If the dependencies wanted to get paid they should not have given their work away for free.

If you give your work away for free you cannot expect to get paid for it.

For people who deal with intractible logic all day it's amusing how much these simple facts fail to get through their thick skulls.

You don't see the homeless people who keep themselves and their belongings out of your sight.

Now that is what a dry academic paper about cats is supposed to look like. Cat pictures on every page.
We have conkers in London.

FFI is the shell's only job.
> If you absolutely must parse ls

... stop and rethink your options. You may be able to get away with parsing the first columns of ls -l but even then a pathologically named file could make itself look like a line of ls output.

It's simply not possible in all cases. If you can constrain your input then you may be able to make use of it but in the general case, that's why xargs and find grew a -0 option.

Or glob.

Wayland is going to make 2024 the year of Linux on the Desktop!

Any day now...

Back in the days when you could go into the cockpit for a chat, the pilots turned the engines of our 747 off (well, idle) over the middle of the Atlantic to show my brother and I how the autopilot worked.

Fixed Action Pattern (?) which didn't quite go away.

I can't lie, I like the look of that one that hangs them out the side window.

Can we get them for planes?

IE didn't die until YouTube publicly dropped support for it.
No it's very simple.

If Russia didn't invade, Russia wouldn't be killing people and blowing up their stuff.

Russia's actions are Russia's responsibility, not America's.

And that is why it keeps happening.

Ignore the crazy person. Don't listen. Don't try to understand. Don't learn how to stop the outbursts of crazy before they happen.

It works so well. Why change?

Don't listen to me.

It's something you have which also represents something you are. A password is something you know.
And this is a surprise because ... ?

Because the BBC can kiss my arse if it thinks anything it produces isn't mine.

Apple are well known for being ridiculously paranoid about products being leaked before their announcement, so much so that at one point they put eye-height frosting (not the cake type) on the glass walls to stop people accidentally looking in to the factory floor.

My bag was checked once in the 5 weeks I worked there - on the way in. The passwords I created for their new servers (containing metrics from the factory's build and test processes) was at one point walking around Cork in their admin's wallet. I used my own laptop (because OSX bleugh) plugged straight into their corporate lan.

But they did have a room which was out of bounds.

Nobody gets security right, however "high security" they think they are.

Oh and let's not get started on what the MoD thinks it's achieving in its immigration office.

Basically if you're a shit sysadmin, you don't have to bother learning anything or working hard.

This is absolutely fine if you intend to remain a shit sysadmin. Go nuts with Docker. The 21st century will be waiting for you when you're done.

So will 19 fucking 60 because nothing's fucking changed.

I think you underestimate the ability of the Slavs to Get Shit Done.

Do you know why they beat you into space? It certainly wasn't because they had a head start.

I love the idea of knowing exactly which failure scenarios are incoming.

Your universe sounds fun. Can I join?

As a long-time passenger I'm OK with that, and I'd be even more OK with that if they remembered what customer fucking service was and brought back the conductors.

It's[+] my city and it can damn-well run the way I want it to. And that doesn't include 100% surveillance.

[+] Was, sadly. I like London. But it's shit.

Edit: Formatting.

Further edit: In fact I've lived in London most of my life and experience suggests a scenario which is distressingly common: Are you one of those cunts who tuts and sighs[ø] when a little old lady gets on the bus and takes (horror of horrors!) more than 10 seconds to pay her fare and find a seat? FUCK YOU. You don't deserve the air you breathe.

[ø] For those who live outside the M25, this is the London equivalent of a near-violent argument between strangers.

Re:The Cashless Society Is a Creepy Fantasy on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:58PM (#12747600)
It's impossible. I just had a fight with a bus driver over this.

"Single to X please"

"No"

"I'll pay you, whether personally or your employer, an entire £10 (the fare's about £1.50) to take me to X"

"No"

"£20?"

"No. Go somewhere else (there was nowhere near this particular bus stop to buy one and I'd have missed that bus even if there was) and buy a card so we can follow you everywhere you go"

It's fucking scary. Or would be if I lived permanently in this shithole. Haha!

Recent events rather than persuading me to get bank account and card have entrenched my position not to get one. Things should not be like this and fuck any and everyone who's OK with it.

Re:What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake? on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:50PM (#12747550)
Absolutely there's an ISIS of plumbling and a dark art of wiring but it comes from the opposite side to that which we expect.

I've mostly plumbed, entirely wired and partially built my own house. I can see better ways to do what I did, of course, and much much worse ways to do what I did. The boiler installer I hired was, thankfully, top notch (I am ridiculously careful with gas).

Oh and I also installed the fibre, installed an ethernet and wifi router, protected it all with a firewall and integrated a server and VPN.

And I grow about ⅔ of my food.

I do all of this without being qualified to do any more than make a coffee and people who are actually 'qualified' (or, more realistically, licensed) have mostly congratulated me on my work.

Should I have done none of these thing because Whitehall thinks erroneously that I'm too stupid? Fuck those cunts. My daughter is safe, has good friends, is well fed and well educated despite their bureaucracy, not because of it.

If anyone thinks I should not have done the plumbing or the electrification, despite being unlicensed, explain why growing my own food and configuring my own internet are OK. Or try and convince my that I should sacrifice my router to my government. And if you attempt (and you will fail utterly) to do that, prepare to be told to fuck right off.

Re:Astronauts enter China's space station [video] on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:32AM (#12742085)
That's the point: we may not know until we have days or hours remaining to achieve them.
Re:Astronauts enter China's space station [video] on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:25AM (#12742053)
> But we were not _really_ behind.

We should keep telling ourselves that. It may also help us convince ourselves that our arsehole is indeed the best place for our head to be.

Re:Astronauts enter China's space station [video] on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:23AM (#12742047)

Re:Astronauts enter China's space station [video] on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:22AM (#12742044)
Minutes, seconds, can make all the difference in some cases.

Months? We're fucked.

Re:What If the Newspaper Industry Made a Colossal Mistake? on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:14AM (#12742006)
Because once your government is the arbiter of "plumbing", anyone who can squeeze a pipe together but doesn't need to qualify to work with gas will be marginalised (and unemployed)?

Because once your government is the arbiter of "electrician", anyone who thinks the rules are ridiculous (they are frequently way over the top) will be marginalised (and unemployed)?

Because once your government is the arbiter of "programmer", anyone who can hack a few lines together but is only 12 and not permitted to license will be marginalised (and uneducated)?

It is getting much worse. Not only is little freedom left but it's been taken away under the guise of the exact opposite, and the façade is widely, and often violently, believed.

Re:The Cashless Society Is a Creepy Fantasy on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @04:02AM (#12741947)
That certainly doesn't help, but really it's just bureaucracy and you batton down the hatches and get it done.

Needing one, and it is really very close to need, is the concern. Interactions between me and my fellow citizens, or between me and my government (but I repeat myself), should not require a chaperone.

Re:The Cashless Society Is a Creepy Fantasy on Wednesday October 19, 2016 @03:54AM (#12741909)
Bitcoin has exactly the same problems as any other cashless interaction.

It's where my money is, but it's not the next cash.
