” on anything that doesn’t fall into any of these 3 buckets:

1. well specified

2. well tested (which is a form of spec)

3. represented in the training set (i.e. not built on a corpus of human developed examples)

For example, a lot of the compiler porting efforts fall into all 3 buckets: compilers are well specified (there is a set of valid inputs and an expected behavior), they are typically well tested, and as a bonus, in a way that is implementation agnostic thanks to the clean interface (think: integration vs unit tests), and are very well represented in the training set.

As the FFmpeg devs like to say: if you don’t like how OSS volunteers do things, send patches or money, or just fork (off).

Re:NixOS is making me less afraid on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:55PM (#50173231)
+1. I personally have always wanted to write down my thoughts on NixOS in a long-ish form post.

But it’s just really hard to articulate. NixOS is such a step above any other distro that it becomes hard to convey exactly why this is the case. It is also because so many pieces work together in tandem - both above and below the covers so to speak - to make this the case.

There is really only one talk I have found that somewhat captures this, What Nix Can Do (and Can’t) by Matthew Croughan: https://youtu.be/6Le0IbPRzOE. Keep in mind that it’s a rapid fire-style talk with a ton of breadth, so it is natural to feel overwhelmed while watching if new to Nix :)

Also, here is a random dump of features that I have found both valuable and very difficult to achieve on other distros:

* Config rollback in bootloader to undo mistakes without needing to boot from recovery media

* Flake lockfiles to pin all config and packages

* Config layering: base config that applies to all machines, per-machine overrides, etc

* NixOS module system, very useful to conditionally enable functionality (e.g. subset of machines run Syncthing)

* Rebuild a host over SSH by copying over packages via nixos-rebuild

* Image builders i.e. Packer-lite (now in nixpkgs)

* Build a live CD/USB custom installer to quickly boot from with your own packages, user, dotfiles, etc

* NixOS integration testing framework (extremely powerful), makes package and config stability better under the hood in nixpkgs

* Build and run your config as a QEMU VM

* nixos-anywhere to convert a running Linux machine into NixOS, very useful for VPS/cloud machines

* Out of the box support for cross compilation and static linking via pkgsCross and pkgsStatic

* Stylix for centralized theming config across apps

* Natively build a Docker image from your package using dockerTools

Re:NixOS is making me less afraid on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:41PM (#50173088)
Gaming works extremely well. You can even get a SteamOS-like experience via Jovian, which is basically an overlay that provides a curated set of packages and configs.
Re:NixOS is making me less afraid on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:39PM (#50173070)
If you’re using flakes, as long as you don’t update the lock file, you will always install the exact same package. This holds across machines using the same config.
Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @10:59AM (#50119188)
I actually prefer the separation. Limited blast radius is one advantage, but I also think that the media server and downloader should be separate things anyways.

But I do think that there is an opportunity to merge Sonarr and Radarr.

Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @09:41AM (#50118297)
TRaSH is definitely for power users. It becomes much easier to work with when configured with Recyclarr, but there is still a learning curve.

One of the most valuable things for me is the ability to rank different aspects of releases across media types. For example, I prefer dual audio anime, unless the sub is much higher quality. Same idea for surround sound and release groups. I also want to ignore things like dual audio that is non-English, or hardcoded French subs, etc.

Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @07:49AM (#50117245)
Ah, I know about root paths, but didn’t know about path-specific rules. Thanks, will check this out. And yeah, it should work fine with Seerr.
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:54PM (#50113404)
It is important to point out that “a day or so” - or even the ability to spin up your own version - is only possible because these projects already exist.

Without a tested and validated reference implementation that already accounts for the numerous edge conditions and quirks of media releases, APIs, etc., your vibecoded version would have taken much longer to iterate on.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:45PM (#50113329)
Yep basically. The real magic is when you combine it with a Debrid service, which essentially puts a cache in front of torrents. If the torrent has been downloaded before, you get a direct hosted stream instead of having to stream your movie from active seeders (i.e. buffering hell).
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:39PM (#50112703)
I have considered it & heard good things about quadlets, but since I am more of a Compose person, I use compose2nix instead (self-plug).
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @09:08PM (#50112456)
Can you explain? Are you manually setting tags for every anime you add? How does it work with requests made thru Seerr?
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @08:13PM (#50112087)
Single instance works fine, but a separate instance allows you to set global quality settings that are more accurate for anime: https://trash-guides.info/Sonarr/Sonarr-Quality-Settings-Fil...
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:56PM (#50111542)
“Even better” is relative. Some people like having media stored locally instead of relying on torrent streaming availability.

Usenet streaming sounds cool, but with releases being DMCAd so frequently, I don’t see how it would be practical for anything but the most recent content.

Also, I imagine that Stremio without Debrid (or equivalent) is kind of a terrible experience most of the time.

Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:16PM (#50111172)
Yes. NixOS running Podman containers is where I ended up after trying almost everything :)
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:14PM (#50111148)
Indeed. The other thing to point out is that, once you have set them up, they will chug along fine for years with near zero input.

Here is the stack I recommend:

* Radarr (movies) with optional second instance for 4K versions

* Sonarr (shows) with optional second instance for 4K versions

* Sonarr (anime), separate instance to have control over quality settings

* Prowlarr (tracker/indexer management)

* SABnzbd (Usenet)

* qBittorrent (torrents)

I would also recommend consulting the TRaSH guide to tune your setup and ensure you’re grabbing quality releases. From there, the next logical step is Profilarr :)
