The Cursor blog says it was not developed by Anthropic
I don't think it has to be entitlement. It could be a sign that you were "up and coming" and now you're not. I can see how that'd still sting a bit even to have external validation of your own anxieties.
I think this is a bit disingenuous. The stance they’re taking seems consistent to me. I’m
Interpreting their view as “Using AI to create something new isn’t theft, using it to recreate or access an existing product is copyright infringement” - makes sense to me
Good enough for the old world, but I'm not so sure it's good enough for what's coming.
Your reality sounds miserable to me. “The only ways to be creative are the ones I deem acceptable, otherwise it’s tainted”. That’s snobbery at it’s greatest
No, the entire world abandoned it when you realized it wasn't the perfect language. The rest of us are just role playing today basically. It's a bit of a lark, kind of like civil war reenactment.
Personally, I’d be glad to be woken up for something like this. I wouldn’t want it to be a demand, but a demand wouldn’t be needed anyway
Several people who work on PHP have said it's not enough, that only the patch will do, but, they're staying silent otherwise
I’m not worried about becoming like them, and I have never once seen complaining about them or calling them out work positively for the person doing it. But, I’ve found acting confused and asking them for more detailed information has helped.
Hear hear! It took me a bit but I've reached the point where I'm enjoying just "growing". I think we grew up in a world that molded us to compete, and to judge ourselves based on others, but I think with AI we're going to reach a point where our hobbies are going to be just seeing what we can accomplish for ourselves.
10 minutes of AI doesn’t ruin someone from programming or solving fractions either, it just lowers the ability short term. Likely not by making someone dumber but instead impacting motivation. Give someone a calculator and then take it away and you would get a similar result
They’re looking for reassurance to avoid fear. The same way we all do when we see that someone has been in a freak auto accident, we try and find some way to tell ourselves “oh, that wouldn’t happen to me”
I spent three months in another country where I didn’t apeak the language very well. Hard not to see life’s brutal realities from that position
He did alright, he might have been right 20 years ago too
I was incredibly more naive and idealistic 2 years ago. Seeing the world more accurately than I did before has been quite the shock
I just will never understand how you all can have your head so deep in the sand.
LLM's are already transformative. I get thinking it isn't going to solve all the world problems, but, companies throughout the entire world are already using it at enormous numbers. Transformative means it changes the world, it already has. It does not mean it changes your life.
Indeed, I’ve heard so many people misunderstand it because of this type of wording. Like there is still some plan and series of steps we’re following - which really misses the whole point and why it’s worth knowing in the first place
What did people do 500 years ago?
That’s like, just your opinion man.
I disagree, but I think neither of us are going to benefit from continuing this discussion.
I think there are a lot of situations unaccounted for here
- people writing in a non native language
- people insecure in their writing
- people not used to writing in industry terms
- people with the curse of knowledge that are aware that they can’t write for a general audience well
Surely others too. None of those mean you have to read it, but I have gotten immense value from reading some things people have had ai write (and I’ve seen a ton of junk as well)
Nah, I used $1500 in api prices last week, after caching (8900 ignoring caching) for what amounts to $50 a week. They’re nowhere near api prices yet
The US is meeting with China to discuss the threat of AI… May be fine but, i’m wary
And yet the world still turned
Hahaha, that’s a good joke
Classic example of victim blaming. Not the company generating the ad, not the company approving it, but the person who is trying to block it, and then ACTUALLY did stop using Adsense.
One of my early programming jobs was bringing a print newspaper to the web. I was actually going through some of my emails from that time yesterday, which brought back a lot of memories. I was largely despised by most of the staff. Some told me the internet was a fad, others assumed I thought I was better than them. The editor kept insecurely saying “I know you think I’m a dinosaur and don’t want to hear what I have to say but…” the thing is… I didn’t think they were dinosaurs at all. I had enormous respect for them (it’s why I applied!), I knew the internet was inevitable and wanted to salvage as much as I could of what I loved.
The internet did change their industry and the world. Many of them did lose their jobs. That is what technology does. Efficiencies mean someone somewhere is no longer needed. That was hard for me to accept for a long time, but if you have programmed professionally long enough you have almost definitely indirectly contributed to some job loss. (And new jobs as well! But… to the people who do lose their jobs, there is little comfort in that)
I think what is worth keeping in mind though is 1) wishing something away wont make it so, so it is best to do your best to avoid putting your head in the sand, and 2) while many many people will be completely uprooted (sometimes in miserable ways) that is not at all a statement about them. The journalists of before were and are still incredible people, the brick layers too. Us doing work that wasn’t automatable before did not make us better than them, or even more creative than them.
No, but it makes sense to me that we’d need to go through this step to get where we want to go
And storing memories for every “footgun” it finds, while removing more important memories (or shortening them until they’re inaccurate or useless)
While I agree 1000 is hilariously low for this, worth is hard to quantify. Do you pay what it could theoretically cost your company? the amount the top bidding bad actor would be willing to pay?
