> It just goes on like this. No argument, just mockery. Doesn't address any of the statements, just jeers at them

Yes, because the point of the article is that these are things rational every-day people recognize as being worthy of mockery.

If the author needs to explain to you why not knowing your own address is foolish, how handing your child an AI instead of spending time with them is bad, then you aren't going to get the rest of the thesis. As the author puts it, you've passed the test, you're part of the cult of personality.

Re:Senior Engineers Are the Next DRAM Shortage on Friday September 18, 2026 @07:04PM (#49761436)
And maybe the reason there will be a senior shortage is because we all got pissed off and left.
> Except, of course, no one has actually been robbed, the culture has not been stolen

Considering its become exceptionally difficult to search for things that used to be easy to find, I have to disagree with you there.

The web has been polluted with trash, covering up all the original media with messy imitations.

Re:The FAA's plan to fix air traffic? $875M worth of AI on Thursday September 17, 2026 @11:00PM (#49749746)
Sadly the problem predated him, the FAA has been under funded for a long time. Last Week Tonight did a really good segment about it a year ago. However, Trump absolutely made it a lot worse.

Additional Context: for about two years functional programming was REALLY popular in the Node community. It was a fad to chain tons of tiny functions together, and thus lots of people wrote tons of tiny functions. This is why lodash/fp exists.

I feel like the second to last paragraph says a LOT, quite succinctly, but maybe I'm better at reading between the lines.

It sounds like they're all trying to make a case for why the government should buy them out as a new kind of manhattan project.

They know the market isn't going to buy in for their big payout.

Possibly, but more likely because of the ravaging weather events as gas powered data centers churn out more emissions in four years than the last fourty
I've heard of similar things coming from Marc Andreessen, even before the AI boom. There's some scary people in power

Edit: found the article I remembered https://prospect.org/2024/04/24/2024-04-24-my-dinner-with-an...

> I brought up the ordinary comforts of kinship, friendship, craft, memory, legend, lore, skills passed down across generations, and other benefits that small towns provide: things that make human beings human beings. I pointed out that there must be something in the kind of places he grew up in worth preserving. I dared venture that it is always worth mourning when a venerable human community passes from the Earth; that maybe people are more than just figures finding their proper price on the balance sheet of life …

Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @11:16AM (#49645215)
Before I even opened the article I knew the reason was because LLMs don't need abstractions. React Native was always about making app construction easier for people who don't want to learn ObjC or Swift. If you're not writing or even reviewing the code yourself, this is unneeded overhead.

For a while I've been wondering why people are even bothering with high level languages if you aren't even gonna read the code.

We absolutely have a solution: Don't do the thing. It's the solution to pretty much every problem our planet is facing.

The problem is that very rich/powerful people want to be very much richer/more powerful by doing the thing.

> I don't believe you on the sex worker part

I'm guessing you're not a fetlife user, then? They have had repeated issues with keeping a payment gateway, since mastercard keeps yanking service due to sex workers advertising on the site.

Did you ever use craigslists personal ads? The ones they were forced to remove after FOSTA passed?

https://www.vice.com/en/article/craigslist-personal-ads-sest...

FOSTA/SESTA make it extremely dangerous to operate a personals site in the US. The bills made content providers directly liable.

Re:Ask HN: Why don't we bring back old school OkCupid? on Monday September 07, 2026 @02:51AM (#49594794)
The people who can innovate in this space either don't have the mental and/or capital bandwidth to do so, or don't want to deal with the absolutely massive amount of moderation that it would require.

I met my wife on OkC in 2006, years before the Match acquisition. I have long been furious about what Match did to the site after they bought it in 2011, and have long fantasized about creating something that could return to what it offered. Problem is, I don't think you could do it.

OkCupid in its heyday was a product of the golden age of the web, when social networking was new. It thrived because it predated doom scrolling, so taking quizzes and answering surveys was still a fun way to use the web. Now we're in a post-twitter landscape, where dopamine comes from a flick of a finger.

OkC's forums were one of the first mainstream online spaces for conversations about sexuality and non-monogamy. That role has now been subsumed by subreddits and facebook groups.

When OkC was independent, the majority of moderation involved keeping things pg-13 and enforcing the terms of use. You could crowd-source it all right within the site itself. Today you have AI agent swarms bombarding any site with a userbase, just hoping to get eyeballs. You have age verification laws, payment gateways that will stop processing if they get even a whiff that sex workers might be using your site to advertise, and bigots who will DDOS you if you dare to cater to the needs of minorities.

And all that to wade into a battle with a billion dollar juggernaut.

Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Monday September 07, 2026 @01:35AM (#49594273)
We bought a new tv two years ago and I spent probably a week researching to find the least-smart set I could.

The best option is display only units made for businesses, like what they use for restaurant menus, but those are usually twice the price of normal tvs because they're not app subsidized like smart tvs are.

What I ended up going with was Hisense. They ship with Google TV, but it's disabled by default. On first power up, it asks if you want to activate the Google TV features, and you can just say no. The thing then runs like a basic display.

Re:The moral panic over data centres is foolish on Saturday September 05, 2026 @07:50PM (#49581934)
> But the government could easily fix these problems with regulations that apply broadly, not just to datacenters.

Even if you can get legislators to pass regulation, enforcing it is a constant battle, and odds are they'll just pay a fine and keep on violating the regulations.

It's a much easier fight to keep a DC out of your community to begin with.

I was very surprised the "we need more white babies" people were pushing a policy that lowers sperm count.
Re:The Wormhole Hall of Shame on Friday September 04, 2026 @05:34PM (#49570499)
We never see the wormhole in Stargate, at least under SG1 canon. It's microscopic and simply used for transporting a matter stream. The ring field is a matter destabalizer and recombinator, pretty much the same thing as Star Trek transporters. Thats why radio waves can move two-way but matter is one-way.

Now if you're using Movie canon, yeah, it's broke.

Also, Marvel? Those aren't wormholes, they're magic portals.
