What's wrong with men that they can't behave civilly to each other and to women? Especially prominent and intelligent men in leadership positions?

Seriously, this is the easy stuff.

Re:Google: Structured Markup May Become a Ranking Factor on Saturday September 12, 2015 @10:39PM (#10210167)
Structured data (with Schema.org and OpenGraph) is being used by AppleBot and Spotlight. Since mobile search on iOS is 75% Spotlight (and 25% everything else - including Google) you're well advised to implement it.
Re: on Saturday September 12, 2015 @10:35PM (#10210155)
My point is no one can know what your issue is. It takes tests, experience and knowledge of medical professionals to find out what your issue is. If you are open about your symptoms, your feelings and your concerns a good doctor will order tests. They might show something or they might show nothing. The doctor might consider it to be psychological instead of physical so you might be referred to a therapist.

Diagnosing humans is pretty damn hard and will take time. Stick with finding a solution.

Re: on Saturday September 12, 2015 @10:05PM (#10210090)
You need to speak with your doctor first. You may be out of shape, you may have a vitamin deficiency, you may have something complicated. The answer is in a doctor's office, not HN.
Don't trust their motives. It's more likely they want you because they can take advantage of you (due to inexperience) than anything else.
Don't trust "the founders" or their venture capitalist overlords. Put yourself and your education first.

Use your time in university to explore more than compsci; get a double major in business or design, study anthropology or archeology, learn about the last 3000 years of technology, use the university to make yourself smart and more able than you are now.

Trust yourself, you are your best investment if you take the opportunity to grow.

Yeah. Where's the "travel the world and live in a tent" option. My soul mate is definitely out there in a tent with mad cash in the bank watching a sunset from a mountain top.

Sigh

We'll never find each other unless s/he wanders into an internet cafe tomorrow before this rolls off of front page of HN...

Hurry soul mate! HURRY down the mountain!

These questions are so heavily stilted towards white male start up culture it's laughable.

Oddly enough - no mention of this book. Great read - highly recommended.

For a while during a coding sabbatical I was a FOH sound guy. During another break I was a health food store manager. On vacation I'm usually deep in the woods. I probably do more of the latter if computers just didn't exist.

Re:What’s really going on in a salary negotiation on Sunday March 01, 2015 @10:22AM (#9127320)
Be prepared to walk away. If you want $Y find a job that pays $Y. If they don't offer you $Y, go find the next offer.

As long as you know what $Y is, it's that plain and simple.

The hiring manager or recruiter can't help you find $Y. You've got to be prepared ahead of time by using sites like salary.com and glassdoor.com where you can find the national and local averages for your skills and experience. These estimates help you sort out your market value. You also need to know what your personal budget is, what standard of living you seek, and what you truly value.

Do you only value money? Do you value time off? A great manager? Awesome co-workers? The stability of an enterprise? The excitement of a start-up? Does the CEO impress you? What is the estimate cash value of the benefits? Know what you value before you you start looking.

When you evaluate an offer it's real important to compare it. In other words, don't jump at the first offer! Having an offer letter or two in hand is powerful for you and the hiring manager too. And it makes walking away obviously easier.

Above all be truthful with yourself and with your potential employer - and expect the same from them. Do you honestly think that you're going to enjoy working for a company that is deceiving you from day one?

We are fortunate to work in a time where our skills are in incredibly high demand. You, as a job hunter, have more opportunity, advantage, and resources than the vast majority of the work force. You can use this privilege to achieve a happy life and successful career.

Serious question: what were you expecting to see from the best book about business?

I think every programmer should write machine code at least once. It's fascinating to understand how the CPU actually gets the job done.

Re:Ask HN: Where can I find technical co-founders? on Sunday September 28, 2014 @06:51PM (#8381114)
Co-founder usually means "compensated with more equity than cash". And there's also the implicit massive time commitment.

Part of the point is that an advisor is typically someone so experienced you can't afford all of their time. But they can turn enough of the problem into routine bits and pieces that it becomes easier for a person with less experience to implement correctly.

I believe all too many startups suffer from inexperienced developers throwing up the first thing that comes to mind. A little guidance goes a long way to taming youthful exuberance.

Re:Ask HN: Where can I find technical co-founders? on Sunday September 28, 2014 @10:40AM (#8379840)
Flat out hire a technical advisor. Don't bother dangling equity, just pay their rate like you would an attorney - retainer + hourly. Ask them to create a technical roadmap and architecture. With that in hand you can then find a first employee to implement it.

In this way, you can leverage the expensive expertise of a very senior level person where it's most needed and then hire a less experienced and less expensive individual to perform the daily work.

It's like building a house, hire an architect first, but then a general contractor to make it happen.

Re:Professionalism for Software Engineers (2000) on Saturday July 26, 2014 @03:02PM (#8090445)
Software failure is costly and impactful. Why not aspire to levels of completeness and rigor comparable to civil engineering?

As a software craftsman and a professional, I recognize the necessity to impose a practice on younger, less experienced programmers to guide them towards high quality work. Civil engineering is a good example for all coders to learn from.

Liability is the antithesis of American business. (The act of incorporating is in part a shield against accountability and liability.)
RCA takes this back to Reagan's War on Education. It's ongoing and it's destroyed the most important institution in the nation.
