Price is not the only factor, paying double for energy that does not contribute to global warming and other health issues seems more reasonable.

The resolution part doesn't really hold for me, celsius can have decimals to have as much precision as you need but for weather purpose, half degree precision is usually more than enough.
I'm curious to know what is the small concentrated cluster of flights Northwest of Dulles airport, where the flight durations seem way too high compared to the effective distance between the points.

Same exact thing, now we know that we have to say the full announcement the second time we trigger Alexa.
Re:Why are shopping carts always broken? on Monday February 19, 2024 @09:06AM (#39429855)
I mean Aldi stores across the US have this system and they seem to be expanding not folding, I'm not sure you can pin this store issues to that specific point.

Plus once it's a generalized system and all carts require coins, it's not like you have the choice anymore.

Re:Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens) on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @11:35AM (#39290647)
How do we know it's not an hallucination?
Re:Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens) on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @11:32AM (#39290595)
I'm doubtful that this would be the real seed system prompt, it seems like a very naive implementation. You're asking chatgpt to generate text, so it does? Since it's very likely to hallucinate things, why trust that it is not hallucinating this seed system prompt?

In case anyone is curious about research related to this area, you can read the short history from Karelia study to biodiversity and public health interventions (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10043497/#:~:te....) research paper that looks at the health condition disparities between the Russian and Finnish border kids.
The problem is always around abuse. If it becomes known that you can get a big bonus by wasting a lot of money on useless infra first and then reducing it, other people will start playing the game.

How do you reward cloud cost awareness without creating perverse incentives?

Take them in the moment, don't make everyone pose every 5 min.
Nowhere does the author advocates for using its tool instead of git. Not everything is about self-promotion, sometimes it's simply knowledge sharing.

Northwestern Mutual | Junior Devops Engineer | Milwaukee ONSITE | Full-Time

At Northwestern Mutual, we are strong, innovative and growing. We invest in our people. We care and make a positive difference. Northwestern Mutual (NM) has been helping families and businesses achieve financial security for over 161 years. Through a distinctive, whole-picture planning approach including both insurance and investments, we empower people to be financially confident. We combine the expertise of our financial professionals with a personalized digital experience and leading-edge technology to best serve our clients.

We work in a fast-paced agile environment. We embrace out-of-box thinking, bold ideas, experimentation and the eagerness to continuously learn. We are not shy about trying new technologies and challenge our own ideas. We live by concepts of fail-fast, continuously deploy and automate everything.

To support a growing team, I am looking for an Entry Level DevOps Engineer to work with our Solutions Engineering team. You’re the right fit if you love to solve problems and are always striving to learn new things. We’re looking for self-motivated and self-driven engineers who are passionate about what they do and love technology.

As part of the Solutions Engineering team, you will work with other engineers to advance the DevOps and CI/CD practices of all software engineers at Northwestern Mutual. You work will directly lead to measurable productivity improvements for software engineers across Northwestern Mutual, either by designing, building and maintaining internal services or improving team-specific release workflows.

The position isn’t officially opened yet, but you can shoot me an email at the address listed in my profile with a reference to hacker news to be included when it does over the next week.

There are around 50 other tech positions currently opened, some of which may be open to remote roles, let me know if you would like a referral for them: https://careers.northwesternmutual.com/corporate-careers/?se...

Maybe it's a good thing that they can't be controlled?
Nice move to protect public repos.

For all other private repos and internal git servers, you can assume that credentials are routinely exposed if there is no pre-receive hook checking for secrets. We experimented with all the existing tools but none of them worked well enough so we built our own. Looking back we would have saved ourselves a lot of time and effort if we went with commercial offering like GitGuardian instead.

What are those plausible ways that AGI will end humanity? What extra powers will those systems have compared to what software engineers and companies can do that make them so dangerous?
Re:DevOps uses a capability model, not a maturity model on Thursday April 06, 2023 @09:26AM (#35468019)
I would encourage you to read the book "Accelerate" which was at the source of the DORA metrics, as it clearly advocate for a capability model, not a maturity one.
you can also fit a Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM fan in there, which provides a good balance of ventilation to noise ratio.

Re:AWS and Blockchain on Monday November 21, 2022 @09:58AM (#33693214)
I'm not sure I see why or how would blockchain solve this information centralization problem better than other "classic" tools?

Doesn't apply to most companies
Re:Never trust a system that seems to be working on Monday October 17, 2022 @02:00PM (#33237403)
That's very subjective. It also adds a ton of new gameplay components that push factorio players to better think about how to manage their logistics which is fun for some players (not all for sure)

Re:Show HN: Convert English to Cron Expressions on Friday August 05, 2022 @01:36PM (#32359291)
This is incredible. While there is still a decent rate of false-positives or errors, it's such a nicer user interface than the powerful yet hard-to-read cron syntax.

Any chance it could be made into a library/api?

Does anyone still pick up? After a few calls and cancelled rides, you quickly learn not to answer anymore if you want the car to arrive.
Re:Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources on Monday April 25, 2022 @01:06PM (#31157745)
Why would you want to have a bot post for you? Once we have general AI available, there will be much better applications than posting for you on social networks.
